Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Family Wing

The family wing was entirely different from the staff quarters on the ground floor. It was spacious, warm, and filled with sunlight that poured through tall arched windows overlooking the private gardens. The rooms were decorated in soft creams and blues, featuring a plush bedroom for Sophia and a cheerful, colorfully painted room for Emma, complete with a toy chest and a small wooden easel.

For the next two months, life in the Mancini-Moretti estate settled into a strange, almost peaceful rhythm.

Emma flourished. She had her own playroom, rode a small tricycle down the long carpeted hallways, and treated Lorenzo with a fearless, baffling affection that constantly disarmed him. Whenever Lorenzo walked through the halls, Emma would run up to him, grab his pant leg, and demand that he inspect her latest drawing or listen to a story about her stuffed rabbit.

To the absolute shock of the security guards, Lorenzo would actually stop, kneel down, and look at the drawing with complete seriousness, nodding along as if he were reviewing a multi-million-dollar land acquisition.

Sophia watched all of this from a distance, feeling a strange warmth bloom in her chest that she hadn't felt since before her marriage fell apart.

She and Lorenzo developed a quiet, unspoken understanding. They shared dinner in the private dining room several evenings a week, discussing Emma’s progress, books, and occasionally the weather. Lorenzo never mentioned her past again, and Sophia never asked about the photographs in the secret room.

Yet, beneath the surface of this domestic calm, dark waters were stirring.

One evening in late January, while Emma was fast asleep in her room, Sophia went down to the main kitchen to get a glass of water. The house was quiet, lit only by the amber glow of wall sconces.

As she passed the open door of the east wing library, she noticed a faint strip of light spilling out from beneath the revolving bookcase.

She stopped. The secret room was open.

Normally, Lorenzo kept the mechanism locked tight when he wasn't using it. But tonight, the heavy oak bookcase was jarred open by about three inches.

Curiosity—and a nagging, cold intuition that something was wrong—got the better of her. Sophia stepped into the library and pushed the bookcase gently. It swung open silently.

She stepped into the secret room.

The room was empty. Lorenzo wasn't there. But the desk was covered in open files, photographs, and computer printouts that hadn't been there before.

Sophia stepped closer to the desk, her eyes scanning the papers.

Her breath caught in her throat.

It wasn't a dossier on her anymore. It was a dossier on Marcus, the security chief.

Spread across the mahogany surface were bank statements showing hundreds of thousands of dollars flowing from offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands into a private account registered in Marcus’s mother’s maiden name. Next to the bank records were surveillance photos of Marcus meeting in a dimly lit parking garage with a man wearing the insignia of the Rossi family—Lorenzo’s fiercest rivals.

And right in the center of the desk was a printed email with the subject line: RE: Elimination of the Target.

Sophia’s blood turned to ice water.

Marcus wasn't just a loyal security chief. He was a mole. He had been leaking Lorenzo’s security routes, financial movements, and warehouse locations to the Rossi family for months.

And then, her eyes landed on the final document at the bottom of the stack.

It was a police accident report from three years ago.

The report on Isabella Moretti’s fatal car crash.

Highlighted in yellow marker was a single paragraph detailing how the brake lines of Isabella’s SUV had been cleanly severed with a hydraulic cutter before she left the estate.

And written in the margin, in Lorenzo’s handwriting, were the words: Marcus signed off on vehicle maintenance that afternoon.

The betrayal wasn't old history. It was active. And it was happening right inside the house.

A floorboard creaked behind her.

Sophia spun around.

Standing in the doorway of the secret room, bathed in the dim shadows of the hallway, was Marcus.

His face was a mask of cold, dead calm. In his right hand, half-hidden behind his thigh, he held a silenced pistol.

“Well, well, well,” Marcus said, his voice a smooth, deadly purr. “Curiosity really is a fatal flaw in this house, Miss Carter.”
