Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Curtain

For three days, I stayed beside Sophie’s hospital bed.
Three days of watching the monitors.
Three days of counting her breaths.
Three days of realizing something that should have been obvious from the beginning.
A child does not need a perfect family.
A child needs safety.
And somehow…
The people who shared my blood had become the greatest threat to mine.
Sophie was asleep when Detective Morgan entered the room.
She looked exhausted.
The kind of exhaustion that came from chasing a truth nobody wanted found.
“You need to see something.”
I stood carefully.
“What?”
She placed her tablet on the table.
A security image.
A woman entering the Whitmore Hotel the night of the wedding.
I already knew.
Victoria.
My aunt.
The woman my family erased.
The woman who had been manipulating Preston.
But then Detective Morgan zoomed in.
My stomach dropped.
“That’s impossible.”
“What?”
I pointed.
“She wasn’t alone.”
Behind Victoria was someone else.
A man.
Wearing a hotel staff uniform.
At first, he looked like any employee.
But Detective Morgan enlarged the image.
And I recognized him.
My father’s former assistant.
Daniel Cross.
My breath caught.
“He died.”
Detective Morgan looked at me.
“No.”
A pause.
“Your family said he did.”
The sentence hit me.
Another lie.
Another buried truth.
How many pieces of my life had been rewritten without my permission?
“Who is Daniel Cross?”
The detective sat down.
“That’s what we’re trying to figure out.”
She opened another file.
“Officially, he was your grandfather’s most trusted employee.”
I nodded.
“I remember him.”
Barely.
A tall man.
Quiet.
Always carrying a leather folder.
Always speaking respectfully to my grandfather.
“He disappeared after your grandfather died.”
The detective continued.
“But before he disappeared, he sent one message.”
She turned the screen toward me.
One sentence.
Victoria knows the truth about the accident.
The accident.
My father’s accident.
The one everyone told me was a tragedy.
A drunk driver.
Bad weather.
Bad timing.
A horrible coincidence.
That was what I had believed.
But now…
I wasn’t sure anymore.
“Why would Victoria care about my father’s accident?”
Detective Morgan looked uncomfortable.
“Because your father wasn’t just her brother.”
I frowned.
“What?”
“He was her obstacle.”
The room went quiet.
“Your grandfather planned to remove Victoria from the company.”
I stared.
“Why?”
The detective opened another document.
A psychiatric evaluation.
Victoria Whitmore.
The words were brutal.
Obsessive behavior.
Paranoia.
Control issues.
Violent impulses.
My fingers went cold.
“She was dangerous.”
Detective Morgan nodded.
“Yes.”
A pause.
“And your grandfather knew.”
I looked at Sophie.
Still sleeping.
Still innocent.
Still too young to understand that adults could smile while planning terrible things.
And suddenly…
I understood why my grandfather had chosen me.
Not because I was stronger.
Not because I was smarter.
Because I was the only person in the family who had never wanted power.
That evening, my mother came.
Alone.
No father.
No excuses.
Just her.
She stood in the doorway.
“Can I come in?”
I nodded.
Barely.
She looked at Sophie.
Her eyes filled.
“She looks so small.”
I didn’t answer.
Because she was.
And someone had hurt her.
My mother sat down.
“I need to tell you something.”
I looked at her.
“Another secret?”
She flinched.
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised me.
“I deserve that.”
She took a deep breath.
“Victoria contacted us years ago.”
My entire body went still.
“What?”
“After your grandfather died.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your father told me not to.”
I laughed softly.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
The answer confused me.
My father was always the one protecting me.
The one person who never made me feel invisible.
“He was afraid.”
My mother continued.
“He knew Victoria was watching the family.”
I sat down.
“Then why didn’t anyone stop her?”
My mother looked away.
“Because your father thought he could handle it.”
A pause.
“He was wrong.”
The words hurt.
Because my father had always seemed invincible.
Now I was realizing…
He was just human.
My mother’s voice became quieter.
“Two weeks before he died, your father found something.”
“What?”
“A hidden account.”
My heart raced.
“Whose?”
She looked at me.
“Victoria’s.”
I waited.
“She had been moving money.”
“How much?”
My mother swallowed.
“Millions.”
The pieces connected.
Victoria wasn’t just angry.
She wasn’t just jealous.
She was building something.
A secret empire.
And Preston…
Had been her weapon.
The next morning, the police found Daniel Cross.
Alive.
Hidden under another name.
Living in a small town outside Illinois.
When they brought him in, I expected an old villain.
Instead…
I saw a broken man.
Older.
Tired.
Scared.
He looked at me and immediately apologized.
“I’m sorry.”
I didn’t respond.
Because everyone said that eventually.
Sorry.
Always after the damage.
Detective Morgan questioned him.
“Tell us about Victoria.”
Daniel looked down.
“She was never interested in money.”
Everyone looked confused.
“Then what?”
He whispered:
“Revenge.”
The room went silent.
“Revenge for what?”
Daniel looked at me.
“Your grandfather chose your father.”
A pause.
“Then your father chose you.”
My throat tightened.
“She believed you stole her life.”
I shook my head.
“She did this because of jealousy?”
Daniel looked at me.
“No.”
His voice lowered.
“Because she believed your grandfather murdered her future.”
I frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then opened an old envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Written by my grandfather.
Never sent.
The first line:
Victoria, I know what you did.
My blood ran cold.
Daniel continued reading.
You think I don’t know about the money.
You think I don’t know about Thomas’s accident.
I grabbed the letter.
“Wait.”
My hands shook.
“My father’s accident?”
Daniel nodded.
“Victoria caused it.”
The room stopped.
“What?”
“She arranged it.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“No.”
Daniel looked devastated.
“Your father survived.”
A pause.
“For six hours.”
My breathing stopped.
“He was alive?”
Daniel nodded.
“Long enough to tell me one thing.”
I could barely speak.
“What?”
Daniel looked at me.
“He told me to protect you.”
I closed my eyes.
The pain was unbearable.
My father.
Alive.
Knowing he might die.
And his final thought was me.
Not money.
Not revenge.
Me.
Then Detective Morgan’s phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Her face changed.
“What happened?”
She looked at us.
“Victoria was found.”
Everyone froze.
“Where?”
The detective slowly lowered the phone.
“At the hospital.”
My blood ran cold.
“Which hospital?”
She looked at Sophie.
At my daughter.
Then back at me.
“This one.”
The room became silent.
Because the person who destroyed my family…
The person who manipulated Preston…
The person who had been hiding for years…
Was now only a few floors away.
And she wasn’t running.
May you like
She came here.
For my daughter.
