Chapter 5 - The King's Debt

The study was quiet, the only sound the crackle of the fire and the distant, rhythmic hum of the city below.

Noelle sat back down, her mind slowly settling into the reality of her new life. She was no longer Noelle the waitress. She was the mother of the Marchetti triplets, living in a mansion, surrounded by guards, and sharing a secret with the most dangerous man in the state.

Damian walked back to his desk, his expression hardening as he picked up his phone.

“Reyes,” he said into the receiver. “Bring Dr. Vance to the warehouse on Pier 4. Now.”

He hung up, looking at Noelle with a cold, absolute certainty that made her shiver.

“What are you going to do to him?” she asked.

“He stole my children's mother,” Damian said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying hum. “He let you live in grease and dirt for a year while he spent Sofia's money. He’s going to pay his debt, Noelle. In full.”

He stood up, buttoning his shirt, and grabbed his coat from the chair.

“You should go back upstairs,” he said, his voice softening slightly as he looked at her. “They’ll be awake soon. They’ll want their mother.”

“Damian,” she called out as he reached the door.

He stopped, turning his head to look at her over his shoulder.

“Thank you,” she said. “For bringing me here. For... for not lying to me.”

Damian looked at her for a long, quiet moment. The coldness in his eyes seemed to melt, just for a second, revealing a deep, ancient sorrow of his own.

“You’re their mother, Noelle,” he said. “I may be a monster to this city, but I don't steal from mothers. Sleep well.”

He walked out, the heavy oak door clicking shut behind him.

Noelle stood up, wrapping the warm blanket back around her shoulders. She walked out of the study and climbed the stairs to the nursery, her feet moving with a lightness she hadn't felt in fourteen months.

She pushed the door open. The morning sun was just beginning to peek through the heavy velvet curtains, casting a soft, golden light over the room.

In the first crib, Leo was sitting up, his big, hazel eyes blinking sleepily as he clutched his stuffed rabbit. When he saw Noelle, his little face lit up with a brilliant, toothless smile.

“Mama,” he chirped.

Beside him, Matteo and Sofia began to stir, their little arms reaching out as they heard his voice.

Noelle walked over, a beautiful, genuine smile breaking across her face as she reached into the crib to lift them.

The empty spaces in her arms were gone, filled with the warmth of her children’s bodies. The storm outside had passed, and for the first time in her life, Noelle Bishop knew exactly who she was.

She was their mother, and she was finally home.
