Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Well

The clash at the east gate was short, violent, and absolute. Vincent’s men, prepared for the assault, had cut down Valetti’s mercenaries before they could even reach the main driveway. Vincent himself had fired the final shot, his face spattered with rain and blood as he stood over the leader of the breach.
"Who told you the twins were weak?" Vincent had demanded, his boot pressing hard against the man's shattered shoulder.
"The... the doctor," the mercenary gasped, his eyes wide with the terror of a man looking at his executioner. "The doctor... she said... she said they wouldn't last the week. She said... the house was ours for the taking..."
Vincent’s heart went entirely cold.
He did not wait for the man to finish. He turned and ran toward the mansion, his boots throwing up chunks of wet gravel.
Evelyn Harper.
She had not been trying to save his children; she had been keeping them sick, acting as an informant for the Valetti family, waiting for the perfect moment of weakness to strike.
He burst through the front doors of the mansion, his security team scrambling behind him. He bypassed the main stairs, taking the steps to the west wing three at a time. His mind was a chaotic storm of fear and fury. If Harper had been poisoning the twins, then every medication, every IV drip she had administered was a weapon.
He reached the heavy oak doors of the bedroom and threw them open.
The room was silent, but it was not the silence of death.
Dr. Harper was standing near the medical cart, her hand shaking as she held a syringe filled with a clear, colorless liquid. Grace stood between her and Noah’s bed, her wooden spoon raised like a weapon, her face pale but determined.
"Step away from the children, Evelyn," Grace said, her voice low and dangerous.
"You don't understand, you stupid maid," Harper hissed, her professional demeanor completely gone, replaced by the desperate panic of a cornered traitor. "The Valettis will destroy this entire city. Vincent is finished. If these kids die, the Callahan empire collapses. I’m just doing what’s necessary."
"You are a monster," Grace said, stepping forward.
Harper raised the syringe, aiming it at Grace’s face, but before she could press the plunger, Vincent was there.
With a roar of pure, animalistic fury, he grabbed Harper’s wrist, twisting it until the bone cracked. The syringe fell to the floor, shattering on the marble. Vincent threw her against the wall, his hand clamping around her throat with a suffocating, lethal grip.
"You poisoned my children," Vincent whispered, his voice so quiet it was terrifying.
"Vincent... please..." Harper gasped, her face turning blue.
"Mason!" Vincent roared, not breaking eye contact with the dying doctor. "Take her to the basement. I want the names of everyone she worked with. And I want them before the sun rises."
Mason dragged the sobbing doctor out of the room, leaving Vincent alone with Grace and the twins.
Vincent slumped against the bedpost, his chest heaving. He looked at Noah and Lily, who were both sleeping peacefully, their breathing steady thanks to Grace’s lavender compress and the clean, unadulterated air of the room.
He looked at Grace. She was trembling now, the adrenaline of the confrontation finally wearing off. Her hands were shaking as she smoothed down her apron.
"You knew," Vincent said.
"I saw her adjusting the IV drip when Noah’s fever spiked," Grace whispered, her eyes filling with tears. "The dosage was too high. I remember... I remember when Ruby was sick, the doctors were so careful with the measurements. Harper was careless. She wanted him to stay weak."
Vincent walked over to her. He did not speak, but he reached out and took her shaking hands in his. For a man who had built his life on violence, his touch was incredibly gentle.

"You saved my son," he said, his voice cracking with an emotion he had buried years ago. "You saved them both."
"They are beautiful children, Vincent," she said, using his name for the first time. "They deserve a chance to grow up."
