Chapter 3 - THE NEST OF VIPERS

The library fell completely silent. The fire gave a low snap, throwing bright orange sparks against the mesh screen.

I looked up at Ethan, my brain scrambling to process the implications of what he had just said.

"Haynes International?" I repeated, my voice barely a whisper. "Victoria's father?"

"Arthur Haynes," Ethan said, walking over to his desk and picking up a heavy crystal decanter. He didn't pour a drink; he simply leaned his hands against the dark mahogany surface, staring down at a leather-bound folder containing the pending merger documents. "Arthur was my father's senior partner for thirty years. When my father was poisoned, Arthur was the one who pushed the police to close the investigation quickly, claiming it was an industrial espionage hit from an overseas rival."

He turned back to me, his eyes dark with a sudden, terrible realization.

"They didn't send you here by accident, Rosa," Ethan said. "Arthur Haynes didn't hire you through a subsidiary because they needed an extra housemaid. They knew exactly who you were."

My chest tightened until I couldn't draw a full breath. I looked over at Lily, who was now lining up the tiny brass weights in a neat row across the rug.

"If they knew who I was..." I stammered, "why didn't they do something to us? Why let me work here for three months?"

"Because of the trust," Ethan explained, walking back to sit beside me on the sofa. He reached out and wrapped his arm around my shoulder, pulling me against his side with a protective strength that made me feel, for the first time in four years, entirely safe. "My father's will contained a specific, ironclad clause. If I died without a legitimate heir, sixty percent of the Caldwell group's controlling shares would automatically pass to Haynes International to prevent a hostile takeover by outside funds."

I stared at him as the horrifying mosaic fell into place.

"And if you had an heir..." I breathed.

"If I had a child," Ethan finished, his voice icy, "the shares are locked in an untouchable family trust until the child reaches twenty-one. Arthur Haynes couldn't take over the company as long as a Caldwell child existed. But he couldn't kill you or Lily right away without raising immediate federal red flags—especially after my father's death."

"So they brought me here," I said, the terror washing over me in cold waves. "They wanted me in your house... so Victoria could find a way to discredit us. Or..."

"Or to set up a situation where you and Lily were eliminated in a controlled environment," Ethan said, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin. "Victoria pushing Lily today... that wasn't just classist cruelty, Rosa. She was trying to provoke a reaction. She wanted to see if I recognized you. She wanted to know if the secret was active."

Before I could answer, the double doors of the library clicked open.

Mrs. Gable stepped inside, her face pale, holding an encrypted sat-phone that belonged to the estate's private security detail.

"Mr. Caldwell," she said quietly, her usual rigid demeanor shaken. "Marcus is on line one. He's at the main entrance gates."

Ethan stood up immediately. "What is it, Mrs. Gable?"

"Arthur Haynes has just arrived at the outer security checkpoint, sir," Mrs. Gable reported. "He has three black SUVs with him. He claims he is here to collect his daughter's personal effects, but Marcus says the men in the trailing vehicles are armed private contractors from the Vanguard Group."

Ethan's face turned to absolute stone.

"Tell Marcus to lock the inner iron gates," Ethan ordered without a second's hesitation. "Deploy the second-tier security team to the perimeter fence. No one enters this property without my personal clearance."

"Understood, sir," Mrs. Gable said, turning to leave.

"Wait," Ethan called out.

Mrs. Gable stopped.

Ethan turned to look at her, his expression unreadable. "Mrs. Gable... you've managed this household for twenty years. Did you know who Rosa was when she was assigned to the domestic team?"

Mrs. Gable stood silent for two long seconds. Slowly, she smoothed the front of her grey apron.

"Your father was a good man, Ethan," the old woman said softly, her voice carrying a deep, quiet loyalty that sent a shiver through the room. "He knew Arthur Haynes was corrupt for three years before he died. Before your father passed, he gave me a sealed envelope with a photograph inside. A photograph of a young woman with dark hair who used to work in the Columbia lab with you."

I gasped, my hand going to my mouth.

"Jonathan knew?" I whispered.

"Mr. Caldwell senior knew you were pregnant, Rosa," Mrs. Gable said, looking at me with gentle, faded eyes. "He was the one who quietly transferred fifty thousand dollars into the account of Sterling Domestic three years ago, with instructions that if you ever applied for domestic placement, you were to be brought directly to this house where the security detail could keep an eye on you."

Tears blurred my vision as I looked at the fire. Jonathan Caldwell—the formidable, terrifying billionaire I had only ever seen in newspaper clippings—had been protecting my daughter from beyond the grave.

"Why didn't you tell me, Mrs. Gable?" Ethan asked, his voice thick with emotion.

"Because your father's instructions were absolute, sir," Mrs. Gable replied. "He said that if you were ever to find out about Rosa and the child, it had to happen naturally—when you were strong enough to protect them from the Haynes family. Until today, you were surrounded by Arthur's spies. Today... you threw Victoria out."

May you like

She looked toward the high window as the distant sound of vehicle horns echoed through the heavy rain outside.

"Now, Ethan," Mrs. Gable said quietly, "you have to finish what your father started."
