Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Panic erupted in waves across the ballroom.

A prominent local judge in the third row stood up so fast his chair clattered backward onto the floor. Several corporate executives began whispering frantically among themselves, their faces pale with the sudden realization that they had hitched their wagons to a pair of federal criminals.

Victoria bolted from her seat, her high heels clicking frantically against the floor as she tried to sprint toward the rear exit.

She didn't make it six feet.

Two burly men in plainclothes—men who hadn't been standing by the door a moment ago—stepped directly into her path. They flashed federal badges under the glaring lights of the chandeliers.

"Victoria Vance, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, conspiracy, and attempted murder," announced the lead federal agent, his voice cutting cleanly through the rising murmur of the crowd. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

At the same moment, three more agents mounted the stage, moving directly toward Marcus.

Marcus didn't run. He slumped against the wooden banister of the stage steps, his knees seeming to give out entirely. The handcuffs clicked onto his wrists with a sharp, metallic bite that echoed through the silent hall. As they hauled him past the rows of stunned guests—many of whom had donated thousands of dollars to his recent political campaigns—he kept his head down, staring miserably at the floor.

I stood in the center of the stage, the microphone still clutched in my hand.

The room was watching me now. Every single person who had turned their back on me three years ago, every former friend who had crossed the street to avoid meeting my eye, every corrupt official who had nodded along with Marcus’s fabricated prosecution—they were all staring at me in absolute, stunned silence.

I didn't yell. I didn't gloat.

"Ladies and gentlemen," I said quietly into the microphone, my voice steady and resonant. "Enjoy the rest of your evening. The board of Vance Industries has just been restructured. Effective immediately."

I turned away from the podium, leaving the microphone humming softly in the empty air, and walked down the back service stairs of the country club.

The night air outside was brisk and clean.

I climbed back into the pickup truck, exhaling a breath I felt like I had been holding for three agonizing years. My hands were finally steady. The knot of grief and rage in my chest had unspooled, replaced by a cold, quiet peace.

I pulled out the satellite phone and dialed the encrypted number my father had left in the cabin logbook.

It rang twice before a familiar, tired voice answered on the other end.

"Talk to me," my father said.

A tear finally broke free, tracking down my cheek in the darkness of the cab.

"It's over, Dad," I whispered, my voice breaking slightly. "Marcus and Victoria are in federal custody. The assets are frozen. The house is ours."

May you like

There was a long pause on the other end of the line, filled only with the static hiss of a secure satellite link. When my father spoke again, his voice was thick with emotion.

"I'm coming home, son," he said softly. "I'll see you in the morning."
