Chapter 7 - The Lakefront Encounter

The tunnel beneath the Moretti estate was narrow, dark, and smelled of cold concrete and old damp wood.

Claire emerged through the heavy iron door into the boat house just as a loud, roaring engine tore through the sound of the wind outside.

The boat house sat directly on the shore of Lake Michigan. Its double wooden doors were wide open, letting in a blinding wall of snow and freezing air that made Claire shield her eyes with her arm.

Out on the snow-covered gravel driveway leading up toward the lake road, a heavy industrial snowcat—a tracked vehicle built for navigating deep snow drifts—was churning its way through three feet of fresh powder, its high-beam headlights cutting white corridors through the storm.

Adrian stood on the open timber dock outside the boat house, his black wool coat flapping wildly in the winter gale, his sidearm held down at his side.

He didn't fire. He didn't yell.

He simply stood in the middle of the narrow lane leading to the main road, blocking the vehicle’s only path out of the estate.

The snowcat ground to a sudden halt twenty feet in front of him, its massive rubber tracks tossing up clouds of white powder into the night air.

Through the reinforced glass of the cab, Vanessa Moretti could be seen sitting behind the wheel. Her dark hair was disheveled, her ivory silk dress torn at the hem, her face pale with a desperate, unhinged terror.

She shoved the cab door open, stepping out onto the running board, holding a heavy leather briefcase tightly against her chest.

"Get out of the way, Adrian!" Vanessa screamed over the roar of the engine and the howling wind. "Get out of my way or I swear to God I’ll drive right over you!"

Adrian didn't move an inch. The snow swirled around his broad shoulders, making him look like a statue carved from dark stone.

"Where are you going, Vanessa?" Adrian asked, his voice effortlessly carrying over the storm.

"I’m leaving!" Vanessa shouted, her voice breaking into hysterical laughter. "You think you can keep me locked in a room like a prisoner?! I built half the logistics contracts in this city! I earned that port land!"

"You didn't earn anything," Adrian said calmly, taking one slow step forward into the snow. "You poisoned a dying woman because you were afraid an eight-year-old boy would inherit what was never yours."

"She was weak!" Vanessa screamed, her eyes wild as she clutched the leather briefcase to her ribs. "Sophia was weak! She didn't belong in this family! She wanted to turn Ethan into a quiet, soft little boy who reads books in a non-profit center! She was going to ruin everything our father built!"

"She was my wife," Adrian said.

He lifted his weapon. Not at her head. Not at her chest.

He aimed directly at the snowcat’s front left track mechanism and fired three shots in rapid succession—THUD! THUD! THUD!

The heavy steel linkages shattered under the heavy caliber impact, the rubber track whipping loose with a loud, metallic snap that brought the twenty-ton machine crashing down onto its side in the snow.

Vanessa shrieked as the vehicle tilted violently, slipping off the running board and tumbling into a deep snowdrift at the side of the lane.

The leather briefcase flew from her hands, popping open as it hit the ice.

Hundreds of printed bank records, forged power-of-attorney documents, and offshore transaction receipts exploded into the winter air, caught by the howling gale, scattering white paper across the dark, frozen surface of Lake Michigan like a flock of terrified birds.

Vanessa lay in the snow, her ivory dress soaked through with freezing water, her hands clawing desperately at the papers blowing past her face.

"My papers..." she sobbed, her voice reduced to a thin, pathetic whimpering. "My accounts..."

Adrian walked up to her, stopping right beside the snowdrift. He looked down at his sister with an absolute lack of feeling—no anger, no hatred, only a cold, complete detachment.

Marcus and two guards ran out from the boat house, stepping into the snow behind Adrian.

"Take her to the holding room in the basement," Adrian ordered flatly, turning his back on her. "Call Federal Prosecutor Miller. Tell him I have a delivery for him at sunrise."

"Adrian! Please!" Vanessa wept from the snow, reaching out a cold, trembling hand toward his retreating figure. "I’m your sister! I’m a Moretti!"

May you like

Adrian stopped. He didn't turn around, but his voice cut through the freezing wind with finality.

"Sophia was a Moretti," Adrian said quietly. "Ethan is a Moretti. You are nothing."
