Chapter 5 - The Choice

By late afternoon, a black town car was parked near the grand front steps of the estate. The trunk was loaded with several brand-new leather suitcases containing high-end clothing, personal items, and documents that Lorenzo’s team had quietly procured and replaced for Nora over the past two days.
Nora stood in the grand entrance hall, looking around at the magnificent architecture, the warm sunlight streaming through the stained-glass transom, and the quiet dignity of the house that had saved her life.
Mrs. Gable walked up to her, holding a small, carefully wrapped cardboard box. She handed it to Nora with a warm, maternal smile.
"What is this?" Nora asked softly.
"Open it, my dear," Mrs. Gable encouraged gently.
Nora carefully untied the string and opened the box. Inside, resting in layers of protective bubble wrap, was a delicate, hand-painted ceramic bowl with blue floral patterns around the rim.
Nora gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. It was her mother's bowl.
"How... how is this possible?" Nora stammered, tears instantly filling her eyes. "My apartment... Lorenzo said it burned down..."
"The apartment burned, yes," Lorenzo’s voice echoed from the top of the staircase.
He descended the stairs slowly, dressed in an open-collared white shirt and dark trousers, looking relaxed yet impeccably commanding.
"My men arrived at your apartment twenty minutes before the Bertinelli thugs set the fire," Lorenzo explained as he reached the bottom stair. "Vincent had orders to retrieve anything of personal, non-replaceable value to you. That bowl was sitting on your kitchen counter. It was the first thing they secured."
Nora held the ceramic bowl against her chest, her tears spilling over her eyelashes and running down her cheeks. "You saved it..."
"I told you," Lorenzo said, walking up to stand directly in front of her, "some things cannot be replaced. I make it a point never to let those things be destroyed."
Nora wiped her cheeks with her sleeve, setting the box carefully on a nearby side table. She looked at Lorenzo, her heart overflowing with a fierce, powerful warmth that obliterated every shadow left in her soul.
"Your driver is ready," Lorenzo said quietly, his dark eyes searching her face with an unreadable depth. "He will take you to a luxury high-rise apartment downtown. The lease is paid for two years in your name. Your job at Vanderbilt is waiting for you on Monday morning. You are completely free, Nora. No security guards. No restrictions. No debts."
Nora looked out the open front doors at the waiting town car.
Freedom. Real, absolute, uncompromised freedom. The ability to walk down any street, answer to no one, make her own choices, and live her life on her own terms. It was everything she had fought for, everything she had dreamed of while living under Greg's thumb.
She turned back to face Lorenzo.
"You gave me everything I asked for," Nora said softly.
"You gave yourself everything," Lorenzo corrected gently. "I merely provided the space."
Nora walked up to him, stopping mere inches from his chest. She looked into his dark, striking eyes—the eyes of a man who ruled an underworld empire, yet had treated her with more respect, honor, and care than anyone she had ever known.
"You told me on my first morning here that the price of survival was trading freedom," Nora murmured, a subtle, beautiful smile lighting up her face.
"I was wrong," Lorenzo admitted freely. "Freedom is not something that can be traded. It can only be shared."
Nora reached up, taking both of his large hands in hers, intertwining her fingers with his.
"I don't want the downtown apartment, Lorenzo," she declared clearly, her voice ringing out through the quiet entrance hall with absolute, unwavering certainty.
Lorenzo’s eyes widened slightly in rare surprise. "Nora... you don't have to stay out of obligation or fear—"
"I’m not staying out of obligation," she interrupted, stepping even closer until her body was pressed gently against his. "And I'm certainly not staying out of fear. For the last two years, people have decided who I was, where I belonged, and what I was allowed to want."
She tilted her chin up, her hazel eyes blazing with pure, undeniable fire.
"This is my choice, Lorenzo. I want my career. I want my independence. But I want to come home to this house every night. I want to build a life with the man who respected my strength when I was broken on his floor."
Lorenzo stared down at her for a long, breath-taking second, as if processing the sheer weight of her words.
Then, a breathtaking, radiant smile broke across his dark features. He wrapped his powerful arms around her waist, lifting her effortlessly off her feet and pulling her flush against his body.
Nora laughed—a bright, joyous sound that echoed up into the high ceilings of the mansion—and wrapped her arms tightly around his neck.
When he set her down, he didn't let her go. He leaned in and kissed her with a deep, passionate intensity that promised protection, loyalty, and an everlasting partnership built on mutual respect.

Out on the driveway, Vincent walked past the town car, signaled to the driver to unload the luggage from the trunk, and smiled faintly to himself as he walked back toward the security gates.
Inside the grand hall, Nora leaned her head against Lorenzo’s chest, listening to the calm, steady rhythm of his heart. The price everyone thought she had to pay was her freedom. But she had refused to pay it—and in doing so, she had won everything.
