Chapter 10 - THE PROTECTOR’S VOW

Rain poured from the black night sky in blinding sheets, turning the isolated four-lane highway near the Wisconsin border into a treacherous river of dark water and ice.

Three miles north of the state line, Grace’s heavy armored SUV was rammed from the side by a black commercial truck with its lights turned off!

CRASH!

The heavy SUV skidded wildly across the slick pavement, sparks flying into the dark air as its tires lost traction. The lead security vehicle spun out of control, crashing into the highway guardrail!

Inside the rear cabin of the armored SUV, Grace held four-year-old Lily tightly against her chest, wrapping her own body around the child as the vehicle slammed into a ditch beside the dark woods!

The air bags deployed with a deafening bang.

Outside, three men in dark raincoats stepped out of the black truck, drawing suppressed automatic rifles as they approached the wrecked SUV.

“Check the back!” the lead gunman ordered over the roar of the storm. “Finish the woman and the kid!”

Before the gunman could reach the SUV’s rear door—

ENGINE ROARS CUT THROUGH THE THUNDER!

A black custom Dodge Charger tore down the highway at over one hundred miles an hour, swerving sharply and slamming directly into the black truck, pinning it against the trees!

The driver-side door of the Charger burst open.

Adrian Cross stepped out into the pouring rain.

He didn't wear a vest. He didn't carry a rifle. He held his single SIG Sauer pistol in his right hand, his face a chilling, demonic vision of absolute, unadulterated vengeance.

The lead gunman raised his rifle—

THWIP! THWIP!

Adrian fired two shots with terrifying, inhuman precision. The bullets tore through the gunman’s chest, dropping him instantly into the muddy water.

The second gunman panicked, firing a wild burst of automatic fire into the dark rain. Adrian stepped ducked behind the Charger’s door, leaned out, and placed a single round cleanly through the man's throat.

The third gunman turned to run into the woods.

Adrian didn't shoot. He sprinted through the rain like a dark predator, tackling the man into the deep mud, grabbing him by his hair, and slamming his face violently against a fallen tree trunk!

"WHERE IS MARCUS?!" Adrian roared into the storm.

"He's... he's in the cabin... half a mile down the dirt road!" the gunman screamed in agony. "Don't kill me! Please!"

Adrian slammed the man's head into the wood one last time, rendering him unconscious, then turned and ran toward the wrecked armored SUV.

He ripped the bent rear door open with his bare hands.

"GRACE!"

Inside, Grace was coughing through the smoke of the air bags, but she was conscious. Beneath her, Lily opened her brown eyes, crying softly but completely unhurt. The armored plating of the custom SUV had absorbed the entire impact.

"Adrian..." Grace sobbed, reaching out for him.

Adrian pulled them both out of the wreck, lifting Lily into his left arm while holding Grace tightly against his side with his right.

"Are you hurt?" Adrian checked frantically, his hands scanning Grace’s face and shoulders. "Did you hit your head?"

"We're okay... we're okay," Grace wept, resting her forehead against his chest. "The car held."

Dominic’s convoy of four black SUVs pulled up onto the shoulder of the highway, headlights illuminating the rain. Ten guards rushed out, securing the perimeter and checking the surviving security detail.

Adrian handed Lily over to Dominic. "Take them to the estate. Keep them in the safe room until I get back."

"Adrian, no!" Grace grabbed his arm, her eyes wide with terror. "Don't go!"

Adrian looked down at her, his dark eyes filled with a quiet, absolute promise.

"It ends tonight, Grace," Adrian said gently. "I'm never letting a ghost threaten our daughter again."

He turned, picked up an automatic rifle from the floor of a security SUV, and walked down the dark dirt road into the woods.

Half a mile deep into the trees, a small, abandoned hunting cabin sat surrounded by tall pines. A faint light flickered through the dirty window.

Adrian kicked the front door open, stepping inside.

Marcus Hale sat in a wooden chair near a small wood stove, holding a shotgun across his lap. His body was thin, scarred, his left arm uselessly pinned against his side from his previous wounds.

He looked up at Adrian, a bitter, tragic smile touching his pale lips.

"You always were faster than anyone else, Adrian," Marcus whispered rasply.

Adrian stood six feet away, holding his rifle lowered at his side. He looked at his former friend—a man who had allowed bitterness and war to eat away his humanity until there was nothing left but dust.

"It didn't have to be like this, Marcus," Adrian said softly.

"It was always going to be like this," Marcus sneered, his hands trembling as he raised the shotgun with his good right arm. "Men like us... we don't get happy endings, Adrian. We die in the dark."

"I used to believe that," Adrian said quietly.

Marcus squeezed the trigger.

THWIP.

Adrian fired a single, merciful shot.

Marcus froze, the shotgun slipping from his hand, clattering against the floorboards. He fell back into the wooden chair, his eyes staring blankly at the ceiling, the light slowly fading from his gaze.

Adrian stood alone in the quiet cabin, the hum of the rain falling gently against the roof. He lowered his weapon, let out a long, slow breath, and walked out into the night.

EPILOGUE: THE KINGDOM OF LIGHTOne year later.

Early summer brought warm sunshine, blooming lilies, and clear blue skies to Lake Forest.

Hawthorne Estate was open to the sun. The heavy iron gates at the entrance were unlocked, guarded only by two polite men in navy blazers who greeted visitors with warm smiles.

In the private rear garden, three hundred guests sat beneath white silk canopies.

At the front of the altar stood Adrian Cross. He wore an elegant dark blue tuxedo, looking healthy, powerful, and remarkably at peace. Beside him stood Dominic Vance as his best man.

The string quartet began to play a soft, romantic melody.

Four-year-old Lily walked down the white carpet aisle, wearing a tiny yellow dress, carefully dropping red rose petals onto the grass from a small wicker basket. The guests smiled and clapped softly as she reached the altar, bowing dramatically to her father.

Then, the crowd stood up.

Grace walked down the aisle on the arm of Vincent DeLuca—who had stepped forward to act as her escort in a gesture of absolute, permanent family solidarity.

Grace looked breathtakingly beautiful. She wore a simple, silk gown adorned with hand-sewn pearls—a dress designed specifically for her by Vivian DeLuca’s new fashion house in New York. Her brown hair fell in soft, elegant curls over her shoulders, and her face radiated pure, unadulterated happiness.

She reached the altar. Vincent gently handed her hand to Adrian, stepping back with a firm, respectful nod.

Adrian took Grace’s hand into his large, warm grip. He looked down into her brown eyes, seeing his entire world reflected back at him.

The minister smiled, holding his hands over the couple.

"We are gathered here today to unite Adrian Cross and Grace Carter in holy matrimony," the minister spoke clearly. "A union forged not through contracts or fear, but through love, truth, and forgiveness."

The minister looked at Adrian. "Do you, Adrian, take Grace to be your wedded wife, to love and cherish, in peace and in war, until death do you part?"

Adrian looked into Grace’s eyes, his voice clear, strong, and echoing across the quiet gardens.

"I do," Adrian declared. "With my life, my soul, and every breath I have left."

"And do you, Grace, take Adrian to be your wedded husband?"

Grace smiled, tears of pure joy glistening in her eyes.

"I do," she whispered softly. "Forever."

"I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Adrian leaned down, wrapping his strong arms around Grace’s waist, pulling her close as he pressed his lips to hers in a deep, breathtaking kiss that seemed to seal every wound of the past.

THE GUESTS ERUPTED INTO THUNDEROUS APPLAUSE!

Lily cheered, jumping up and down, clapping her small hands as Adrian lifted Grace off her feet, laughing happily under the bright summer sun.

Hand in hand, Adrian and Grace turned to walk back down the aisle together, holding Lily between them.
