Chapter 10 - The Sovereign House

Six months later.

The summer sun shone brilliantly over the Hudson Valley, illuminating the Costa estate in a blaze of warm, golden light. The dark river below was no longer churning with ice; it sparkled like a ribbon of blue silk under a cloudless sky.

The wall-to-wall glass of the grand foyer was open to the warm mountain breeze, carrying the scent of blooming pine trees and fresh grass through the cavernous space.

The interior of the house had changed.

The cold, sterile museum feel was gone. The stark white walls were adorned with warm, vibrant oil paintings; plush, comfortable furniture replaced the sharp geometric displays; and the ambient temperature was set to a comfortable seventy-two degrees.

The staff no longer walked like terrified ghosts. They moved with efficient, respectful pride, knowing that the house was governed not by capricious cruelty, but by absolute, fair authority.

Mrs. Gable stood near the floating glass staircase, holding a silver tray with two glasses of fresh lemonade. She was no longer wearing her heavy wool cardigan; she wore a light, crisp linen dress, her face relaxed, her eyes bright with peace.

Measured, graceful footsteps sounded from the upper gallery.

Harper descended the staircase.

She was no longer wearing the grey polyester uniform of a housemaid. She wore a tailored white linen suit that wrapped elegantly around her lean frame, her dark hair pinned back with a simple silver clasp. Her skin was healthy, glowing, and free of bruises, her grey eyes sharp, intelligent, and filled with quiet, unshakeable power.

As she reached the bottom landing, Mrs. Gable bowed her head slightly—not out of terror, but out of genuine, deep affection.

"The afternoon reports from the harbor clinic are ready, Miss Harper," Mrs. Gable said smoothly, handing her a leather folder. "The first hundred patients were seen today. Everything is running on schedule."

"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," Harper smiled, taking the folder. "How is the new kitchen staff adjusting?"

"Eager and very polite, ma'am," Mrs. Gable replied with a faint chuckle. "No one has complained about the ficus leaves."

Harper let out a soft, warm laugh that echoed pleasantly through the sunny foyer.

The heavy front doors of the estate opened, and Damian Costa stepped inside.

He wore a tailored dark grey suit, his coat unbuttoned, his dark hair catching the golden sunlight. He looked younger, the harsh, paranoid lines around his eyes softened by months of peace and genuine partnership.

He didn't hand his coat to a servant. He hung it on the brass stand himself, his eyes searching the foyer until they landed on Harper.

The moment he saw her, the formidable mob boss transformed into a man utterly captivated by his equal.

He walked across the marble floor, stepping close to her, wrapping his arm around her waist, and pulling her flush against his chest.

"How was Manhattan?" Harper asked, resting her hand on his broad chest, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of his heart.

"Tedious," Damian murmured, leaning down to press a deep, lingering kiss against her lips. "The union signed the new health benefits contract without a single protest. Arthur spent the entire meeting looking at his shoes."

"Good," Harper smiled, tracing the line of his jawline. "He knows what happens when people mess with our house."

Damian looked down at her—the woman who had entered his fortress with nothing but a toothbrush, a mountain of debt, and an unbreakable spine, and who had completely remade his world in her image.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out a slender silver key, and placed it in her palm, folding her fingers over it.

"What's this?" Harper asked, looking down at the key.

"The key to the deed of the estate," Damian whispered, his dark eyes shining with intense, devotion. "I had the title transferred into your name this morning, Harper. This house no longer belongs to the Costa family. It belongs to you."

Harper looked at the silver key, then raised her eyes to meet his gaze. She saw no fear, no control, no dark ledgers between them—only an absolute, sovereign partnership built on the iron foundation of mutual respect.

"It's a big house, Damian," Harper whispered, stepping closer to wrap her arms around his neck. "Are you sure you can afford the rent?"

Damian let out a deep, booming laugh that filled every corner of the sunny mansion, pulling her tight against his heart as the warm summer wind blew through the open glass walls, carrying away the last cold shadows of the past forever.
