Chapter 4 - The Rupture of the Sponge

Ethan stepped forward into the kitchen, his leather shoes creating a sharp, echoing slap against the tile floor that shattered the quiet hum of the running faucet.

Clara flinched violently at the sound, her shoulders jumping as she immediately dropped her chin even lower, her wet hands darting upward to frantically wipe at her eyes and cheeks with the damp, soapy sleeves of her flannel shirt. She attempted to rearrange her face into a neutral, compliant mask, turning her body slightly toward him while trying to keep her heavy belly hidden behind the rim of the sink.

"Ethan?" she said, her voice small, raspy, and trembling with a forced, desperate layer of normalcy that made his heart ache. "You’re... you’re home early. I’m sorry, the kitchen is a bit of a mess tonight. I’ll... I’ll warm up your dinner right now. The girls left some chicken in the bag, and I can just finish these last few pans while it heats—"

"Let go of the sponge, Clara."

Ethan’s voice didn't carry its usual corporate authority or executive balance. It was low, rough, and vibrating with an intense, concentrated internal fury that caused Clara to freeze mid-sentence, her amber eyes widening as she looked up at him through her red, swollen eyelids.

"It’s really okay, Ethan," she whispered, her fingers tightening reflexively around the green scouring pad, her knuckles pale under the soapy film. "I’m almost done with the heavy stuff. If I don't finish them tonight, the grease will set into the quartz, and your mother prefers the counters to be completely clear before she makes her morning tea—"

"Clara. Drop it. Now."

He crossed the remaining distance between them in two long strides. He didn't wait for her consent. He reached down into the grey, lukewarm water, his expensive dress watch submerging past the bezel as his fingers gently but firmly wrapped around her wrists. He unclasped her trembling fingers from the rough texture of the sponge, lifting the green pad from her hand and tossing it into the corner of the basin with a wet, heavy thud.

He reached over with his left hand, grabbing the chrome lever of the industrial faucet and slamming it downward, instantly cutting off the stream of running water.

An absolute, suffocating silence descended upon the kitchen, broken only by the distant, muffled sound of the television laugh track carrying down the corridor.

Ethan held both of her hands within his palms. They were freezing, waterlogged, and rough from the chemical soap, the skin on her fingers wrinkled from hours of exposure to the water. He pulled her gently away from the damp edge of the sink, his eyes dropping to her swollen ankles and the dark, wet patch on her shirt where her pregnant belly had been leaning against the hard stone for support.

"How long?" Ethan asked, his voice breaking significantly as he looked directly into her tired, exhausted face, the tears beginning to well in his own eyes for the first time in ten years. "How long has this been happening, Clara? How long have you been standing out here in the dark doing this while they sit in there?"
