Chapter 1 - The Crescent Mark

Elena stared at the dusting of limestone grit near the threshold of the open service door. The split across the rubber heel was unmistakable—a crescent-shaped tear where the outer sole had separated from the leather upper. She had seen that exact mark every morning at six o'clock on the worn work boots of Matteo, the villa’s chief groundskeeper. He was the only person with unmonitored access to the drainage Tunnels running beneath the estate’s perimeter, and the only man who knew which security cameras experienced a five-second power reset during the automated morning diagnostic.

"Marco," Elena said, her voice dropping to a sharp whisper. "It’s Matteo. He’s taking her through the old wine cellar conduits."

Marco’s eyes narrowed, his hands moving with practiced efficiency as he unclipped his sidearm and signaled two guards at the end of the hall. "The cellar connects directly to the north woods outside the secondary wall. If he reaches the road, we lose him."

Without waiting for the security team, Elena sprinted past the open door and down the narrow spiral stairs leading into the substructure of Villa De Santis. The air grew instantly cold, damp with the smell of old stone and subterranean runoff. Behind her, the heavy tread of Nero’s paws echoed against the concrete. The giant, scarred Belgian Malinois—a dog feared by every soldier in Luca’s syndicate for his fierce aggression—was keeping pace beside her, his breath coming in low, steady huffs. He didn't bark; he moved like a shadow intent on a single target.

Elena pushed through a rusted iron grate into the dark conduit. Ahead, the dim flicker of a flashlight cut through the gloom, accompanied by the distinct sound of a child’s soft murmur.

"Look, Mr. Matt," Lily’s innocent voice echoed off the wet brick. "Nero's water bowl was dirty, so I used the big hose!"

"Hush, little girl," Matteo’s strained voice came back. "We have to go meet your daddy’s friends."

"Nero!" Elena shouted into the dark. "Find her!"

The massive dog surged past Elena like a dark bullet, his nails clicking fiercely against the damp floor.
