Chapter 6 - THE STOLEN PEACE

Everything seemed to be settling into a new rhythm until the letter arrived.

It was a legal document from her mother’s estate lawyer. Her mother was allegedly dying of some rare illness—a claim Maya had heard at least five times throughout her life whenever her mother wanted attention. But this time, it came with a demand: A deathbed reconciliation.

The letter detailed how Arthur had changed his will, disinheriting Maya entirely unless she "re-established the family bond."

It was a classic tactic. They were trying to lure her back in through greed or fear.

Maya looked at the letter. She had the money she’d saved from her new job. It wasn't as much as the estate, but it was hers. She had built it on her own terms.

She didn't respond to the lawyer. Instead, she took the letter and threw it into the fireplace.

But her parents weren't finished. Two days later, Ellie didn't come home from school.

Maya went to the school in a frenzy, her heart pounding in her ears. The principal was standing by the door, looking pale.

“Where is she?” Maya screamed.

“A man... he had legal papers. He said he was her grandfather. He said there was an emergency and he had authorization.”

Maya’s vision blurred. She didn't wait for the police. She drove straight to her parents’ house. She didn't care about the restraining order. She didn't care about the consequences.

She smashed the front door in with a rock.

She stormed into the living room. Her parents were sitting there, drinking tea, while Ellie was sitting in the corner, playing with a doll.

Arthur stood up, his face smug. “You’re trespassing, Maya. You’re going to jail.”

Maya grabbed Ellie, shielding her with her body. “You abducted her. You stole her from her school.”

“She’s my granddaughter,” her mother said, standing up. “We have a right to see her. You’re the one who’s been kidnapping her from our family.”

Maya pulled out her phone and hit dial. “Officer Grant? Yes. They have her. They abducted her from the school.”

Arthur’s face went white. He hadn't expected her to call the police. He thought she would try to "handle it as a family."

“You wouldn't,” he said.

“Try me,” Maya replied.

When the police arrived, they didn't come with sirens. They came with handcuffs.

As they led her parents away, Arthur looked back at Maya. The smirk was gone. He looked old, small, and utterly defeated.

“You’ve ruined everything,” he hissed.

“No,” Maya said, holding Ellie’s hand. “I’ve saved us.”
