Chapter 7 - THE RECOVERY

Two weeks after the battle at the Marlowe estate, a profound quiet returned to the grand house.
The Moretti crime family was entirely dismantled, its high-ranking members arrested or scattered across the country following the collapse of their leadership. Tyler Kane’s betrayal was fully documented, and Arthur Vance was handed over to federal authorities along with overwhelming evidence of his medical fraud, completely clearing Nora Bennett’s name in the eyes of the State Medical Board.
The physical repairs to the mansion were nearly complete, but the emotional transformation of its occupants was permanent.
In the sunlit second-floor medical suite, Vincent sat on the edge of an examination table, his shirt off, revealing heavy white bandages wrapped snugly around his left ribs.
Nora stood between his knees, carefully unwrapping the gauze to inspect the neat surgical sutures beneath. Her hands were gentle, skilled, and warm against his skin.
“The wound is healing cleanly,” Nora said softly, applying a fresh coat of antibiotic ointment. “No sign of infection. You’ll be back to full strength in another week.”
Vincent didn't look at his wound. He looked at her.
He reached up, his large, calloused hand gently taking her wrist, stopping her movement.
“Nora,” Vincent said quietly.
She looked up, her brown eyes meeting his. “Yes?”
“Yesterday, I received a letter from the Illinois State Department of Professional Regulation,” Vincent said, pulling a folded piece of paper from the nearby tray with his free hand. “With Vance’s confession and the evidence provided by my legal team, your nursing license has been fully reinstated. Effective immediately.”
Nora froze. Her hand trembled against his chest. She took the letter, her eyes scanning the official seal, the signature of the board director, and the words: Full Reinstatement of Registered Nurse License.
Tears filled her eyes, blurring the printed text. “My... my license...”
“You are clear, Nora,” Vincent whispered, stepping off the table, standing close to her, towering over her with overwhelming gentleness. “Your reputation is restored. You can apply to any hospital in the country. You can go back to St. Catherine’s as a head trauma supervisor tomorrow.”
Nora stared at the paper, then looked up at him. “And what about my father?”
“Ray is doing remarkably well in Des Moines,” Vincent smiled faintly. “He’s been sober for thirty days, working at the body shop, and he calls Samuel every Tuesday to ask how you’re doing. He is safe. His debts are officially erased.”
Nora felt a deep, overwhelming wave of emotion wash through her chest. Every burden she had carried for three agonizing years—the shame, the fear, the debt, the loss of her identity—had been lifted away by the man standing in front of her.
“You did all of this for me?” she asked, her voice cracking.
“I did it because you deserve everything that was stolen from you,” Vincent said softly. He reached out, gently lifting her jaw with his fingers so she was forced to look into his eyes. “You are free now, Nora. Truly free. You don't owe me anything. You never did.”
Nora looked at the letter in her hand. Then she looked at the state-of-the-art medical bay they had built together. Then she looked at Vincent Marlowe—the man who had protected her father, defended her honor, built her a haven, and shed tears when he thought he had lost her.
Slowly, deliberately, Nora folded the official letter in half and set it down on the tray.
“I don't want to go back to St. Catherine’s,” Nora said, her voice steady and clear.
Vincent frowned slightly, confused. “Nora... it’s your dream. You worked your whole life to be a trauma nurse.”
“I am a trauma nurse,” Nora replied, stepping closer, resting her soft hands against his broad, muscular chest. “Right here. This is my hospital now. And these are the people I choose to take care of.”
Vincent’s dark eyes flared with an intense, breathless wonder. “Nora... are you sure?”
“I have never been more sure of anything in my life, Vincent,” she whispered.
Vincent didn't wait another second. He wrapped his powerful arms around her waist, lifting her slightly off her feet as he pulled her mouth up to his.
The kiss was deep, passionate, and filled with three months of unspoken desire, fierce protection, and absolute devotion. Nora wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her fingers in his dark hair, giving herself over completely to the warmth of his embrace.
When they finally separated, both of them were breathless, their foreheads resting against each other in the quiet, sunlit room.

“I love you, Nora,” Vincent rasped into her skin.
“I love you too, Vincent,” she whispered back.
