Chapter 5 - The Spider's Web Contracts

By 09:00, the tension within the Bellaro estate had reached a boiling point. True to Lorenzo’s orders, Dr. Victor Crane arrived for his morning follow-up. He looked as though he had aged ten years in the last eight hours; his skin was a pasty yellow, his hands shook so badly he could barely open his leather medical bag, and two of Lorenzo's personal bodyguards stood directly behind him like twin shadows.

Maya stood by the crib, her arms crossed, watching as Crane went through the motions of checking Nico's lungs. The infant, now thriving on clean formula and normal saline, actually gurgled, a sound that had not been heard in the nursery for months.

"His... his lungs are clear," Crane stammered, his voice dry as parchment. "The presentation is... remarkably stable today."

"Imagine that," Lorenzo said from his desk in the corner. "No midnight spike. No cardiac distress. It's almost as if the disease disappeared the moment the nurse changed the caps."

Before Crane could answer, the heavy double doors of the nursery opened. Dante Bellaro walked in, followed closely by two men Maya had never seen before. They were older, dressed in heavy wool coats despite the morning warmth, their faces weathered and hard. These were the senior capos of the Bellaro organization—men who had served Lorenzo's father and held significant sway over the syndicate's street operations.

"Lorenzo," Dante said, his voice carrying an artificial boldness. "We have a problem. Word is getting out to the other families that you're clearing the house. The docks are stalled because your security teams are running background checks on our own people instead of moving the cargo. The men are getting nervous."

One of the older men, a grizzled veteran named Sal, stepped forward. "Lorenzo, we respect you. You took the reins when Marco was taken out, and you’ve kept the money flowing. But this kid... he’s been sick since he dropped. Now you're locking down the estate over an agency nurse's word? We need stability, boss. The Maroni family in North Chicago is already sniffing around our distribution lines because they think you're distracted by a dying child."

Maya felt a chill run down her spine. These men didn't see an eight-month-old baby fighting for his life; they saw a liability on a balance sheet.

The Medical Defense"He isn't dying," Maya said, her voice clear and sharp enough to halt Sal in his tracks.

The old gangster turned his cold, grey eyes toward her. "Who spoke to you, girl?"

"I am the medical professional in charge of this child's care," Maya said, stepping out from behind the crib. She picked up the clear container containing the dissected bottle cap and held it directly in front of Sal’s face. "Look at this. This isn't a family dispute or a manifestation of the Captain's paranoia. This is a weapon. It’s an engineered delivery system designed to introduce a synthetic cardiac toxin into Nico Bellaro’s system every night at midnight. The child isn't sick; he’s been targeted for execution from within this house."

Sal frowned, his heavy brow furrowing as he looked at the micro-seam in the plastic. "What is this garbage?"

"It’s twenty years in a federal penitentiary for everyone involved," Maya countered. "The toxin used is a controlled substance regulated under the Federal Bioterrorism Act. The moment this bottle leaves this house and goes to a private lab, the FBI will be involved. Not for a mafia shooting, but for a chemical assault on an infant."

Dante’s face twitched. He stepped toward Maya, his hand rising in an aggressive gesture. "You need to shut your mouth—"

Lorenzo was out of his chair before Dante could finish the sentence. He didn't draw a weapon; he simply placed his massive hand on Dante’s shoulder and pressed down. The younger brother’s knees buckled under the sudden, immense weight, his face turning pale as he was forced down onto the stool beside the crib.

"My son is the future of this family," Lorenzo said, his voice a low, terrifying growl that resonated through the stone walls. "Anyone who thinks otherwise can step outside these gates right now and see how long they survive without the Bellaro name behind them."

He looked at Sal. "The docks stay open, but the nursery stays locked. And Dr. Crane is going to tell us exactly who paid for the engineering of this cap."

Crane fell to his knees, his medical bag spilling onto the floor. "It was the pharmaceutical accounts! Dante... Dante gave me the contacts in Jersey! They brought the plastic from a medical supply facility in Newark! I didn't know it would kill him, Lorenzo! They told me it would just keep him weak... keep him from being named the official heir until the reorganization was finished!"

The nursery went dead silent. Dante looked up at his brother, his eyes wide with the frantic terror of a trapped animal. "Lorenzo... he’s lying! He’s trying to save his own skin! I would never touch the kid!"

"Then why did you call Crane three times this morning before breakfast?" Maya asked, pulling her own phone from her pocket—the guards had returned it to her at dawn upon Lorenzo's order. She showed the digital screen to Sal. "We intercepted the routing from the house tower. Dante wasn't checking the shipping lanes down at the docks. He was telling Dr. Crane to clean out his office before the forensic teams arrived."
