Chapter 4 - The Poisoner's Web

The Romano family estate in Lake Forest was draped in black.
The grand chandeliers in the entrance hall were dimmed, their crystal prisms casting long, mourning shadows across the polished oak floors. To the outside world, the family was in ruins. The newspapers had spent the last forty-eight hours reporting on the "tragic food poisoning incident" at Belladonna that had left Evelyn Romano dead and Lucas Romano in critical condition.
Vanessa Romano arrived at the estate at exactly 2:00 PM on Monday.
She was dressed in a stunning, high-fashion black lace dress, her face veiled in delicate dark mesh that did not quite hide the triumph in her eyes. She walked with the slow, measured grace of a grieving widow, her hand-tailored heels clicking a soft, solemn rhythm on the stone driveway.
Beside her walked her attorney, a sharp-faced man named Donald Vance, who was carrying a leather briefcase containing the forged corporate transfers Vanessa had spent the last year preparing.
"It’s a tragedy," Vanessa said to the housekeeper, her voice cracking with a perfectly rehearsed sob. "To lose Mother and Lucas in the same weekend... I don't know how Dante is going to survive it."
"He is waiting for you in the library, Mrs. Romano," Mrs. Whitaker said, her face set in a hard, expressionless mask.
When Vanessa pushed open the heavy oak doors of the library, she expected to find Dante broken, drinking whiskey by the fire, surrounded by his remaining enforcers.
Instead, she found the room bright, the heavy velvet drapes thrown open to let in the cold autumn sunlight.
Dante sat behind his father’s old mahogany desk, his hands folded neatly before him. He was not alone.
Sitting in the leather armchairs before the desk were three senior members of the Romano family council—elderly men with silver hair and scarred faces who had helped build the empire from the ground up.
And standing beside Dante’s chair, dressed in a sharp, professional navy blue suit that made her look like a seasoned corporate counsel, was Emma Carter.
Vanessa stopped in her tracks, her hand flying to her throat. The veil over her face fluttered with her sudden, sharp intake of air.
"Dante?" Vanessa said, quickly recovering her composure. "Who is this? Why is there a servant in our family meeting?"
"This is Emma," Dante said, his voice flat and smooth. "She is the executive medical administrator for our family trust. She has been reviewing the medical reports from the night Lucas fell ill."
Vanessa’s eyes flickered toward Emma, a momentary flash of cold, reptilian fury crossing her beautiful features before she forced her smile back into place. "I see. Well, perhaps we should discuss these matters privately, Dante. This is a time of grief. The family estate—"
"The family estate is not yours to inherit, Vanessa," a cool, clear voice spoke from the shadows behind the high-backed leather chairs.
Evelyn Romano stepped out into the light.
She was wearing her navy blue dress, the single strand of pearls around her neck catching the sunlight. She looked healthy, vibrant, and completely alive.
Vanessa’s face turned the color of ashes. She took a step backward, her hand gripping her attorney’s arm so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Evelyn? But... the hospital... the news..."
"You shouldn't believe everything you read in the papers, Vanessa," Evelyn said, walking over to stand beside her eldest son. "Especially when the papers are fed their stories by my family’s public relations team."
"This is a trick," Donald Vance, Vanessa’s attorney, blustered, his voice shaking. "We have legal documents! Lucas signed over his shares of the shipping terminals to his wife in the event of his incapacitation!"
"You mean these documents?" Emma asked, lifting a stack of papers from the desk.
"Those are confidential corporate filings!" Vance shouted.
"These are evidence of corporate fraud and attempted murder," Emma said, her voice echoing clearly through the high-ceilinged room.
The Evidence Ledger:
Document A: The forged signature of Lucas Romano, dated three days prior to his poisoning, using a digital template stolen from his private office.
Document B: The financial wire transfers from the Moretti family trust to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands under Vanessa’s maiden name.
Document C: The high-resolution surveillance footage from Belladonna’s service corridor, showing Vanessa’s reflection in the glass as she poisoned the dessert marked "E."
Vanessa looked at the projection screen that Emma had activated on the library wall. The image was crystal clear: her own fingers, delicate and manicured, holding the small glass vial over the vanilla panna cotta.

"You..." Vanessa hissed, her eyes locking onto Emma with a hatred so pure it seemed to vibrate in the air. "You were just a waitress. You were nothing. You were invisible."
"That was your mistake, Vanessa," Emma said, standing tall beside Dante. "You forgot that the people who serve your food are still human beings. We see everything. Especially when you think we're not looking."
