Chapter 5 - The Final Balance Sheet

The clock in the boardroom of the Vance Group hit 11:47 a.m. when the wide projection screen on the wall automatically flared to life. It didn't show the market ticker anymore; it showed a high-definition video link from the conference room of Apex Investigative Analytics down the street.

Elena sat at the center of the screen, her cream dress perfect, the mark on her jaw hidden beneath a neat, professional dressing. She looked straight into the camera, her gray eyes cool, clear, and completely devoid of human expression.

Julian, Malcolm, and Victoria stood around the mahogany table, their faces pale under the fluorescent tubes, their breathing audible in the silent room.

"Elena," Julian stepped toward the screen, his hands raised in a final, desperate gesture of supplication. "Elena, please. We can talk about this. The company... we built this name for three generations. You can't just destroy it because of a family argument at breakfast. I’ll apologize. I’ll sign whatever you want. Just tell the banks to release the operational cash."

Elena looked at him for five seconds—a silence so heavy it seemed to choke the air out of the room through the speaker system.

"It wasn't a family argument, Julian," she said, her voice dropping into that quiet, terrifyingly precise tone her father had used when analyzing a fraudulent ledger. "It was a crime. And you didn't build this name, Julian. You stole it from forty thousand men who worked the decks while your father hid the margins in Switzerland."

She turned her eyes to Malcolm. "At eleven-fifteen, the state of New York terminated your port access permits, Mr. Vance. Your ships are currently classified as unauthorized vessels in US waters. The coast guard is moving to escort the Vance Voyager to a secure anchorage off Sandy Hook."

Malcolm did not shout. He did not slam his hand into the table. He simply sat down in the nearest chair, his spine finally curving, his head dropping into his hands as the reality of his total, unmitigated ruin settled into his bones. "You’ve killed us," he whispered. "You’ve killed the whole family."

"No," Elena said, her hand moving to the corner of her tablet screen to execute the final command. "You killed yourselves, Mr. Vance. You just used my hand to sign the certificate."

She looked at Victoria, who was still sitting rigid in her chair, her eyes fixed onto the silver teacup she had brought from the house.

"The estate in Greenwich is being locked down by the sheriff’s department at noon, Victoria," Elena said softly. "The house staff has been reassigned to a private service company under my name. I suggest you pack your personal things before the lunch service ends. Because the gate locks are being changed at one o'clock, and the new owner doesn't like the food."

Elena reached forward and clicked the mouse.

The screen went black, leaving the three remaining members of the Vance family sitting in the dark boardroom, listening to the distant, rhythmic sound of the sirens rising from the street below as the morning ended and the lunch hour began.
