The days following Margaret’s departure were a blur of recovery. Emily’s physical wounds began to heal, but the psychological scars were deeper. She spent hours staring at the nursery door, afraid to go in, afraid that the ghosts of Margaret’s cruelty were still lingering in the air.
Daniel, driven by a need for justice and understanding, returned to the nursery one evening. He had installed a security camera months ago, a device meant to allow them to check on Noah from their phones during the night. He had avoided looking at the footage, terrified of what he might see, but he knew he couldn't hide from the truth any longer.
He sat at his desk, his laptop open, and began to scroll through the days. The first few were unremarkable—normal feedings, quiet nights. But as he went back further, the truth unraveled. He saw Margaret whispering into Emily’s ear while she was changing Noah, her tone sharp and demeaning. He saw her snatching the baby away when Emily reached out to comfort him. He saw her forcing Emily to scrub the floors while her stitches were still painful, mocking her fatigue, calling her a "burden" and a "failure."
The most devastating moment came on a Tuesday. Noah was crying—a long, hungry wail. Emily, exhausted, tried to pick him up, but Margaret blocked her path, planting herself in front of the crib. She stood there, arms crossed, watching the baby cry for forty-five minutes. She ignored Emily’s pleas, her own hands folded calmly as she lectured her daughter-in-law on the "virtues of endurance."
