Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of the East Wing

While the tactical teams assembled in the basement ops room, the nursery on the second floor remained bathed in the soft, warm glow of morning light filtering through the sheer silk drapes.

The horror of the three o'clock screaming match had begun to fade into a strange, fragile calm.

Lily and Rose were sitting cross-legged on the thick sheepskin rug near the fireplace, playing quietly with a set of wooden building blocks. For the first time in two months, their small faces were free of the dark, hollow exhaustion that had made them look like frail ghosts. Their laughter, though quiet and cautious, sounded like real music in the massive, quiet house.

Nora sat on the edge of the bed, her fingers busily stitching up a torn seam on a green wool blanket using a small travel sewing kit she had retrieved from her uniform pocket. Her gray apron was still dusted with the white synthetic stuffing from the disemboweled teddy bear, which now lay carefully wrapped in a clear plastic biohazard bag inside the walk-in closet.

The door opened softly, and Jonah Pike stepped into the room, accompanied by two armed Mercer security guards wearing suit jackets over their tactical vests.

"Keene," Jonah said, gesturing toward the hallway. "Boss wants you and the kids moved downstairs to the primary vault wing."

Nora set her sewing down, her medical instincts immediately flaring up. "The girls just calmed down, Mr. Pike. Moving them into an underground concrete bunker right now will trigger another anxiety spike."

Jonah looked at the twins, his hardened face softening just a fraction as he saw them building a wooden tower on the rug. "The estate is on Level One lockdown. Mr. Mercer is leaving the property to execute a security operation. Until he returns, no one stays above ground."

Lily looked up from her blocks, her small face instantly clouding over with worry. "Is Daddy going to fight the bad men?"

Nora stood up immediately, stepping between the guards and the children, her voice smooth and reassuring. "Your daddy is just going to handle some work at the office, sweetheart. We're going to go downstairs to the cozy room and play a game."

She looked at Jonah, her gaze sharp and questioning. "Where is he going?"

"That's not your concern, Keene," Jonah said flatly. "Pick up the girls' things. We move in two minutes."

Before Nora could gather the children's jackets, the heavy brass intercom on the wall beside the door chimed with a sharp, high-pitched double beep.

The voice of the front gate security guard came through the speaker, laced with nervous static: "Ops Room, this is Gate One. We have a primary guest vehicle approaching the main archway. It's Miss Vivian Mercer's silver Aston Martin. She's claiming she has an emergency family meeting with Mr. Mercer regarding the girls' medical reports."

Jonah’s head snapped toward the intercom speaker, his hand instantly dropping to the radio on his shoulder. "Gate One, this is Pike. Hold her at the barrier. Do not open the gate under any circumstances. Mr. Mercer is on his way down to—"

He was cut off by the sound of a sharp electronic buzz echoing from the estate's master central control panel.

The security system's automated voice spoke through the ceiling speakers: "Master Override Code accepted. Guest vehicle cleared for courtyard entry."

Jonah swore viciously under his breath. "She has the master override code from Clara's estate file. She bypassed the gate protocol from her car."

He turned to his two guards, his command instant and absolute: "Lock this door. Secure the windows. Nobody enters this wing!"

He drew his sidearm, racking the slide with a sharp metallic clack, and sprinted out into the main corridor toward the central staircase. The two guards immediately closed the heavy mahogany nursery door, sliding the heavy brass security bolts into place and taking positions on either side of the frame.

Inside the room, the fragile peace exploded into fresh panic.

Rose dropped her wooden blocks, scrambling across the rug and throwing her arms around Nora’s waist, burying her face into the maid's apron. "Nora! Is Aunt Vivian coming up? She told us not to talk to you! She said if we talked to the nurse, the monster would get bigger!"

Nora dropped to her knees, gathering both Lily and Rose into her arms, pulling them tight against her chest. The dark, terrifying picture was becoming completely crystal clear in her mind.

Vivian Mercer hadn't stayed on Shelter Island. She had realized that the electronic signal from the teddy bear had been severed at three o'clock. She knew the camera feed had gone dark, and she was coming to Villa Mercer to assess the damage, recover the hardware, or execute the final phase of her plan before Declan could uncover the truth.

"Listen to me, both of you," Nora whispered urgently into the girls' ears, her voice rock-solid despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. "You are going to go into the walk-in closet right now. You are going to sit under the big wool coats in the back, keep your hands over your ears, and you do not make a single sound until I open the door. Do you understand me?"

"Nora, don't leave us!" Lily sobbed, her small hands clutching Nora’s gray collar.

"I am not leaving you, sweetheart," Nora said, kissing both of their pale foreheads before guiding them firmly into the spacious, cedar-lined walk-in closet. She pulled a thick row of winter coats over their small bodies, giving them a final, reassuring smile before pulling the heavy mirror-finished closet door shut, leaving only a half-inch crack for air.

She turned back toward the room just as a sudden, violent thud echoed through the heavy mahogany entry door.

"Open the door!" a sharp, aristocratic female voice commanded from the hallway. "I am Vivian Mercer! I hold power of attorney over this estate! Stand down this instant, you idiots!"

"Miss Mercer, step away from the threshold!" one of the guards outside yelled back. "Mr. Mercer's orders are absolute! No entry!"

A quiet, strange hissing sound echoed from beneath the door frame.

Nora’s trained medical senses registered the sharp, chemical odor instantly: micro-pressurized stun gas, a non-lethal tactical compound used by high-end private security teams to clear enclosed spaces without firing a shot.

Outside, the two guards let out choked, coughing gasps, followed by the heavy, thudding sound of two large bodies collapsing onto the hardwood floor.

Nora looked around the room frantically. There were no weapons. No sidearms, no tactical batons, no heavy iron pokers by the gas fireplace. There were only her cleaning supplies, a plastic spray bottle of industrial window cleaner, her small sewing kit, and the pink safety scissors resting on the nightstand.

She snatched the spray bottle of industrial solvent and the pair of dull craft scissors, placing herself directly between the entry door and the closet where the children were hidden.

The heavy brass lock turned with a loud, mechanical click.

The mahogany door swung slowly inward, revealing Vivian Mercer standing in the doorway, framed by the drifting white haze of lingering chemical smoke.

She was dressed immaculately in a tailored cream-colored cashmere suit, her blonde hair pulled back into a flawless chignon, holding a sleek black tactical gas dispenser in her gloved right hand. Behind her stood two mercenary security guards wearing plain black civilian suits, their suppressed handguns held low at their sides.

Vivian stepped into the nursery, her polished leather pumps clicking lightly against the hardwood floor. Her eyes swept past the disarranged bed, past the empty toy rug, and settled on Nora standing in the center of the room.

"Where are my nieces?" Vivian asked, her voice impossibly calm, cultured, and devoid of any human warmth.

Nora raised the spray bottle of industrial solvent, her grip firm and unyielding.

"You're not going anywhere near those children," Nora said.
