Chapter 4 - The Gathering Storm

By noon the following day, the atmosphere inside the Moretti mansion had transformed completely.

The oppressive silence that had ruled the stone corridors for years was broken by the light, pattering sounds of small feet. Emma was running down the main grand hallway, wearing a plush yellow sundress that Alessandro had ordered his assistants to fetch from the city's finest children's boutique.

In her hands, she held a silver spoon, using it to chase a small, fluffy golden retriever puppy that Alessandro had brought to the estate hours earlier.

"Slow down, little princess!" Marco called out with a rare, beaming smile as he walked beside her, his massive frame acting as a gentle shield to ensure she didn't trip on the marble steps. The hardened syndicate enforcer, who had spent fifteen years breaking heads for the Moretti family, was now carrying a pink plastic tea set in his tactical vest pocket.

Inside the formal dining room, Alessandro sat at the head of the long oak table. Beside him sat Sophia, wrapped in a soft cashmere shawl, color slowly returning to her cheeks as she ate a hot bowl of soup prepared personally by the estate's master chef.

The heavy mahogany doors opened, and Dr. Vance stepped into the room, holding an encrypted laptop tablet.

"Alessandro," Dr. Vance said, his face solemn. "We have a situation. You need to see this."

Alessandro set his napkin down immediately. "Sophia, stay here with Emma. Marco is right outside."

He followed Vance into the adjacent private study and closed the door.

"What is it, Marcus?"

Vance pulled up a security log on the tablet. "When Marco stripped Thomas Vane of his personal belongings yesterday and threw him off the estate, Vane didn't leave the area. He went straight to a hotel in downtown Newark."

Alessandro’s eyes grew dark. "Go on."

"Vane knew he was ruined," Vance explained. "He knew you were going to audit his books and discover that he had been embezzling funds from the domestic payroll. In his panic, he contacted an intermediary representing Don Sal Fiore."

Alessandro’s jaw tightened. Sal Fiore was the undisputed head of the Brooklyn crime syndicate—a ruthless, aging mobster who had been looking for a crack in the Moretti family's defenses for over a decade.

"What did Vane tell Fiore?" Alessandro demanded.

"Vane sold him security access codes to the eastern gate," Vance said grimly. "And worse... Vane told Fiore that you brought a secret woman and a child into the main house. Vane didn't know who Sophia really was, but he pitched it to Fiore as a high-value leverage target—a way to force you into surrendering the port shipping rights."

Alessandro walked over to his wall safe, punched in a five-digit code, and opened the heavy steel door. Inside sat two custom nickel-plated handguns alongside stacks of bearer bonds and emergency travel documents.

"Fiore thinks he's dealing with a weakened man," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a chilling, absolute stillness. "He thinks he can use my household against me."

"My security network indicates that Fiore has dispatched a strike team," Vance warned. "Three SUVs left his Brooklyn compound twenty minutes ago. They are heading toward the estate right now. They intend to breach the eastern rose garden gate using Vane's codes before nightfall."

Alessandro pulled a sleek tactical radio from his desk drawer and clicked the channel knob.

"Marco," Alessandro commanded into the radio.

"I'm here, Boss," Marco replied instantly.

"Lock down the perimeter. Move Sophia and Emma to the underground panic room beneath the wine cellar immediately. Activate the automated steel shutters on all ground-floor windows."

"Understood, Boss. What about the incoming guests?"

Alessandro loaded a heavy magazine into his firearm with a crisp, lethal click.

"They came to take my family," Alessandro said, his eyes burning with an ancient, terrifying fire. "Show them what happens when you step into the Wolf's den."
