PART 3 — The Enemy I Never Saw Coming

For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
Michael’s father.
A man who had been dead for five years.
A man whose funeral I attended.
A man whose portrait still hung in the Carter family home.
The same man whose company principles Michael claimed to follow every day.
Impossible.
But the evidence was sitting in front of me.
The messages.
The number.
The timing.
Someone was using his identity.
And somehow…
they knew me.
I called Ryan back immediately.
“Trace the number again.”
“I already did.”
“Then do it deeper.”
A pause.
“Claire…”
“Ryan.”
My voice hardened.
“I don’t need possibilities. I need answers.”
He was quiet for a moment.
Then:
“Give me an hour.”
The call ended.
I sat there staring at my laptop.
The email that was supposed to expose an affair had uncovered something much darker.
And the most disturbing part?
Michael had known something was wrong.
He just didn’t know how much.
Two hours later, I returned to our townhouse.
Not because I missed it.
Because I needed evidence.
The place looked exactly the same.
The expensive furniture.
The artwork.
The perfect design.
The life everyone thought was flawless.
But now every room felt like a crime scene.
I walked upstairs.
To our bedroom.
The room from the photos.
The room where Brittany had smiled.
Where Michael had betrayed me.
I opened the closet.
My clothes were still there.
His suits were arranged perfectly.
Everything looked normal.
Too normal.
Then I noticed something.
A small scratch on the bottom drawer of his desk.
A drawer I had never opened.
I pulled it.
Locked.
Of course.
Michael always believed he was smarter than everyone.
I took the key from the emergency box downstairs.
The drawer opened.
Inside were documents.
Not love letters.
Not secrets about Brittany.
Something worse.
Company files.
Private reports.
Bank transfers.
And one envelope.
With my name on it.
CLAIRE.
My heart slowed.
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Not from Michael.
From his father.
Claire,
If you are reading this, then something has happened.
And if something has happened, it means I failed to stop it.
I stopped breathing.
The letter continued.
I spent years believing I understood my own family.
I was wrong.
There is someone inside Carter Global who has been manipulating everything.
My hands tightened around the paper.
Michael is not the person you should fear.
That sentence shocked me.
Because after what happened…
I wanted to hate him.
I wanted him to be the villain.
But the letter said otherwise.
He made mistakes. Terrible ones.
But he has been controlled by someone far more dangerous.
I kept reading.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And my blood went cold.
The person who destroyed my company is someone you know.
Someone you trust.
The letter ended there.
No name.
No explanation.
Just one sentence written underneath.
Almost like a warning.
“Don’t trust the woman who smiles when everyone else is crying.”
A sound came from behind me.
I froze.
The bedroom door.
Slowly opening.
“Claire?”
Michael.
I turned.
He stood there.
Looking exhausted.
Not like the powerful CEO everyone feared.
Like a man who had lost control of his own life.
“What are you doing here?”
He looked at the papers in my hand.
Then at the letter.
His face changed.
“Where did you get that?”
I held it up.
“Your father wrote this.”
Michael went pale.
“You found it.”
“You knew?”
He looked away.
That was enough.
I felt my chest tighten.
“You knew about this?”
“Not everything.”
“Then what did you know?”
He stepped closer.
“Claire, listen.”
“No.”
I stepped back.
“You don’t get to ask me to listen anymore.”
His face fell.
“I deserved that.”
“Yes.”
He nodded.
“I did.”
That answer surprised me.
Because Michael Carter never admitted fault.
Not in business.
Not in life.
But now he looked broken.
“I need to tell you the truth.”
I crossed my arms.
“Start talking.”
He took a breath.
“Brittany wasn’t supposed to become public.”
I stared.
“What?”
“She was a distraction.”
My eyes narrowed.
“From what?”
He looked at me.
“From someone getting into the company.”
I laughed bitterly.
“So you cheated on me to protect your company?”
“No.”
His voice sharpened.
“I thought I was protecting it.”
Silence.
Then he said:
“My father left behind a hidden account.”
I frowned.
“What account?”
“A backup fund.”
“Worth?”
He looked away.
“Almost three hundred million dollars.”
My eyes widened.
“And someone wants it.”
He nodded.
“Someone who knows only you can access it.”
My stomach turned.
“Why me?”
Michael hesitated.
Then:
“Because my father trusted you.”
That made no sense.
“I barely knew him.”
Michael shook his head.
“You did more than you realize.”
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
Ryan.
I picked up.
“Tell me.”
His voice was tense.
“I found something.”
“What?”
“The person behind the number.”
I waited.
“Claire…”
“What?”
“There’s a problem.”
“Say it.”
A pause.
“The number was cloned.”
I frowned.
“So?”
“So whoever is using it didn’t steal an identity.”
My heart slowed.
“They created a fake trail.”
“Yes.”
“To make us think it was his father.”
“Yes.”
I looked at Michael.
Then back at the phone.
“Then who is it?”
Ryan went silent.
Too long.
“Ryan.”
Finally he said:
“I traced the money.”
“And?”
“The payments to Brittany.”
I grabbed the edge of the desk.
“Who?”
His answer came quietly.
“The account belongs to…”
A pause.
“Your lawyer.”
I froze.
“My lawyer?”
The person who helped me build my career.
The person who handled my contracts.
The person I trusted with everything.
“No.”
Ryan continued:
“I’m sending you the files now.”
My phone buzzed.
A folder appeared.
I opened it.
And the first photo made my blood run cold.
My lawyer.
My closest advisor.
Sitting across from Brittany.
Smiling.
Talking.
Planning.
Then the second photo appeared.
A meeting.
A date.
Three weeks before the affair.
And the third photo…
Destroyed me.
Because it showed my lawyer handing Brittany a file.
A file labeled:
“Claire Carter — Personal Information.”
I looked at Michael.
For the first time, we were afraid of the same person.
“Who is she?”
He whispered.
I shook my head.
“I don’t know.”
Then my phone buzzed again.
A new message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
“Congratulations, Claire.”
“You found the first layer.”
Another message appeared.
“Now find out why your lawyer wanted you to destroy your own husband.”
I stared at the screen.
Because suddenly…
I understood.
The affair wasn’t the attack.
It was the distraction.
Someone wanted me angry.
Someone wanted me to destroy Michael.
Someone wanted me to do the work for them.
May you like
And I almost did.
Until I realized the person behind everything had been standing beside me the entire time.
