Chapter 4 - THE HUNT FOR HELEN

By Monday afternoon, the quiet Lake Geneva estate had been transformed into an active federal crime scene command post.
Black SUVs belonging to the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division and Child Exploitation Unit lined the long gravel driveway. Federal agents moved through the house with portable scanners, seizing financial records, laptops, and the contents of Margaret’s local safe deposit boxes.
Margaret and Ethan had been taken into custody at eight o'clock that morning. The news of the Whitmore family scandal had hit the financial wires like a tidal wave: Prominent Real Estate Dynasty Matriarch Arrested in Multi-State Trust Fraud and Child Conspiracy Scheme.
Daniel sat in the library. The room was warm, a fire crackling in the brick fireplace.
Ivy and Skye were sitting on a plush rug in front of the hearth. They were dressed in soft, new fleece pajamas that Daniel had ordered delivered from town. They were playing with a pair of stuffed bears, their small laughter ringing through the room—a sound that made Daniel’s chest ache with a bittersweet joy.
Special Agent Sarah Vance, a sharp-eyed investigator with the FBI’s regional task force, sat across from Daniel, a tablet open on her lap.
"The forensic audit on your mother's accounts is already revealing a massive paper trail, Mr. Whitmore," Agent Vance said, her voice professional and calm. "Ethan had set up three shell corporations in Delaware. Over the last two years, they drained roughly 1.8 million dollars from your late wife’s estate trust, masking it as 'consulting fees'."
"I don't care about the money," Daniel said, his eyes never leaving his daughters. "Where is Helen?"
Agent Vance tapped her tablet screen. "We traced the black vehicle that dropped the girls off near your property on Friday. It was a local private taxi hired from a bus depot in Rockford, Illinois. The driver confirmed he picked up a woman fitting Helen’s description—Helen Morales, age twenty-nine."
Daniel leaned forward. "Did she say where she was going?"
"The driver dropped her back off at the Rockford station," Agent Vance said. "We tracked her cell phone pings. Her phone went dead six hours ago near a small motel outside Beloit, Wisconsin. We believe she’s terrified, Mr. Whitmore. She thinks Ethan’s associates are hunting her, and she doesn't know that Margaret and Ethan are currently sitting in a federal holding cell without bail."
Daniel stood up immediately. "I'm going to Beloit."
"Mr. Whitmore, let our field agents handle it—"
"She raised my daughters for three years," Daniel interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. "She protected them. She kept Claire’s medallion safe. She drove here in terror just to give them a chance at a real life. She thinks I am a monster because my brother lied to her. I need to be the one to tell her the truth."
Agent Vance looked at him for a long moment, then slowly stood up. "I'll assign two plainclothes agents to escort you. If she’s at that motel, we do this quietly. No trauma for the girls."
Two hours later, Daniel’s sedan pulled into the parking lot of the Sunset Pines Motel on the outskirts of Beloit. It was a bleak, single-story structure with peeling yellow paint and a flickering neon sign. Rain had begun to fall, a cold, steady drizzle that turned the asphalt into a dark mirror.
Agent Vance stayed in a discreet black SUV at the edge of the lot while Daniel, accompanied by a single plainclothes officer, walked down the concrete walkway to Room 114.
Daniel took a deep breath, stepping up to the door. He knocked softly.
"Helen?" he called out through the thin wood. "Helen Morales?"
Silence.
Then, the faint sound of quick, terrified footsteps inside, followed by the rustle of a heavy chain latch being engaged.
"Go away!" a woman’s voice sobbed from inside. She sounded terrified, exhausted, on the brink of collapse. "I don't have the girls! They're safe! Leave me alone, Ethan! I won't say anything! Just leave me alone!"
Daniel felt a profound sorrow wash over him. He pressed his hand flat against the cold door.
"Helen," Daniel said, his voice calm, clear, and filled with deep emotion. "Ethan isn't here. Ethan and Margaret were arrested by the FBI this morning. They are in prison."
The sobbing inside the room paused.
"My name is Daniel Whitmore," he continued softly. "I am Claire’s husband. I am Ivy and Skye’s father."
A long silence followed. Then, the sound of the metal chain sliding across the track.
The door opened three inches.
Through the gap, a young woman looked out at him. She was thin, her dark hair pulled back into a messy knot, her eyes swollen and red from days of crying. She was wearing an oversized denim jacket and held a heavy brass lamp standard like a weapon.
She looked at Daniel’s face—at the distinct features she had undoubtedly seen in photographs Claire had shared with her years ago.
"You..." Helen whispered, her breath hitching. "You're... Daniel?"
"Yes," Daniel said gently. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out the silver teardrop medallion, and held it up in the palm of his hand. "I have the medallion, Helen. Ivy kept it safe in the bread. They are warm, they are fed, and they are safe at the lake house."
Helen stared at the medallion. The brass lamp slipped from her fingers, clattering loudly onto the carpeted floor. She buried her face in her hands and sank to her knees right in the doorway, her shoulders shaking violently as tears poured down her face.
Daniel immediately knelt down beside her, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"They told me you were terrible..." Helen sobbed, her voice raw. "Ethan came to my house... he showed me fake court papers... he said you would take the babies and put them in a state ward because you hated Claire... he said if I ever came near you, he'd have me arrested for kidnapping..."
"I know," Daniel whispered. "I know what they did to you, Helen. It was all lies. They were stealing from Claire, and they were stealing from my daughters."
Helen looked up, her eyes desperate. "I ran out of money three months ago... I took a job cleaning houses, but it wasn't enough... I couldn't buy them shoes, Daniel... I couldn't feed them proper meat... I knew if I kept them with me, they would freeze this winter... so I took them to the house Claire always talked about..."
"You saved them," Daniel said, tears welling in his own eyes. "You gave me my daughters back. You gave me Claire’s final gift."
May you like
He extended a hand to her.
"Come home, Helen," Daniel said softly. "Ivy and Skye are waiting for you."
