PART 4

No one spoke.
The frozen image of Michael Carter filled the television screen.
For nearly fifteen years, Michael had been more than Daniel's business partner.
He had been family.
He stood beside Daniel as best man at our wedding anniversary celebration.
He carried Arthur's coffin during the funeral.
He had held my hands afterward and promised,
"Mrs. Whitmore, I'll always look after Daniel."
Now...
There he was.
Walking into Arthur's private study in the middle of the night beside Vanessa.
Daniel stared at the screen.
His face had gone completely pale.
"There has to be an explanation."
Thomas Reed, head of corporate security, said nothing.
Instead, he pressed Play.
The security footage continued.
Vanessa unlocked Arthur's safe.
She removed the original will.
Michael unfolded several documents from a leather portfolio.
Together they compared pages one by one.
Then Michael handed Vanessa another folder.
She smiled.
Twenty minutes later, she returned Arthur's will to the safe.
Except...
It was no longer the same document.
Thomas paused the video.
"Our forensic team examined the recording frame by frame."
He opened another file.
"The pages removed from Arthur's will were replaced with professionally forged copies."
Richard Lawson nodded gravely.
"The alterations were almost perfect."
"Almost."
Daniel rubbed both hands across his face.
"Why?"
He whispered.
"Michael already owned twenty percent of Whitmore International."
"He had everything."
Richard slowly shook his head.
"No."
"He wanted control."
He spread several financial reports across Arthur's desk.
"For the past three years..."
"Michael has quietly purchased voting rights through shell corporations."
Daniel frowned.
"I would've noticed."
"No."
Richard answered.
"Because the purchases weren't made in his name."
"They were made through Vanessa."
I looked toward my daughter-in-law.
She had not spoken for nearly ten minutes.
The confidence she always carried had disappeared.
Her perfectly styled hair had begun to fall loose around her face.
She looked...
Afraid.
Daniel turned to her.
"Tell me this isn't true."
She remained silent.
"Vanessa."
Nothing.
Finally...
She whispered,
"It wasn't supposed to happen like this."
Daniel stared.
"So it did happen."
Thomas connected another file to the television.
"This investigation actually began eight months ago."
Daniel looked surprised.
"You were investigating Michael?"
Thomas nodded.
"Arthur instructed us before he passed away."
The room fell silent.
I looked at Richard.
"You knew?"
Richard sighed heavily.
"Arthur never accused Michael of a crime."
"But he said something never felt right."
Thomas continued,
"After Mr. Whitmore's funeral, Michael began requesting unusual financial authority."
"He also encouraged Daniel to spend more time overseas."
Daniel slowly remembered.
"Every expansion project..."
Thomas nodded.
"Was Michael's idea."
"The London acquisition."
"The Singapore merger."
"The Dubai negotiations."
"Every trip kept you away from home."
Long enough...
For Vanessa to isolate me.
Daniel looked as though someone had stolen the air from the room.
"I left because I thought I was protecting the company."
Thomas answered quietly,
"Someone wanted you protecting the company."
"So you wouldn't protect your mother."
Just then...
Detective Laura Bennett entered the study carrying a sealed evidence box.
"Mr. Whitmore."
Thomas nodded respectfully.
"What did you find?"
The detective opened the box.
Inside were three mobile phones.
A laptop.
Several USB drives.
And one thick notebook.
"We executed a search warrant at Michael Carter's office two hours ago."
Daniel frowned.
"So quickly?"
"We already had probable cause involving financial fraud."
She handed Richard the notebook.
"Our digital investigators recovered deleted entries."
Richard flipped through the pages.
His expression darkened with every paragraph.
"What is it?" I asked.
He looked toward Daniel.
"It's a journal."
"Michael's."
Daniel stared.
"A journal?"
Richard nodded.
"He documented almost everything."
He turned to one page.
Dated two years earlier.
He read aloud.
Vanessa says Eleanor is lonely.
Good.
Lonely people are easier to isolate.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Richard turned another page.
Began changing Daniel's travel schedule.
He still trusts me completely.
Another page.
Medication appears effective.
Vanessa says Eleanor now doubts her own memory.
I felt sick.
Richard continued.
Next objective:
Assisted living.
Once Eleanor leaves the estate...
Daniel inherits operational authority.
Vanessa controls Daniel.
I control Vanessa.
Silence.
Utter silence.
Daniel whispered,
"My God..."
He slowly looked at Vanessa.
"You knew?"
Tears rolled down her face.
"Not everything."
"What does that mean?"
She shook her head.
"I thought..."
"I thought we were only protecting the company."
"The company?"
"He said your mother was making poor financial decisions."
"He said Arthur planned to remove you from leadership."
Daniel stared at her.
"And you believed him?"
"He showed me documents."
Thomas quietly interrupted.
"They were forged."
Vanessa buried her face in her hands.
"I know that now."
The detective opened another evidence envelope.
"We also recovered emails."
She projected them onto the television.
Hundreds of messages.
Between Michael and Vanessa.
One subject line immediately caught Daniel's attention.
Phase Three.
He frowned.
"What is Phase Three?"
The detective opened the email.
Daniel read silently.
Then his entire body stiffened.
His voice was barely audible.
"He wanted..."
He looked toward me.
"...to have Mom declared legally incompetent."
Richard nodded.
"The forged medical records."
"The altered prescriptions."
"The isolation."
"The missing journal."
"It was all evidence for a future guardianship hearing."
I felt cold all over.
They hadn't merely wanted me out of the house.
They wanted the law to declare I no longer had the right to make decisions for myself.
Daniel slowly walked toward me.
He knelt in front of my chair.
Exactly where he had knelt as a little boy after breaking one of Arthur's favorite watches.
His eyes overflowed.
"I'm sorry."
I reached out and touched his face.
He leaned into my hand.
"I should have come home sooner."
"You came home."
"I should have listened."
"You're listening now."
"I should have protected you."
I smiled sadly.
"You still can."
Just then...
Thomas's phone vibrated.
He answered immediately.
After only a few seconds, his expression changed.
"What happened?" Richard asked.
Thomas lowered the phone.
"Michael Carter has been arrested."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"It's over."
Thomas slowly shook his head.
"No."
"It isn't."
"What do you mean?"
"The detectives searched a storage unit Michael rented under another name."
"And?"
Thomas looked directly at Daniel.
"They found a second will."
The room fell silent.
Richard frowned.
"A second will?"
Thomas nodded.
"Not Arthur's."
He paused.
"Yours."
Daniel stared in confusion.
"I've never written a will."
Thomas swallowed.
"According to the document..."
He opened the evidence folder.
"...you died six months from now in a private aircraft accident."
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Thomas continued quietly.
"The forged will leaves controlling interest in Whitmore International..."
He looked first at Vanessa.
Then at the detectives.
"...to Michael Carter."
The room became deathly still.
This had never been just elder abuse.
May you like
It had never been just financial fraud.
Someone had been planning for Daniel to disappear, too.
