Chapter 5 - The Golden Cage

Hearing the words out loud destroyed whatever tiny lingering doubts I had left. A wave of profound joy, fierce anger, and overwhelming grief washed over me all at once.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I demanded, fighting to keep my voice low. "Why did you run away? You let me believe I was just a one-night memory to you! I would have searched the entire world for you if I knew!"

"You don't understand who my family is!" Camila cried softly, stepping closer and grasping my jacket sleeve, her touch igniting a spark of familiarity that eight years hadn't extinguished. "That night eight years ago... I wasn't just out having fun. I was running away. My father had arranged a marriage for me to merge his firm with a conglomerate in New York. I felt like my life was over."

She wiped a tear from her cheek, her chest heaving. "Meeting you that night was the only real thing I had ever experienced. But when I woke up the next morning at the diner and realized what we had done, I panicked. I knew if my father found out about you, he would destroy you. He has the money and the connections to erase people, Ethan. I thought I was protecting you by leaving."

"And the girls?" I asked, my voice cracking.

"I found out I was pregnant two weeks later," she said softly. "I hid the pregnancy for as long as I could, but when my father found out, he was furious. He canceled the marriage arrangement to cover up the scandal, brought me back to this estate, and put me under constant guard. He threatened to take the children away from me entirely and put them up for adoption unless I stayed here, under his control, playing the dutiful daughter."

She looked at me with profound sorrow. "I named them in secret, Ethan. I raised them inside this golden cage, telling them stories about a brave artist who drew a compass so they would know they came from love, not from a corporate contract."

"They know about the compass," I said, my heart aching.

"I showed them my wrist when they were old enough to ask about it," she admitted, smiling weakly through her tears. "I told them it meant that no matter how lost we are, love always finds a way back."

Before I could reach out to wrap my arms around her, a heavy, cold voice boomed from the top of the terrace steps.

"Camila. Who is this trespasser?"
