Chapter 3 - THE VOICE IN THE DARK

The hallways of the Vitale estate had become a war zone.

Muzzle flashes illuminated the dark wood paneling in brilliant, violent bursts of orange light. The air was thick with the acrid stench of cordite, burning carpets, and shattered plaster.

Damiano moved through the shadows of the west wing like a demon born of the storm.

He held Mia securely against his left shoulder with his left arm, using his body as a bulletproof shield. In his right hand, his pistol barked with deadly, surgical precision.

BANG. BANG.

A masked intruder dressed in tactical gear collapsed in the hallway, two heavy 9mm rounds through his chest armor.

BANG.

Another gunman coming around the corner of the gallery took a bullet directly between his eyes, dropping instantly to the floorboards.

Mia remained silent against his neck. She was shaking, her small body trembling with instinctual fear, but she didn't scream. She squeezed her eyes shut, her tiny fingers digging into the fabric of Damiano’s dark suit.

“Hold tight, little daisy,” Damiano whispered into her curls, his voice unbelievably gentle amidst the deafening roar of combat. “I have you. No one touches you.”

He reached the heavy reinforced steel door of his private study at the end of the hall. He keyed in his six-digit security code, slapped his palm against the biometric scanner, and pushed the door open, stepping inside and locking it behind him.

The study was dark, illuminated only by the flashes of lightning outside the window.

Damiano set Mia down behind his heavy walnut desk, pulling a bulletproof Kevlar vest from a side cabinet and draping it over her like a heavy blanket, creating a small, safe bunker for her on the floor.

“Stay here, Mia,” Damiano instructed, kneeling beside her. “Do not move until I come back for you.”

Mia looked up at him, her amber eyes bright in the dark room. She reached out her hand and touched the silver pocket watch sticking out of his waistcoat pocket.

“Tick-tock,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly.

Damiano pulled the silver pocket watch from his pocket and pressed it into her tiny hands. “Hold this for me. Listen to the tick-tock. It will keep you safe.”

Mia nodded solemnly, clutching the cold silver watch against her chest.

Damiano stood up, turning toward the door to rejoin the fight outside. But as he turned, he noticed something wrong.

The bottom drawer of his walnut desk was hanging wide open.

This was the drawer where his father’s confidential files were kept—documents that had been sealed since Domenico’s death twenty years ago. The key to that drawer was kept on a hidden ring that only two people possessed: Damiano himself... and Renato Salvi.

Damiano walked over to the desk, his eyes narrowing.

The heavy leather folder marked 1996 - HUDSON DOCKS & BELLANDI AGREEMENTS was gone.

A sudden, chilling realization began to crystallize in Damiano’s mind.

The attack tonight wasn't an attempt to assassinate him. It was a distraction. A violent, chaotic smoke screen designed to allow someone inside the house to steal those specific documents and escape during the confusion.

Footsteps hurried toward the study door from the private emergency exit in the adjacent library.

Damiano slipped into the deep shadows behind the thick velvet curtains near the window, his gun raised, his breathing silent.

The library door clicked open.

A figure slipped into the dark study, carrying a leather briefcase in one hand and a suppressed pistol in the other. The lightning outside flashed, illuminating the man’s silver hair and impeccably tailored suit.

It was Renato.

Renato didn't look like a loyal house manager in a panic. His movements were calm, deliberate, and entirely free of fear. He walked straight to the open desk drawer, checked to confirm it was empty, and then reached for the hidden wall safe behind the oil painting of Domenico Vitale.

“Looking for something, Renato?” Damiano’s voice emerged from the shadows like a blade sliding from a sheath.

Renato froze.

Slowly, carefully, Renato turned around, raising his suppressed pistol toward the shadow near the curtain.

A single shot echoed through the room.

BANG.

Renato let out a sharp cry of pain as a bullet from Damiano’s Sig Sauer shattered his right wrist, sending his suppressed pistol flying across the room to land on the rug.

Damiano stepped out of the darkness, his weapon still trained directly on Renato’s chest.

“Damiano!” Renato gasped, clutching his bleeding, broken wrist, his face twisting in agony. “Thank God! Intruders... they forced their way into the library! I was trying to secure your father’s papers before they reached the study!”

“Liar,” Damiano said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “The key to that drawer was in your pocket before the first shot was fired tonight.”

Renato backed away until his spine hit the edge of the walnut desk, sweating profusely. “Damiano... you don't understand... I’ve served your family for fifteen years! I loved your father!”

“Did you?”

A small, quiet voice spoke from beneath the desk.

Mia crawled out from under the heavy Kevlar blanket, holding the silver pocket watch tightly in her hands. She looked up at Renato with absolute, innocent clarity.

“Bad man,” Mia whispered, pointing a small finger at Renato.

Renato’s eyes widened with sudden, pathetic panic as he looked down at the child.

Mia looked up at Damiano, her amber eyes wide and bright in the dim light of the lightning storm.

“The bad man gave daddy the bitter tea,” Mia said, her tiny voice cutting through the silence of the room like a silver bell.

Damiano’s blood froze in his veins.

Daddy?

He looked from Mia to Renato, his mind working with terrifying speed. Elena... the new domestic worker... the girl who appeared out of nowhere today...

“Mia,” Damiano said, kneeling down beside her, keeping his gun aimed at Renato’s heart. “What did you say?”

Mia pointed her small finger directly at Renato’s face.

“Bad man with silver hair,” Mia whispered softly. “He came to grandpa’s house a long time ago. He put bitter powder in the tea cup. Daddy saw him. Daddy ran away, but the bad man buried daddy in the mud.”

Damiano stood up slowly. The world around him seemed to stop spinning.

Grandpa’s house... bitter tea... twenty years ago...

Domenico Vitale hadn't died of a heart attack.

He had been poisoned.

And the man who had poisoned him was the man who had served as Damiano’s closest advisor for fifteen years—the man who had held Damiano’s hand at his mother’s grave, the man who had scheduled his meetings, managed his security, and carefully controlled every piece of information that reached his ears.

Mia wasn't just any child. She was the granddaughter of Domenico Vitale’s secret, legitimate son—a child born from an affair Domenico had kept hidden to protect him from the mafia wars. Elena was that son’s widow, hiding in the mountains after her husband was murdered by the very man standing in this room.

Renato looked at the child, his face draining of every last drop of color.

“You...” Renato breathed, his voice trembling with horrifying realization. “You’re Julian’s girl...”

May you like

Damiano stepped into Renato’s personal space, pressing the cold steel barrel of his Sig Sauer directly against the bridge of Renato’s nose.

“Tell me everything,” Damiano whispered, his voice vibrating with twenty years of suppressed rage. “Before I tear your soul out of your throat.”
