Chapter 4 - The Audit of the Ambush

The North Shore estate was a fortress of granite and glass perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. It was the only property Julian owned that had been completely rewired according to his own security specifications after the ambush—a place where every door lock, every security camera, and every motion sensor was routed through an independent, military-grade server located forty feet beneath the rock face.

By 2:00 a.m., Leo and Nico were fast asleep in the massive guest suite, their small bodies buried beneath white goose-down comforters. Sofia sat at the large kitchen island, a mug of black coffee between her hands, watching Julian as he worked at his terminal.

The large monitors on the wall were displaying the contents of the solid-state drive Sofia had brought from the hotel.

“Look at the time stamp,” Julian said, pointing his finger at the blue lines of code. “The camera grid was dropped at 11:14 p.m. The ambush occurred at 11:30 p.m. The sniper didn't just take a random shot; he had a laser guide wired into the pier's perimeter lights. He knew exactly where my car would stop because the security detail had been instructed to park thirty yards away from the main office.”

Sofia walked over to stand behind his chair, her hands hesitating before she gently placed them on his shoulders. The tension in his neck was like iron cable. “She used your own men against you, Julian. The team that was supposed to protect you that night... they were all reassigned to the South End terminals two days later.”

“Except for Marcus,” Julian said, looking up at her reflection in the glass screen. “Marcus was the one who pulled me out of the line of fire. He took two rounds to the thigh getting me into the armored trunk. That’s why he’s still here.”

“Julian, she’s going to strike again,” Sofia said, her voice dropping into a desperate whisper. “She knows the drive has enough evidence to bring in the federal maritime commission. If they audit the Vale accounts from 2022, she faces life in a maximum-security prison for treason and arms smuggling. She won't wait for your thirty-fifth birthday. She’ll clear the board now.”

“Let her try,” Julian said, his eyes reflecting the cold blue light of the monitors. “For four years, I’ve been playing the role of the tragic, disabled nephew. I let her take the meetings with the New York syndicates. I let her think she was running the docks. But she forgot one fundamental law of maritime shipping.”

He tapped the keyboard, bringing up a separate tracking interface. A map of the Atlantic coastline appeared, covered in hundreds of green, blinking blips.

“She owns the management, Sofia. But I own the ships,” Julian explained, a dark, brilliant smile crossing his face. “Every captain on these vessels was hired under my father’s administration or mine. They don't take orders from a woman who sits in a penthouse in Back Bay. They take orders from the man who holds the maritime licenses. Tomorrow morning, I’m shutting down every terminal from Boston to New York. Not a single crate of her contraband leaves the harbor. I’m freezing her liquidity.”

Sofia looked at him, a mixture of awe and terror in her gray eyes. “That will start a war within the Commission, Julian. The other families... they won't sit quietly while their supply lines are choked.”

“Then let there be war,” Julian said, reaching back to place his hand over hers. “They took my legs, Sofia. They took four years of my children's lives. They made my sons grow up in hiding while I sat in this room staring at the sea. The time for balance sheets is over. We’re closing the account.”
