Chapter 9 - THE CLEAN SWEEP

The sun rose over the Baltimore harbor at 6:30 AM, casting a golden light over the cold, grey water of the bay.
By 8:00 AM, the war was over.
Dominic’s strike teams had executed a flawless, simultaneous purge across four city districts. Captains Vane and Torrio were eliminated inside their homes before they could draw a weapon. The Moretti headquarters at the downtown docks was surrounded and destroyed, their primary leaders arrested by federal authorities using anonymous financial evidence provided directly from Vincent Cole’s seized laptop.
Vincent himself was handed over to the harbor police, facing life imprisonment for murder, treason, and conspiracy—his political power completely dismantled in a single morning.
At 10:00 AM, a long line of shiny black luxury sedans pulled up to the main entrance of the Marchetti estate in Ridgewood Heights.
Dante stepped out of the rear seat of the lead vehicle, supported by a heavy wooden cane. He wore a tailored black coat over his bandages, his face pale but his posture towering and absolute.
Beside him stepped Elena Cross.
She no longer wore the navy blue housekeeper’s apron or the soft-soled shoes designed to make her invisible. She wore a simple, elegant dark wool coat Dante had ordered for her, her dark hair pinned back neatly, her posture erect and proud.
The entire remaining domestic staff and security team were lined up in the grand foyer of the estate, standing in absolute, terrified silence. Dolores, the head housekeeper, stood near the front, her face pale as she looked from Dante to the maid standing at his side.
Dante walked into the center of the foyer, leaning heavily on his cane. His dark eyes scanned the faces of his staff.
“As of this morning,” Dante announced, his deep voice carrying through the marble halls, “Vincent Cole has been permanently removed from this organization. Dolores.”
The head housekeeper stepped forward, her knees visibly trembling. “Yes, Mr. Marchetti?”
“You are retired,” Dante said flatly. “You will receive a full pension and vacate the estate by noon today.”
Dolores gasped, her eyes widening, but she did not dare object.
Dante turned his eyes to Elena.
“Effective immediately,” Dante declared, “Elena Cross is the director of this estate. She answers exclusively to me. Anyone who disobeys her orders, anyone who speaks to her with anything less than absolute respect, will answer to Dominic personally.”
The staff bowed their heads instantly, murmuring their soft agreement.

Elena looked up at Dante, her dark eyes filling with quiet shock. She opened her mouth to speak, but Dante gently caught her hand, leaning down close to her ear.
“You are never going to hide in the dark of this house again,” he whispered softly.
