Chapter 8 - The Ruin of Arrogance

The scream that left Camille’s throat was shrill, wild, and filled with a terror that shattered her remaining composure into ash.
Yuri whipped around, his hand lunging toward a heavy automatic pistol resting on the desk, but before his fingers could touch the grip, I raised my submachine gun and fired two non-lethal rounds directly into his right shoulder and forearm.
Pft. Pft.
Yuri roared in pain, tumbling backward over his leather chair, crashing onto the tile floor as blood sprayed across the white computer console.
"DON'T MOVE!" Marco barked, entering the room right behind me, his weapon trained on the three remaining Russian enforcers standing near the windows.
The enforcers instantly raised their hands, dropping their rifles onto the floor, realizing they were completely outmatched and outmaneuvered.
Camille stumbled backward into the corner of the room, her glass of scotch shattering on the floorboards, her hands shaking so violently she could barely keep her balance. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, locked onto me as I stepped through the smoke, pulling my night-vision goggles up onto my forehead.
I wore no uniform, no suit—just dark tactical gear covered in rain silt, my face cold, hard, and unyielding.
"Gabriel..." she gasped, her voice barely an audible whisper. "How... how did you..."
"I built this city's security networks, Camille," I said softly, my voice cutting through the hum of the cooling fans in the control room. "Did you truly believe you could use my ex-fiancée’s stolen codes to break into a Sterling system?"
"You... you shot him!" she screamed, pointing a trembling finger at Yuri, who was groaning on the floor as Marco bound his hands with heavy zip-ties. "This is murder! You're a criminal!"
"This is private property, Camille," I corrected her, taking three slow, deliberate steps toward her corner until I stood directly over her. "You broke into a high-security industrial facility accompanied by armed foreign operatives. Under federal maritime law, my security force has full authority to use lethal force to defend our infrastructure."
She looked at me, then at the heavily armed men standing around the room, then at the blood on the computer console. The illusion of her power, her political influence, her upper-class immunity—everything she had built her life upon—collapsed completely around her.
She dropped to her knees on the dirty floor, burying her face in her manicured hands, weeping violently.
"Please, Gabriel..." she sobbed, her aristocratic voice broken into a pathetic whine. "Please don't kill me... I was mad... my father lost everything... I didn't know what I was doing..."
I looked down at her, feeling a profound, terrible emptiness.
"I am not going to kill you, Camille," I said quietly. "My family does not execute garbage. We simply dispose of it."
I turned my head toward Marco. "Has the Federal Special Operations commander arrived?"
"They just entered the lower perimeter gate, Mr. Sterling," Marco reported, stepping forward. "Director Hayes is leading the team personally."
Two minutes later, five federal agents in dark blue jackets stamped with gold federal insignias entered the ruined control room.
Director Hayes—a stern, grey-haired veteran who had worked closely with my father for twenty years—stepped up to me, extending his hand. "Gabriel. Excellent work. Your security team held the line cleanly."
"Director Hayes," I nodded, shaking his hand. "These men are operatives of the Eastern Syndicate. They were attempting to seize municipal shipping infrastructure."
I pointed down at Camille, who was still weeping on her knees in the corner.
"And that woman," I continued, my voice devoid of a single drop of warmth, "is Camille Vance. She provided the classified entry codes, facilitated the syndicate's entry, and attempted to sell state-regulated port assets to a criminal enterprise."
Director Hayes looked down at Camille, his expression cold and disgusted. "Miss Vance. You are under arrest for federal treason, conspiracy to commit armed terrorism, and corporate espionage."
Two federal agents stepped forward, grabbing Camille by her arms, lifting her clean off the floor, and pulling her hands behind her back to snap steel cuffs around her wrists.
"Gabriel! No! Please!" she screamed, kicking her feet as she was dragged toward the doorway. "Gabriel! Look at me! I loved you! You can't let them do this to me! Tell them it was a mistake!"
May you like
I didn't turn around. I didn't give her the satisfaction of a final look.
I stood by the window, watching the rain beat against the glass, as her shrieks faded down the concrete stairwell into the cold, empty night.
