Chapter 4 - The Cleaning of the House

Over the next forty-eight hours, a silent, total purge swept through the DeLuca organization across the state of New York.

With Vincent Romano’s network of conspirators fully exposed by Daniel Cross’s cyber-forensic analysis, Marcus Bell and Anthony Graves led tactical teams across Long Island, Brooklyn, and Queens.

Eleven corrupt lieutenants who had accepted bribes from Vincent were quietly arrested or permanently exiled from the state. The eighty million dollars in attempted offshore transfers was successfully recovered and secured inside the family's primary reserves.

The traitorous doctor who had supplied Vincent with military-grade sedatives had his medical license revoked and was handed over to federal authorities along with a mountain of incriminating corporate documents.

By Friday afternoon, the vast DeLuca estate on Long Island was entirely secure once again.

The dark clouds of paranoia and fear that had hung over the property for a week had vanished, replaced by warm autumn sunshine pouring through the grand windows.

In the grand master study on the second floor, Lorenzo sat behind his mahogany desk.

He was wearing a fresh white shirt, his left arm still supported by a dark velvet sling. On his desk lay two items: his father’s crushed steel pocket watch, and the broken green plastic handle of Emma’s preschool scissors.

A quiet knock sounded at the heavy oak door.

“Come in,” Lorenzo called out softly.

The door swung open, and Sophia Rossi walked into the room, dressed in her neat head housekeeper’s uniform, carrying a tray of warm espresso.

Behind her, three-year-old Emma came skipping into the study, wearing a bright new yellow dress, holding a brand-new, unopened box of craft supplies under her arm.

“Good afternoon, Mr. DeLuca,” Sophia said warmly, placing the espresso tray on his desk.

“Sophia, please,” Lorenzo said gently, gesturing toward the soft leather chairs across from his desk. “Sit down.”

Sophia hesitated for a second, then sat down softly, while Emma immediately ran over to Lorenzo’s desk, standing on her tiptoes to peer at the broken green plastic sitting near his elbow.

“Look, Mr. Lorenzo!” Emma announced proudly, holding up her new box. “Mommy bought me ten new scissors! They are blue bears!”

Lorenzo smiled warmly, reaching out his right hand to pat her head. “Blue bears are vastly superior to green rabbits, Emma. An excellent choice.”

Lorenzo then picked up a heavy, gold-embossed leather folder from his desk and slid it gently across the polished mahogany surface toward Sophia.

Sophia looked at the folder nervously. “What is this, Mr. DeLuca?”

“Open it,” Lorenzo instructed softly.

Sophia opened the folder with careful fingers. As her eyes scanned the legal documents inside, her breath caught in her throat, and her eyes filled with rapid, uncontrollable tears.

The documents were official, certified deeds of ownership for a sprawling, three-story historic Victorian residence located in the heart of Huntington, Long Island—just ten minutes away from the estate.

Attached to the property deed was a fully funded educational trust fund of five million dollars established under the legal name of Emma Rossi, guaranteeing her full tuition at any private academy or university in the world.

“Mr. DeLuca... no...” Sophia choked out, her voice trembling as she covered her mouth. “This... this is millions of dollars. I can’t possibly accept this. I’m just a maid...”

Lorenzo leaned forward across his desk, looking straight into Sophia’s tear-filled eyes with an intensity that burned with absolute sincerity.

“You are not just a maid, Sophia,” Lorenzo said firmly. “Your husband gave his life to protect my men eight years ago. Your daughter saved my life four days ago. And you had the intelligence and courage to trust your instincts when every man in this city was losing his head.”

He reached across the desk and gently closed her trembling hands over the leather folder.

“This property and trust are not a gift, Sophia,” Lorenzo told her softly. “They are a payment of a long-overdue debt. The house is legally yours. The trust is legally Emma’s. And as long as I draw breath on this earth, no person in this world will ever threaten your family again.”

Sophia looked down at the documents, then up at the formidable man sitting across from her, tears of pure relief and profound gratitude streaming down her cheeks.

“Thank you, Lorenzo,” she whispered softly, using his first name for the very first time in seven years. “Thank you.”

Emma jumped up and down, pointing at the window. “Mommy, look! Biscuit is outside!”

Sophia laughed through her tears, wiping her face with a handkerchief. “Go see the cat, Emma. Stay on the porch!”

Emma skipped out of the study, her tiny laughter echoing down the grand hallway, filling the massive mansion with a warmth and joy it had not possessed in decades.
