Chapter 5 - The Trap in the Pantry

Clara walked down the grand marble staircase with a stone-cold expression, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Julian Vance was one of the most powerful men in the Savelli syndicate. He had managed the family's legitimate and illegitimate wealth for over a decade. He walked the halls with absolute authority, second only to Matthias himself.
If Clara simply walked up to Matthias and accused his top financial officer of poisoning his mother over stolen funds, Julian would destroy her before the sun went down.
She needed incontrovertible proof.
Clara retreated to the main walk-in pantry—a cold, stainless-steel room lined with shelves of imported oils, rare spices, and locked supply boxes.
She pulled out her black notebook, her fingers trembling slightly as she wrote down Julian’s name alongside the dates of the financial audits and Odette’s medical collapses.
Suddenly, the heavy door of the pantry clicked open.
Clara spun around, instantly hiding the notebook behind her back.
Julian Vance stepped into the cool room. He was a tall, sleek man in his late forties, wearing a thousand-dollar blue suit. On his right ring finger, glowing dully under the fluorescent lights, was a massive, square black onyx ring.
"Miss Whitmore," Julian said, his voice smooth and oily. "I saw you coming out of the matriarch’s room again."
"I was clearing her breakfast tray, Mr. Vance," Clara replied, keeping her voice as steady as possible, taking a subtle step back toward the steel shelves.
Julian stepped closer, his eyes scanning her plush figure with a mixture of cold condescension and faint disgust. "You're spending a lot of time up there for a cook. The last three chefs barely stayed in her room for thirty seconds."
"Perhaps that's why they failed," Clara said flatly.
Julian smiled—a thin, reclusive line that didn't reach his eyes. He reached out to adjust his Italian silk tie, bringing the hand with the black ring within inches of Clara’s face.
"You should be careful, Clara," Julian murmured, his tone laced with a subtle, lethal threat. "This house is full of old ghosts. People who ask too many questions... tend to get stomach aches."
Before Clara could respond, the pantry door opened wider, and Matthias stepped inside.
The temperature in the room instantly plummeted. Matthias’s slate-grey eyes swept over the narrow space, taking in Julian’s proximity to Clara and the defensive stance Clara had assumed against the shelving unit.
"Is there a problem here, Julian?" Matthias asked, his deep voice dripping with lethal danger.
Julian instantly straightened his suit jacket, stepping back smoothly. "Not at all, Matthias. I was just reminding Miss Whitmore that we expect total efficiency. Your mother's health is our top priority."
"My mother's health is my concern," Matthias growled, stepping between Julian and Clara, his massive back effectively shielding her from the older man. "Go back to the office, Julian. The Swiss bank accounts need your attention."
Julian bowed his head slightly. "Of course, Matthias." He cast one final, warning glance at Clara before stepping out into the hallway.
When the door closed, Matthias turned around to face Clara. He saw the slight tremor in her hands and the intense pale shade of her skin.
"What did he say to you?" Matthias demanded, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying pitch.
"Nothing," Clara lied quickly, realizing she wasn't ready to spring the trap yet. "He was just... giving instructions."
Matthias reached out, his hand gripping her shoulder with a firm, protective weight. "If anyone in this house frightens you, Clara—anyone at all—you tell me. Do you understand?"
May you like
Clara looked up into his fierce grey eyes, seeing the genuine, burning fiercely beneath his cold mob-boss exterior.
"I understand, Matthias," she whispered.
