Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds over Manhattan, casting a sharp, blinding glare across the gleaming glass towers of Midtown. But inside the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor of Marchetti Tower, the atmosphere was as cold and desolate as the winter storm of the previous night.
Long mahogany tables, polished to a mirror finish, reflected the tense expressions of twelve senior corporate executives and board members who sat in absolute, suffocating silence. At the head of the table sat Lucas Marchetti. He wore a crisp, charcoal three-piece suit, his posture rigid, his dark eyes scanning the room with the clinical detachment of an executioner.
To his right sat a man who looked distinctly out of place: Arthur Vance, the longtime head of corporate compliance. Arthur was sweating profusely, his expensive silk tie slightly loosened at the collar, his trembling fingers clutching a heavy manila folder.
“Lucas,” Arthur began, his voice cracking nervously as he tried to project an aura of offended dignity. “This is an outrage. Dragging me into an emergency board meeting at seven in the morning based on unverified allegations from a disgruntled, terminated secretary is a gross violation of corporate protocol. I demand to know—”
“Silence, Arthur,” Lucas cut across him. The single, low-spoken command echoed off the oak walls with such crushing weight that Arthur instantly clamped his mouth shut, sinking back into his leather chair.
Lucas leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. He did not raise his voice, yet every person in the room felt the terrifying gravity of his presence.
“Last night, federal investigators received a complete, unredacted audit of our private subsidiary accounts spanning the last decade,” Lucas stated calmly. “They have already secured freeze orders on three offshore holding accounts managed directly by the compliance division. Accounts that were used to funnel hush money, purchase coerced non-disclosure agreements, and orchestrate the illegal exile of private citizens.”
A collective gasp rippled through the board members. Several of them instinctively looked away, avoiding Lucas’s piercing gaze.
“Mr. Marchetti, surely you aren't suggesting—” an elderly board member started to protest.
“I am not suggesting anything, Edward,” Lucas interrupted smoothly. “I am stating facts. For decades, this family and this board operated under the assumption that wealth and power placed us above the law. We buried scandals, silenced victims, and protected our bottom line at the expense of human lives. That era ended yesterday.”
Arthur Vance leaped to his feet, his face turning a sickly shade of pale gray. “You can't do this! Your mother authorized those actions! Madam Bianca signed off on every single transaction regarding the Cole girl! If you sink me, you sink the entire family foundation!”
The boardroom erupted into chaos. Shouts of protest and alarm bounced off the walls as the executives realized the sheer magnitude of the self-destructive path Lucas had chosen.
Lucas sat completely still amidst the noise, watching Arthur with cold amusement.
“My mother’s reign is over,” Lucas said, his voice rising effortlessly above the uproar. “And as for you, Arthur... you didn't just follow orders. You falsified medical records, forged financial statements, and perjured yourself to protect a criminal conspiracy.”
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom suddenly swung open with a sharp bang.
Two federal marshals in dark suits stepped into the room, followed closely by Margaret Hayes. They walked directly toward Arthur Vance, ignoring the gasps of shock from the surrounding executives.
“Arthur Vance?” the lead marshal asked, flashing a gold badge. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy. Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”
“No! This is insane! Lucas, you can't do this to me! I gave thirty years of my life to this company!” Arthur shrieked, thrashing wildly as the marshals clamped cold steel handcuffs around his wrists and dragged him backward toward the exit.
Arthur’s frantic screams echoed down the hallway until the heavy doors swung shut, plunging the boardroom back into a stunned, horrified silence.
Lucas stood up slowly from his chair. He buttoned his suit jacket, his dark eyes sweeping across the terrified faces of the remaining board members.

“The restructuring of Marchetti Holdings begins immediately,” Lucas announced, his voice ringing with absolute finality. “Every executive who participated in or covered up human rights violations within our corporate umbrella will submit their resignation by noon today, or face federal indictment alongside Arthur. Effective immediately, fifty percent of the corporate endowment is being transferred into a newly established trust fund bearing the name of Emma Cole—dedicated to supporting displaced mothers and children across the state.”
He didn't wait for objections, debates, or applause. Lucas turned on his heel, walked out of the boardroom, and left the shattered remnants of his family’s empire behind him.
