Chapter 3 - Safe Harbor

The VIP suite on the eighth floor didn't look like a hospital room. It looked like a penthouse suite in a five-star hotel, complete with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Phoenix skyline, soft leather recliners, and a warm mahogany desk in the corner. But right in the center sat the state-of-the-art fetal monitoring equipment.

Dr. Chen applied the cool gel to my swollen belly, moving the transducer gently across my skin.

The quiet of the room was suddenly filled with a fast, rhythmic sound.

Thump-thump-thump-thump-thump.

The sound of my baby’s heart. Strong. Steady. Vibrant.

I closed my eyes, and the first real tear leaked out from beneath my lashes, tracing a warm path down my cheek.

“Heart rate is 145 beats per minute,” Dr. Chen announced with a warm smile, showing me the monitor screen. “No signs of placental abruption. No fluid leaks. Her movement is strong. The kick hit your lower ribs, Tessa, but your thick cardigan and the angle took most of the impact. You’ll have a bruise, but your baby girl is entirely safe.”

Arthur let out a ragged sigh from the corner of the room, leaning his hands against the edge of the bed. “Thank God.”

“She’s a fighter,” I whispered, looking at the black-and-white image of my daughter’s face on the screen. She had her hand tucked up near her mouth, blissfully unaware of the storm that had just raged outside.

“She’s a Sterling,” Arthur corrected gently, wiping the tear from my cheek with his thumb. “She comes from strong stock.”

Dr. Chen finished the scan, cleaned the gel from my stomach, and pulled the soft blanket back over me. “I’m going to order a mild sedative to help you rest, Tessa, and keep you overnight for observation just to be absolute certain there are no delayed contractions. Director Sterling, the D.A.’s office is on line two in your office.”

Arthur nodded. “I’ll take it. Elizabeth, ensure no one enters this floor without my direct clearance. Not Bennett Finch, not his family, not his lawyers.”

“Understood, Director.”

Once Dr. Chen left the room, Arthur pulled a chair close to my bed and sat down. The terrifying CEO was gone; now he was just the uncle who used to take me fishing on Lake Superior when I was a little girl.

“Why didn't you call me, Tessa?” he asked softly. “When he froze your cards three days ago… why did you go to Target to buy clothes? Why did you let him strip you of your dignity?”

I looked down at my hands. “Because three years ago, when I married Bennett, you told me he was a narcissist who only wanted me for the Sterling connections he suspected I had. I wanted so badly to prove you wrong, Uncle Arthur. I wanted to believe he loved me for me—the quiet girl who ran an education non-profit, not the heiress to the Sterling Medical Trust.”

I swallowed the bitterness in my throat.

“When I used my mother’s maiden name, Halloway, Bennett thought I was just a middle-class orphan with a modest inheritance. And as long as I served his image—playing the dutiful, quiet wife—he was happy. But when I got pregnant, and when I refused to sign over my non-profit’s intellectual property to his foundation, he changed. He realized he couldn't control me entirely.”

“He tried to break you so you would settle quietly in the divorce,” Arthur said, his eyes darkening. “He thought you had no safety net.”

“He thought I had no one,” I corrected. “Because I was too proud to call you.”

Arthur took my hand in both of his. “Pride is a Sterling trait too, Tessa. Your mother had it. You have it. But family isn't about pride; it’s about blood. You never have to hide from me again.”

Before I could reply, the heavy wooden door of the suite opened, and a tall, sharp-looking woman in a charcoal power suit walked in. She carried a sleek leather briefcase and walked with the precise, deadly confidence of a top-tier corporate litigator.

“Tessa,” Arthur said, gesturing to the woman. “This is Victoria Vance. No relation to Bennett’s mistress, I assure you. Victoria is the senior managing partner at Sterling & Vance Legal. She’s taking over your divorce and the criminal charges.”

Victoria offered me a warm, professional smile as she opened her briefcase. “Mrs. Finch—or rather, Ms. Halloway—it’s a pleasure. I’ve already taken the liberty of filing four emergency motions with the Family Court.”

I blinked. “Four?”

“First,” Victoria said, pulling out a sheaf of papers. “A temporary restraining order against Bennett Finch and Margot Vance, effective immediately. Second, a motion to unfreeze all of your personal accounts, with an added freeze on Mr. Finch’s liquid assets pending an emergency forensic audit.”

She paused, a sharp, icy smile touching her lips.

“Third, a motion for full legal and physical custody of your unborn child, citing physical endangerment and domestic negligence. And fourth… a corporate petition to void the transfer of your non-profit to the Finch Foundation, based on fraud and coercion.”

I sat up a little higher in bed. “Can you actually do all of that so quickly?”

“Ms. Halloway,” Victoria said smoothly, “when Arthur Sterling calls the Chief Judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court, things move very quickly. Bennett Finch thought he was playing chess against an opponent with no pieces. He didn't realize you had the entire board.”
