Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

The morning sun had barely cleared the horizon when the first police cruiser turned onto Magnolia Lane, its overhead lights flashing a silent, pulsing red and blue against the manicured brick facades of the neighborhood.
Julian and I were sitting downstairs in the formal dining room. Julian had brewed a pot of fresh coffee, and I held a warm ceramic mug between my hands, watching the street through the sheer lace curtains.
A second vehicle arrived—a sleek, unmarked black SUV bearing federal plates. Four men in dark suits stepped out, their expressions grim and purposeful.
Upstairs, a door opened. Garrick appeared at the top of the grand staircase, wearing a gray cotton running tracksuit and a towel slung around his neck. He looked down into the foyer, frowning as he noticed the flashing lights reflecting off the crystal chandelier.
"What the hell is going on out there?" Garrick muttered, descending the stairs two at a time.
He pushed open the front door without knocking, expecting to see a neighbor complaining about a parked car. Instead, Special Agent Vance of the FBI’s white-collar crime division stood on the porch, flanked by two Plano police officers.
"Garrick Conti?" the agent asked, holding out a laminated credential in one hand and a thick sheaf of legal documents in the other.
"Yes? I'm Garrick Conti. Who are you—"
"Garrick Conti, you are being placed under federal arrest pursuant to a warrant issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas, charging you with wire fraud, interstate transportation of stolen funds, and tax evasion."
The color drained from Garrick’s face so fast he looked like a statue carved from chalk. He stumbled backward, his hands flying up defensively. "This is a mistake. There’s some kind of clerical error—I’m a senior executive at Moretti & Vance, I’m a pillar of this community—"
"You're a thief, Mr. Conti," the agent interrupted coldly, stepping past him into the foyer. "And your mother’s coming with us, too."
Miriam appeared at the top of the stairs wrapped in her silk bathrobe, her hair undone and wild around her face, screaming insults at the officers. "How dare you! Do you know who we are? We are members in good standing of Plano First Community Church! We are righteous people!"
"Righteous people don't embezzle four million dollars through offshore shell companies, Mrs. Conti," the lead agent said smoothly as two female officers cuffed her wrists behind her back.
Garrick turned around, his eyes wild with panic, searching the hallway for someone to blame. That was when he saw me sitting quietly in the dining room, sipping my coffee in the morning light.
His jaw dropped. He stared at me as if I were a ghost.
"Elena..." he breathed, his voice cracking with sudden, pathetic desperation. "Elena, tell them. Tell them this is a lie. Tell them my wife loves me, tell them we’re a family—"
I stood up slowly from the dining chair, walking out into the foyer until I stood directly in front of him. The federal agents watched in silence, recognizing the domestic dynamic instantly.

I looked into Garrick’s panicked, bloodshot eyes—the same eyes that had watched me scrub the lawn yesterday afternoon while I bled beneath my clothes.
"My name is Elena," I said, my voice steady, clear, and carrying across the entire foyer. "And I am not your wife anymore."
