Chapter 5 - The Gambit of Blood

The storm that had been brewing over the Atlantic for weeks finally arrived, unleashing its full fury over Manhattan. Torrents of freezing rain lashed against the glass walls of the eighty-eighth floor of the Ashford Tower, while thunder boomed through the sky like artillery fire.
Inside the grand council chamber, the atmosphere was even more lethal.
A massive rectangular table of polished obsidian occupied the center of the room. Seated around it were the twelve elders of the council, their faces weathered by decades of crime and survival. At the head of the table sat Kendrick Ashford, his face an unreadable mask of absolute authority. To his right stood Barrett, his posture confident, a smug, self-satisfied smile playing on his lips.
And standing directly behind Kendrick’s chair, dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit that mirrored his own, was Willa. Her hair was pulled back into a flawless, professional bun, her slate-grey eyes looking out at the room with a cold, terrifying calm. She was no longer a waitress. She was no longer a nanny. She was the weapon Kendrick had been waiting for.
“This meeting was called to finalize the alliance with the Chicago outfit,” Barrett began, his voice booming over the sound of the rain outside. He threw a thick leather folder onto the obsidian table. “The terms are set. Kendrick will marry Sophia Moretti before the end of the month, securing our western borders and doubling our distribution revenue. The council has already signed off on the agreement.”
The elders nodded in unison, their old, greedy eyes looking at Kendrick, waiting for his submission.
Kendrick didn't look at the folder. He leaned back in his chair, tapping a slow, irregular rhythm against the armrest with his long fingers.
“The alliance is cancelled,” Kendrick said flatly, his voice echoing off the concrete walls.
The room erupted into a chaotic storm of shouts and protests. Barrett slammed his fist into the table, his face instantly turning a violent shade of purple. “Kendrick! You have crossed the line! You cannot defy the council! You cannot throw away our future for your personal arrogance! If you refuse this marriage, the council has the constitutional right to declare you unfit to rule and remove you from the throne!”
“The council only has that right if the don acts against the financial security of the syndicate,” a quiet, razor-sharp voice interrupted.
The room fell dead silent. Everyone turned their heads in absolute shock. It was Willa who had spoken.
Barrett’s eyes widened with fury, his finger trembling as he pointed it at her. “How dare you speak in this chamber! You are a common servant! A street rat! Guards, remove this woman from the building immediately!”
None of the guards moved. They stood like statues against the walls, their eyes fixed on Kendrick.
Willa stepped forward, standing directly beside Kendrick’s chair. She opened a sleek digital tablet, tapping the screen once. Instantly, the massive projection screen on the wall behind Kendrick illuminated, displaying a complex, sprawling web of bank accounts, shell companies, and international wire transfers.
“Over the past three weeks, under the authorization of the Don, I have conducted a full forensic financial audit of the syndicate's accounts spanning the last seven years,” Willa said, her voice clear, authoritative, and utterly unyielding. “As the daughter of your former CFO, Thomas Vance, I possess the original encryption keys my father built into the syndicate's core accounting software before his... untimely death.”
Barrett’s face instantly lost all of its color, turning a sickly, translucent shade of grey.
“What you are seeing on the screen,” Willa continued, her eyes locking onto the terrified old man, “is an irrefutable digital paper trail showing that over the last seven years, Barrett has embezzled over four hundred million dollars from the syndicate’s distribution revenue. He routed the funds through shell companies in Panama before depositing them into a private offshore bank account in the Cayman Islands.”
The elders of the council leaned forward, their expressions shifting from confusion to a deep, murderous rage as they read the numbers on the screen. Crime bosses could tolerate many things—murder, betrayal, war—but they would never tolerate someone stealing their money.
“But that’s not all,” Willa said, her voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. She tapped the screen again. A series of encrypted email logs and audio recordings appeared. “Barrett didn't use this money for a retirement fund. He used it to pay off the mercenaries who assassinated Kendrick’s wife, Clara, three years ago. He engineered the ambush to weaken Kendrick’s political position, and he was planning to use the upcoming Chicago alliance to fund a coup d'état that would remove the Ashford family from power permanently.”
A collective gasp echoed through the chamber.
Barrett stumbled backward, his hand frantically reaching into his overcoat for his concealed firearm. “It’s a lie! A fabrication! She is a ghost! A fraud! Don't listen to her!”
Before his hand could even touch the grip of his weapon, Kendrick rose from his chair with the speed of a striking viper. He reached across the table, his powerful hand grabbing Barrett by the throat, lifting the old man completely off his feet and slamming him violently onto the obsidian table.
The glass water pitchers shattered, sending water cascading over the papers. Barrett choked, his legs kicking wildly, his hands clawing at Kendrick’s iron grip.
Kendrick leaned down, his face inches from Barrett’s terrified, bulging eyes. The raw, predatory rage radiating from the young don was a physical force that made every elder in the room hold their breath.
“You spent three years sitting at my dinner table, Barrett,” Kendrick whispered, his voice a low, terrifying growl that sounded like the earth splitting open. “You held my daughter’s hand. You pretended to weep at my wife’s funeral. All while your hands were dripping with their blood.”
“Kendrick... please...” Barrett wheezed, his face turning an ugly shade of blue. “The council... the laws...”
Kendrick turned his head slightly, his dark eyes locking onto the oldest member of the council. “What is the verdict for treason and high theft against the family?”
The old elder didn't hesitate for a single second. He looked at the evidence on the screen, then down at the pathetic old man on the table. “Death. Total liquidation of his bloodline and assets.”
Kendrick turned back to Barrett, a cold, beautiful smile touching his lips. “The council has spoken.”
With a single, brutal twist of his powerful arms, Kendrick threw Barrett off the table. The two security guards who had previously taken orders from the old consigliere stepped forward, grabbing Barrett by his shoulders, dragging him kicking and screaming toward the private service elevator that led down to the basement execution rooms.
“Kendrick! No! You can't do this! Katherine! Save me!” Barrett’s screams faded as the heavy steel doors of the elevator slid shut, cutting off his voice forever.
Silence returned to the council chamber, the only sound the steady beating of the rain against the glass walls. Kendrick stood at the head of the table, his breathing perfectly calm, his posture imperial. He looked around the room, his intense gaze locking onto each elder until they all bowed their heads in absolute, complete submission. There was no longer a question of a forced marriage. There was no longer a question of his power. He was the undisputed, absolute king of the empire.
Slowly, Kendrick turned around, facing Willa.
The cold, lethal mask he wore for the council completely melted away, replaced by a deep, profound warmth that was meant for her alone. He walked over, stopping inches away from her, his dark eyes looking into her slate-grey ones with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
“It’s over, Katherine,” he whispered softly. “Your father has his justice. My wife has hers.”
Willa let out a long, ragged breath she felt she had been holding for six long years. A tear of relief escaped her eye, but before it could fall, Kendrick reached out, his large, scarred thumb gently wiping it away from her cheek. His hand lingered on her jawline, his touch incredibly gentle, a silent promise of a future they had both earned through blood and survival.
The heavy mahogany doors of the chamber slid open.
Titan walked into the room, his heavy tail thudding happily against the floor. Running right beside him was Penny. The little girl wore a beautiful white dress, her silver-blonde curls bouncing around her shoulders. She didn't look at the council elders; she didn't look at the dark room. She ran straight toward Willa, her tiny arms wrapping tightly around the young woman’s waist.
Willa knelt down, wrapping her arms around the little girl, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.
Penny pulled back slightly, her wide, pale gray eyes looking into Willa’s face. Then, with a voice that was clear, joyful, and completely free of the ghosts of her past, she spoke a perfect sentence that echoed through the silent chamber.
“I love you, Mommy.”
May you like
Willa’s heart exploded with a pure, celestial joy, the tears flowing freely now as she pulled the child back against her chest. Kendrick knelt down beside them, his powerful arms wrapping around both of them, shielding his new family from the cold world outside. Titan lay down at their feet, his massive head resting on Willa’s shoes, letting out a deep, contented sigh.
Outside, the storm continued to rage over Manhattan, but inside the fortress of the Ashford empire, the gates of hell had finally closed, and for the first time in their lives, they were all finally stepping into the light.
