Chapter 8 - The Long Road Home

Three months later, the Briar Glen farmhouse looked different.
The overgrown bushes had been trimmed, the wooden fence repaired, and in the sprawling backyard beneath the grand oak tree, a magnificent new tree house stood proudly against the sky, complete with a rope ladder, a wooden balcony, and a painted sign reading Noah’s Fort.
The federal trials had concluded swiftly. With Ethan’s comprehensive testimony and the titanium drive’s digital evidence, the remaining members of the syndicate leadership were sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. Noah threw the baseball with all his might, and Ethan caught it easily with a leather glove, laughing as his son cheered.
“Hey, Mom!” Noah shouted, waving his arms. “Tell Daddy it’s my turn to pitch!”
Olivia smiled, the brilliant morning sunlight warming her face. She took a sip of her coffee and shook her head. “You’ll have to negotiate with him yourself, Noah!”
Ethan walked over toward the porch, tossing the baseball into the air and catching it effortlessly. He stepped up the wooden steps, stopping right in front of Olivia. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest as he looked out over the green fields stretching toward the horizon.
“You know,” Ethan murmured, resting his chin on her shoulder, “the farmhouse looks a lot better in the sunlight than it does in the rain.”
“Everything does,” Olivia replied, leaning back against him.
A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the oak trees, carrying the sweet scent of pine and wet earth—the smell of a world that was finally at peace.
Ethan kissed the top of her head, his grip tightening around her.
They had lost six years to the darkness, but as the laughter of their son echoed across the lawn, Olivia knew the deepest truth of their story:
