Chapter 3: The Empire Behind the Smile

The ambulance lights painted the hotel windows red and blue as they carried me away.
For the first time in years…
I left Rosemere Grand without pretending to be someone else.
No fake name.
No lowered eyes.
No uniform.
No fear.
Just Mara Vale.
The paramedic beside me checked the monitor.
“Thirty-four weeks,” she said. “You’ve been under a lot of stress.”
I stared at the ceiling of the ambulance.
“That’s an understatement.”
She looked at me.
“You know, most people in your situation would have collapsed emotionally before physically.”
I almost laughed.
“Most people didn’t spend three years planning a war.”
She didn't ask questions.
Smart woman.
Because she saw something in my eyes.
This wasn't a woman running from a disaster.
This was a woman walking through the final stage of one.
At St. Catherine’s Medical Center, the doctors moved quickly.
The moment the ultrasound screen appeared, I finally let myself breathe.
A tiny heartbeat.
Strong.
Steady.
My baby was okay.
The doctor removed his gloves.
“Your daughter is fine, Ms. Vale.”
I smiled weakly.
“My daughter?”
He nodded.
“Looks like you were right. She’s stubborn.”
I touched my stomach.
“She gets that from me.”
For a moment, everything became quiet.
Not the hotel.
Not Sylvia.
Not the takeover.
Just me and my child.
Then my phone rang.
Rebecca.
I answered immediately.
“Tell me.”
Her voice was calm.
“That was a bold entrance.”
I smiled.
“Was it enough?”
A pause.
Then:
“She panicked.”
Good.
“Give me the damage report.”
Rebecca became serious.
“The board meeting is scheduled for tomorrow morning. The media already knows something happened.”
“And Sylvia?”
“Still in the hotel.”
“Good.”
Rebecca paused.
“Mara.”
“Yes?”
“There’s something you need to see.”
She sent a file.
One photo.
A document.
My blood went cold.
The signature.
Mine.
Or something that looked like mine.
“What is this?”
Rebecca answered quietly.
“The reason Sylvia was able to take control so easily.”
I sat up.
The nurse looked over.
I waved her off.
“What are you saying?”
“Mara, this wasn't just Sylvia.”
Silence.
“Someone helped her.”
The room suddenly felt colder.
Because I knew Sylvia.
I knew her greed.
Her jealousy.
Her cruelty.
But she was never smart enough to build something this complicated.
“Who?”
Rebecca hesitated.
Then said:
“Your brother.”
Everything stopped.
“No.”
The word came automatically.
Because some betrayals are too painful for your brain to accept.
“Daniel?”
“Yes.”
I closed my eyes.
Daniel.
My younger brother.
The person who held my hand after our father died.
The person who promised:
“I'll protect you.”
Rebecca continued.
“We found communications between him and Sylvia.”
I didn't speak.
“He helped move the assets.”
“He provided internal documents.”
“He knew exactly when you would disappear.”
My heart hurt.
Not from the pregnancy.
From something deeper.
“How long?”
Rebecca went quiet.
“Almost from the beginning.”
Three years.
Three years of believing one enemy existed.
And now I learned there had been another.
Inside my own family.
I remembered Daniel at the hospital.
His fake sympathy.
His words.
“She ruined you, Mara.”
He was right.
Just not about who.
The door opened.
My best friend, Olivia, walked in.
Her eyes were red.
“Mara.”
I looked at her.
And she stopped.
Because she saw the change.
The realization.
“What happened?”
I handed her the phone.
She read the message.
Her face fell.
“No.”
I watched her reaction.
Too quickly.
Too strongly.
And suddenly another thought appeared.
A terrible thought.
“Olivia.”
She looked up.
“Yes?”
“Did you know?”
The question destroyed the room.
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
And that was answer enough.
I slowly sat back.
The person who betrayed me.
The person who helped destroy me.
The person who took everything from me.
Was not one person.
It was everyone I trusted.
Olivia started crying.
“Mara, please.”
I looked at her.
“Please what?”
“I was trying to protect you.”
I almost laughed.
Everyone said that.
Everyone who hurt you always claimed they were protecting you.
“By lying?”
“No.”
“By helping Sylvia?”
Her face collapsed.
The silence told the truth.
“Why?”
My voice cracked.
Not angry.
Just tired.
Olivia wiped her tears.
“Because Daniel convinced me.”
“Convinced you of what?”
She whispered:
“That you were going to destroy us.”
I stared.
“What?”
“He told me you were planning to sell the company.”
“That’s insane.”
“I know.”
She looked broken.
“But I believed him.”
And there it was.
The real weapon.
Not money.
Not power.
Trust.
Daniel didn't need to beat me.
He only needed to make everyone around me doubt me.
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
You finally found the first betrayal.
My fingers froze.
Rebecca saw my face.
“What is it?”
I showed her.
A second message appeared.
Now find the reason I let you live.
The room went silent.
Because Sylvia wanted my company.
Daniel wanted my assets.
But someone else…
Someone bigger…
Had been watching.
Waiting.
Rebecca whispered:
“Mara…”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She pointed at the sender information.
A name appeared.
Alexander Vale.
May you like
My father.
The man who had died five years ago.
