Chapter 6 - The Shadow of the Past

Power, however, does not allow vacuums to persist without consequence.

By the following Monday, the ripples of Harland’s dismissal had reached the outer edges of my business network. Arthur Harland had not simply been a corrupt estate manager; he had been a convenient clearinghouse for a network of municipal fixers, corrupt city inspectors, and low-level politicians who relied on the Luca Estate’s blind eye to launder kickbacks through inflated service contracts.

At 9:00 PM, my security chief, Marcus Vance, walked into my study unannounced, placing a thick manila folder on the edge of my desk.

“We have a problem, Dante,” Marcus said, his voice low and gravelly. He was a former federal tactical commander who didn't rattle easily, but his jaw was clenched tight.

I didn't look up from the shipping manifest I was reviewing. “Specify.”

“Harland didn't just crawl into a hole after we threw him out,” Marcus said, pulling a photograph from the folder and sliding it across the wood. “He went straight to Viktor Vance.”

I stopped writing.

Viktor Vance—no relation to Marcus—was a ruthless, old-guard syndicate boss who controlled the docklands on the south side of the river. For years, we had maintained an uneasy, armed neutrality, carving up the city’s logistics corridors with strict boundaries. But Viktor had been looking for an excuse to expand his territory northward for months.

I picked up the photograph. It showed Arthur Harland sitting in a booth at a dimly lit steakhouse on the edge of the financial district, leaning across the table in deep conversation with one of Viktor’s primary enforcers.

“Harland knows the estate’s internal security layout,” Marcus continued, crossing his arms over his broad chest. “He knows where the weak points are, he knows the shift changes for the perimeter guards, and more importantly... he knows about the new domestic staff. He’s been telling Viktor that the estate is vulnerable, that your focus has shifted, and that you’ve gone soft because you’re playing domestic savior to a housekeeper and her kid.”

The temperature in the study seemed to drop ten degrees.

I leaned back in my leather chair, staring at the photograph of Harland’s greasy, vindictive smile.

He thought he could use my humanity as a weapon against me. He thought that by taking pity on a sick mother and a freezing child, I had exposed a fatal flaw in my armor.

He didn't understand the fundamental rule of my existence: I hadn't changed my nature. I had simply redirected my absolute, unforgiving focus from protecting my empire to protecting my home.

“When is Viktor planning to make his move?” I asked quietly.

“Tomorrow night,” Marcus replied. “A coordinated strike on the south perimeter gate during the shift change. They’re planning to hit the west service wing first—take hostages, create leverage, and force you to sign over the north-shore shipping terminals.”

I looked down at the photograph one last time, then tossed it into the stainless-steel wastebasket beside my desk.

“Good,” I said.

Marcus blinked, surprised by my reaction. “Good?”

“If Viktor wants to come onto my property, I’d prefer he didn't waste my time trying to schedule an appointment,” I stood up, buttoning the front of my tailored vest with crisp, measured precision. “Double the perimeter guard on the north and east gates. Leave the south gate completely dark. Pull all internal security personnel away from the main corridors and deploy them in a perimeter ring around the west wing.”

Marcus stared at me for a second, then a grim, predatory smile touched the corners of his mouth. He understood the strategy instantly.

“A kill box,” Marcus said approvingly.

“Not a kill box, Marcus,” I corrected, walking over to the heavy oak cabinet behind my desk and unlocking the concealed wall safe. I reached inside and pulled out a matte-black, suppressed tactical pistol, checking the magazine with a practiced, metallic click. “A lesson. Let’s show Viktor what happens when you mistake a lion sleeping near its cubs for a domestic pet.”
