Chapter 10 - The Light on the Water

Five years later.
The summer evening was soft and warm over Long Island Sound. The sky was painted in long, breathtaking streaks of violet, gold, and deep rose as the sun dipped beneath the western horizon.
On the wide wooden pier extending out into the blue water, an eight-year-old Mia was sitting on the edge, her legs dangling over the gentle waves, holding a small fishing rod. Beside her sat Marco Rossi, patiently teaching her how to tie a proper nautical knot on the nylon line.
Farther back on the grassy hill overlooking the water stood the main terrace of the estate.
Aleandro Moretti stood by the stone railing, wearing a casual linen shirt and dark trousers. His dark hair had more silver at the temples now, but his face was unlined, peaceful, his clear gray eyes reflecting the warm colors of the sunset.
Elena walked out from the house, carrying a pitcher of fresh lemonade and two glasses. She looked radiant, her hair glowing in the evening light, wearing a simple blue summer dress that fluttered gently in the sea breeze.
Aleandro turned as she approached, taking the tray from her hands and setting it on the teak table. He wrapped his arm around her waist, pulling her back against his chest, resting his chin softly on her shoulder as they watched their daughter on the pier.
"She’s getting very good at those knots," Elena observed with a quiet smile. "Marco says she has the hands of a sailor."
"She has the mind of a captain," Aleandro corrected softly, a proud smile touching his lips. "She told me this morning that she plans to study ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins when she grows up."
Elena laughed softly, leaning her head back against his chest. "She’s only eight, Aleandro."
"She was three when she saved my life, sweetheart," Aleandro murmured, his voice rich with deep affection. "I wouldn't bet against her."
They stood in quiet togetherness for a long time, watching the white sailboats drifting across the calm surface of the Sound as the twilight settled over the estate.
In the distance, the soft, warm lights of the Mia Carter Pediatric Vision Center came on one by one, shining like golden stars against the darkening hills. The center had treated over four thousand children in the last five years, restoring sight to hundreds who had been told their condition was hopeless.
Aleandro reached into his pocket, his long fingers finding the small, worn yellow plastic flashlight that Mia had given him on her fourth birthday—a keepsake he carried with him wherever he went.
He looked down at the tiny toy in his palm, then at the beautiful woman standing in his arms, and finally at the bright lights of the foundation shining in the distance.
The dark glasses were gone forever. The silent corridors were filled with music and laughter. The poison was washed away, and the empire that had once been built on blood and secrecy was now a beacon of hope for thousands of lives.
Elena turned in his arms, reaching up to lay her hand gently against his cheek, her hazel eyes reflecting the first evening stars appearing in the sky above.
"What are you looking at, Aleandro?" she asked softly.
Aleandro smiled—a deep, tranquil, unclouded smile that came straight from his soul.
He leaned down, pressing his lips gently against hers, tasting the sweet salt of the ocean breeze and the warmth of a love that had defied the darkest shadows of the world.

"I'm looking at my world, Elena," Aleandro whispered against her lips. "And it is beautiful."
Together, hand in hand, they turned and walked back toward the warm, bright lights of their home, leaving the darkness behind them forever.
