Chapter 7 - THE RECKONING OF BLOOD

Four months passed on Isla de la Sombra.
Four months of golden sunlight, smooth blue water, and total, absolute peace.
In those four months, Leo transformed from a fragile, dying shadow of a child into a thriving, plump, laughing baby boy. His pale skin turned a rich, golden tan from the island sun; his sunken cheeks filled out into soft, deep dimples that appeared whenever I tickled his belly; and his cloudy blue eyes cleared into a sharp, bright, sparkling hazel—the exact shade of his father’s eyes when the sun hit them directly.
He was six months old now, weighed sixteen pounds, and had just cut his first two bottom teeth.
And I had transformed, too.
The thin, bruised, terrified maid who had scrubbed floors in a navy uniform was gone.
In her place stood a woman who wore soft silk dresses, whose dark hair hung in thick, healthy waves past her shoulders, whose body was strong, healthy, and filled with a quiet, fierce confidence that no one could ever take away.
Every morning, I woke up in the master suite, nursed Leo as the sun rose over the ocean, and walked down to the lower terrace, where Lorenzo was waiting for us.
Over those four months, Lorenzo Rossi had changed, too.
The cold, ruthless monster who walked through life with a gun in his hand and death in his eyes had slowly, day by day, let his guard down in the warm island air. He didn't carry his pistol inside the house anymore. He sat on the sunlit terrace with Leo in his massive lap, letting the baby grab his dark necktie, pull his hair, and smear mashed bananas over his expensive linen shirts, letting out low, booming rumbles of laughter that made my heart leap in my chest.
We had become a family. Unspoken, unwritten, but absolute.
He never touched me with force. He never demanded anything of me. Every look he gave me across the dinner table, every touch of his large hand against the small of my back as we walked along the beach, was filled with a deep, reverent, and possessive warmth that made my skin hum with electric life.
I had fallen in love with him.
Not with the feared mob boss, but with the father who would burn his own kingdom to the ground to keep his child safe.
On a warm Tuesday evening in late September, as the golden sun sank below the ocean horizon, Lorenzo stood on the upper terrace, staring at a secure satellite tablet in his hands.
His face had returned to that cold, granite hardness I hadn't seen in months.
I set Leo down in his playpen on the wool rug and walked out onto the marble terrace, wrapping a light cashmere shawl over my shoulders.
"Lorenzo?" I asked softly, stopping beside him. "What is it?"
Lorenzo didn't look up from the tablet screen instantly. He swiped his thumb across the glass, displaying a series of high-definition surveillance photographs taken in the heart of the mainland city.
"Frank Moretti," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into that deep, gravelly low tone. "He has taken over my old territories on the docks. He believes I died in the boathouse explosion four months ago. He has consolidated his power with the syndicate leaders, and tonight... he is hosting a victory banquet in the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel."
My chest tightened slightly, a faint shadow of the old terror creeping into my stomach. "The mainland..."
Lorenzo turned his head slowly, his obsidian eyes locking onto mine in the twilight.
"It is time to finish it, Elena," Lorenzo said softly. "I cannot leave my son in a world where Frank Moretti still draws breath. He tried to poison my boy. He brought violence into my home. He tried to take you from me."
He stepped closer, his large, warm hand rising to gently rest against the side of my neck, his thumb caressing my cheek.
"I am going back tonight," Lorenzo said.
My breath caught in my throat. I reached up, my hand covering his large fingers, pressing my face against his warm palm.
"Take me with you," I whispered.
Lorenzo’s dark eyes flared with sudden, intense shock. "No. It is too dangerous. Frank’s men will be armed to the teeth. The hotel will be a warzone—"
"I am not a fragile maid anymore, Lorenzo," I interrupted firmly, looking directly into his obsidian glare with absolute, unwavering resolve. "Frank Moretti helped Marcus destroy my daughter. He tried to kill Leo. I want to look him in the eyes when he falls."
Lorenzo stared at me for five long seconds.
He didn't see a helpless woman asking for protection. He saw his match—a woman forged in the same fire, bound to him by blood, milk, and survival.

A slow, dark, breathtaking smile spread across his harsh, beautiful mouth.
"Then wear black, my queen," Lorenzo whispered, his lips lowering to press a slow, deep, possessive kiss against my forehead. "Tonight, we take back our city."
