Chapter 6 - The Custody Siege

The arrest of Thomas Miller triggered an explosive domino effect that swept through Boston’s high society like a wildfire.

Within forty-eight hours, federal agents executed search warrants at the downtown headquarters of Vanguard Care. They seized hard drives, encrypted server logs, and financial records detailing eight years of systematic blackmail, forged medical reports, and corporate manipulation funded by Victoria Sterling’s private accounts.

However, Victoria Sterling was not a woman who surrendered easily.

On Monday morning, four days after Miller’s arrest, three luxury black sedans pulled up to the curb outside the Morrison estate.

A legal team of six high-powered attorneys in tailored dark suits stepped out, led by Victoria Sterling herself.

At sixty-four, Victoria looked like a queen from a forgotten empire. Her snow-white hair was styled into an flawless chignon, her tailored grey wool suit exuded immense wealth, and her face was an unyielding mask of aristocratic arrogance.

Beside her walked two uniformed officers from the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, holding an official blue folder.

James opened the front door before they reached the top of the steps. He stood in the entryway, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, his posture tall and completely immovable.

Martha stood two steps behind him, her arms folded quietly across her chest.

"Get off my porch, Victoria," James said, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet Brookline neighborhood.

Victoria stopped at the top of the stone steps. Her cold blue eyes swept over James with supreme contempt before settling on Martha.

"I see you are still keeping the lower-class staff in your personal quarters, James," Victoria said, her tone dripping with venom. "How vulgar. Just as my poor Catherine feared, you have turned this estate into a circus the moment she was no longer here to give you social standing."

"Catherine loved this house," James said coldly. "And she despised your cruelty every single day of her life."

Victoria’s jaw tightened, a flash of genuine rage cracking through her polished exterior. She gestured to the senior official from the Department of Children and Families standing beside her.

"This is Director Vance from DCF," Victoria declared loudly. "I have filed an emergency ex-parte petition for immediate physical custody of my grandchildren. We have twenty-four sworn statements regarding the chaotic environment in this house, along with proof that you are currently harboring an unlicensed, unvetted former nurse who was dismissed from Mass General following a medical tragedy."

Director Vance stepped forward, looking visibly uncomfortable. "Mr. Morrison, we have a court directive to inspect the premises and evaluate the children’s immediate safety. Given the severe allegations of psychological distress—"

"The allegations were manufactured by the woman standing next to you," James interrupted, pulling a thick stack of certified legal documents from his jacket pocket and handing them directly to the DCF Director.

Director Vance blinked, opening the folder.

"Those are the confession statements from Thomas Miller, the chief manager of Vanguard Care," James explained calmly. "Along with the bank records showing one hundred and fifty thousand dollars in direct wire transfers from Victoria Sterling’s personal offshore account to Mr. Miller’s private line. They include forensic audio evidence of the high-frequency electronic devices your mother-in-law had planted in my sons' playroom to induce panic attacks."

Director Vance’s eyes widened as he scanned the certified police records and federal affidavits. He looked at Victoria Sterling, his expression shifting from bureaucratic detachment to profound disgust.

"Mrs. Sterling," Director Vance said, his voice dropping an octave. "Are these records accurate?"

Victoria didn't flinch. "Those are fabricated lies created by James’s expensive lawyers to cover up his own paternal failures!"

"They aren't lies, Victoria," Martha spoke up, stepping forward until she stood directly beside James on the porch.

Victoria glared at Martha as if looking at a stain on the rug. "Silence yourself, girl! You are a disgraced maid who has no standing in this court!"

"I am the senior pediatric trauma specialist who took care of David, Daniel, and Desmond while your hired criminals were torturing them," Martha said, her voice completely calm, holding a absolute power that made Victoria’s sharp tone sound weak and shrill. "And I have maintained daily, hour-by-hour medical logs of all three boys for the past four weeks. Their heart rates, cognitive development, sleep cycles, and emotional stability have improved by four hundred percent since your agency was thrown out of this house."

Martha stepped down one stair, looking straight into Victoria’s cold eyes.

"You don't love those boys, Mrs. Sterling," Martha said softly. "You never even visited them on their birthday last month. You only love the control that Catherine’s trust fund gives you over this family. But you will never touch those children again. Not while I am breathing."

Victoria raised her hand as if to slap Martha’s face, but James caught her wrist in mid-air. His grip was firm, unyielding, and iron-hard.

"If you ever raise your hand toward anyone on my property again, Victoria," James whispered, "I will have the officers standing behind you put you in handcuffs right now for felony assault."

He released her wrist with a sharp flick.

Director Vance closed the blue folder in his hands. He looked at the two uniformed officers standing behind him.

"Mrs. Sterling," Director Vance said coldly. "The emergency petition is denied. Furthermore, based on the evidence presented in these police affidavits, I am issuing an immediate temporary restraining order barring you from coming within one thousand feet of Daniel, David, and Desmond Morrison pending a full judicial hearing."

Victoria stood frozen on the steps, her pale face flushed with red humiliation. Her six high-priced lawyers looked at each other, quietly stepping back down the stairs, realizing that the case was completely lost.

"This isn't over, James!" Victoria hissed, her voice trembling with hatred as she backed toward her limousine. "I will spend every penny I have to crush you!"

"You can try, Victoria," James said as he took Martha’s hand into his own, locking his fingers firmly with hers in front of the assembled lawyers and state officials. "But you are fighting a father who has finally woken up. And you will lose."
