Chapter 6 - The Ironworks Strike

The freezing autumn rain fell in heavy, driving sheets across the industrial wasteland of north Briarport, drumming a rhythmic, metallic cadence against the rusted corrugated roofs of the abandoned ironworks factory.

At exactly two-fifteen in the morning, the world exploded into absolute, coordinated chaos.

Silas Kross’s sniper teams, positioned on the roofs of the adjacent grain silos, fired three simultaneous, suppressed rounds from their high-powered rifles. High above the industrial complex, the main communication dishes and the heavy transformers providing power to the Hart safehouse shattered in a spray of sparks and broken glass.

Instantly, the entire ironworks factory was plunged into absolute, pitch darkness.

Before the guards could even realize their radios were dead, three massive, black armored tactical vehicles crashed through the heavy chain-link northern perimeter fences, their reinforced steel cattle-guards tearing through wire and concrete posts like wet paper.

CRASH!

Out of the vehicles poured forty elite Calder assault operatives, their night-vision goggles glowing an eerie, bright green in the dark rain as they moved in perfect, lethal sync.

“Breach the main bay doors! Now!” Marcus Vance roared through his tactical headset, firing a rapid burst from his automatic weapon to neutralize two Hart enforcers who were trying to scramble toward a mounted machine gun near the main entrance.

A heavy, explosive breaching charge detonated against the industrial steel roller doors of the main warehouse structure, blowing the metal panels inward in a blinding flash of orange fire and white smoke.

BOOM!

Roman Calder was the first man through the smoking breach. He moved with a terrifying, calculated grace, his suppressed automatic rifle raised to his shoulder as his night-vision display highlighted three targets running down the central concrete gantry above the factory floor.

He pulled the trigger three times in rapid succession.

THWIP! THWIP! THWIP!

The three Hart soldiers tumbled over the rusted iron railings, crashing heavily into the machinery below.

“Secure the weapons cache! Dominic, initiate the financial freeze!” Roman commanded through his radio, his baritone voice steady and calm despite the deafening roar of gunfire echoing off the metal walls.

The warehouse interior had transformed into a ferocious, close-quarters battlefield. Hart syndicate soldiers, caught completely off-guard in their undershirts and tactical gear, fought with the desperate, chaotic ferocity of cornered rats. Muzzle flashes illuminated the smoky dark spaces in jagged, blinding bursts, casting long, monstrous shadows across the rusted iron vats and heavy machinery.

Roman moved through the crossfire like a ghost born of the storm. He fired with absolute, clinical precision, neutralizing every threat that entered his perimeter while his tactical squads systematically cleared the lower offices and secured the containers containing Martin Hart’s illegal arsenal.

Suddenly, a heavy, unsuppressed shotgun blast ripped through the air from the direction of the rear administrative offices, the lead pellets peppering the steel pillar right beside Roman’s head, throwing a shower of bright sparks into his face.

BLAM!

Roman dropped into a low crouch behind a stack of wooden crates, his eyes tracking the source of the fire through his night-vision lens.

Standing in the doorway of the elevated manager’s office was Martin Hart himself. The old crime lord was dressed in a crumpled wool coat, his hair wild, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unhinged psychotic fury. He was holding a smoking twelve-gauge shotgun in his hands, his fingers frantically racking a fresh shell into the chamber.

“CALDER!” Martin screamed hysterically over the roar of the alarm sirens. “You think you can destroy my family?! You think you can take my docks over a dirty housemaid?! I’ll drag your soul down to hell with me first!”

He raised the shotgun again, aiming directly toward the crates where Roman was taking cover.

Before he could pull the trigger, a dark silhouette launched itself out from the shadows of the upper gantry. Silas Kross dropped onto Martin from above, his tactical knife flashing once in the dim light as he struck the old man’s shoulder, sending the shotgun flying out of his grip and clattering down to the lower floor.

Martin let out an agonized shriek, stumbling backward into the office as Silas pinned him against the desk, securing his hands behind his back with reinforced plastic ties in a matter of seconds.

“Target secured, boss,” Silas’s calm, emotionless voice came through Roman’s headset. “The old wolf is caged.”

Roman stood up slowly, lowering his rifle as the remaining gunfire inside the factory rapidly died down into a scattering of isolated surrenders. The Calder tactical teams had completely overwhelmed the facility in less than twenty minutes. Over forty Hart soldiers lay disarmed and zip-tied on the concrete floor, while Marcus’s team was already loading the captured cash reserves and weapons manifests into the armored trucks.

Roman walked slowly up the iron stairs toward the elevated office, his heavy boots echoing with a chilling finality.

He stepped into the small, messy room. Martin Hart was slumped against the desk, bleeding from the shallow knife wound in his shoulder, his breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps as he stared up at the towering figure of the young Calder kingpin.

“It’s over, Martin,” Roman said, his voice dropping into a quiet, icy baritone that carried more weight than any explosion. “Your soldiers have surrendered. Your weapons cache has been seized. And three minutes ago, Dominic Rossi finalized the legal foreclosure of every real estate holding, shell corporation, and bank account bearing the Hart name across the East Coast. Your family is completely bankrupt. You have no empire left to fight for.”

Martin stared at him, his face turning an ugly shade of gray as the absolute, crushing reality of his total defeat settled into his mind. “You... you ruined a thirty-year dynasty... in a single night... over a maid...” the old man whispered brokenly, a tear of pure, bitter rage escaping his eye.

“I didn't ruin you over a maid, Martin,” Roman said softly, stepping closer and looking down at the defeated mob boss with an absolute, terrifying disdain. “I ruined you because you allowed your blood to bring cruelty and fear into my sanctuary. I ruined you because you forgot that a Calder protects his own people with everything he possesses. You are a relic of a past that relied on terror, Martin. But terror ends tonight.”

He turned his back on the old man, looking at Silas. “Deliver Martin Hart to the federal authorities along with Frankie Torrio’s files. Let the state spend the next twenty years picking through the bones of his empire.”

He walked back out onto the iron gantry, looking down at the massive, secure facility that now belonged entirely to him. He pulled off his tactical helmet, letting the cool, damp rain from the broken skylight fall across his face, his chest expanding as he drew in a deep, clean breath.

The war was won. The Hart syndicate was completely erased from the map.

And as Roman looked at his watch, seeing that the first pale lines of the morning dawn were beginning to bleed through the gray clouds over Briarport, his thoughts turned instantly away from the blood-stained concrete of the factory, flying back toward the quiet, sun-drenched sanctuary of the East Wing where a young mother was waiting for him to come home.
