Chapter 7 - The Phoenix Protocol

Ten minutes later, Julian stood in the hidden sub-basement control room beneath the boathouse. On the bank of monitors before him, he watched live feeds from across the estate.

Over fifty federal agents were currently swarming the mansion above, breaking down doors, seizing computers, and searching for the non-existent weapons cache Thomas had fabricated.

Julian inserted the black USB drive into the console.

A red prompt appeared on the screen: ACTIVATE PHOENIX PROTOCOL? (Y/N)

The Phoenix Protocol was a contingency plan designed by Julian’s father during the height of the mob wars in the 1990s. It was a complete, legal, and physical purge of the estate. With a single command, every server in the house would undergo a thermite wipe, destroying all hard drives and digital records. Simultaneously, a secret legal directive would be transmitted to the Supreme Court of Illinois, transferring all legal land titles and corporate assets into an anonymous, offshore blind trust held by an independent third party: Nora Bennett.

The DeLuca family empire would cease to exist on paper. The criminal dynasty would be erased in an instant, leaving the federal government holding an empty shell of brick and stone.

Julian looked at the screen. For four years, he had clung to this empire, using violence and money to fill the void Claire had left behind. He had believed that power was the only thing that could protect him.

Now, he realized that power was the very thing that had killed the woman he loved.

He reached out his hand and pressed Y.

Across the mansion above, silent electronic charges detonated inside every server rack. Red lights flashed once, and every computer screen in the house went black forever. Simultaneously, encryption keys scrambled the financial ledgers beyond recovery.

Julian pulled his suit jacket off, throwing it onto the floor, and stepped out onto the boathouse dock.

Rain poured from the black November sky, whipping Lake Michigan into a froth of dark waves. Tied to the slip was the sleek, fifty-foot black performance boat, its twin engines humming in a deep, rhythmic purr.

Dante stood at the helm, holding the spotlight.

In the covered cabin, sitting wrapped in dry wool blankets, were Nora and Lily.

As Julian stepped onto the boat, Nora rushed out of the cabin, looking at him with desperate relief. “Julian! You’re okay!”

Julian nodded, taking her by the shoulders. “The house is gone, Nora. The business is finished. The police will find nothing, and Thomas will never hurt anyone again.”

Nora closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering sigh of relief.

Julian walked into the cabin. Little Lily was sitting on the leather bench, clutching her stuffed rabbit. When she saw Julian, her small face lit up with a brilliant smile.

“Daddy!” she chirped, holding out her arms.

Julian knelt before his daughter. He lifted her into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest, listening to the steady, precious beat of her little heart.

“We’re going away, little bird,” Julian whispered into her soft dark hair. “To a place where there are no chandeliers, no marble floors, and no shadows.”

He looked up at Nora, extending his hand to her.

“Both of you.”

Nora looked at Julian’s hand—the hand of a man who had destroyed his past to build a future for her friend’s child. She stepped forward and placed her hand in his.

“Where are we going?” Nora asked softly.

May you like

Julian looked out through the cabin glass at the dark, vast expanse of the lake stretching toward the horizon.

“Somewhere warm,” Julian said, a soft, genuine smile touching his lips for the first time in four years. “Where we can learn how to dance again.”
