Chapter 8 - The Light in the Window

One year later.
The evening sky over the Vermont mountains was a breathtaking tapestry of deep crimson, gold, and soft lavender.
A soft, warm light glowed from every single window of the historic Cole mansion, making the grand stone structure look like a beacon of warmth standing against the evening sky.
In the second-floor study—the room that had once been locked away in darkness and grief—the high-backed leather reading chair sat near the windows.
Beside the chair, the old wooden music box lay open, completely restored, filled with new photographs alongside the old ones.
There was a photograph of Elizabeth and Grace in the rose garden.
Beside it was a new photograph of Nathaniel, Maria, and Lily standing together on the high Vermont hill, laughing under a summer rainbow.
Nathaniel stood by the tall window, watching the stars begin to twinkle over the dark mountain peaks.
Maria stepped quietly into the room behind him, holding a sleeping four-year-old Lily in her arms. She carried her over to the soft velvet sofa near the fireplace and laid her down gently under a hand-knitted wool blanket.
Nathaniel walked over, kneeling beside the sofa, and gently tucked the blanket around Lily’s shoulders.
Lily opened her sleepy brown eyes for a brief second, looking up into Nathaniel’s warm, loving face.
“Nathaniel?” Lily murmured sleepily.
“Yes, sweetheart?” he whispered back.
“The pretty lady came back tonight,” Lily whispered, her voice soft as a feather.
Nathaniel smiled gently, holding Maria’s hand tightly in his own.
“What did she say, Lily?”
Lily closed her eyes, a sweet, peaceful smile resting on her face as she drifted off into deep sleep.
“She said she’s happy now,” Lily murmured softly. “Because you remembered how to live.”
Nathaniel closed his eyes, taking a deep, long breath of warm night air into his lungs.
He looked up at the moonlit sky through the window, feeling a profound, absolute sense of quiet peace settle into every corner of his heart.

The long night of shadow was over.
The truth had brought freedom, love had brought healing, and in the quiet house on the hill, light had finally returned to stay forever.
