Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Glass showered across the polished concrete floor of the security room as Damian hit the deck, rolling smoothly to his feet with his weapon extended.
“Move and you die!” Damian’s voice cracked through the room like a thunderbolt.
Nico froze, his hand hovering two inches over a open briefcase on the desk. Enzo spun around, his hand reaching for a pistol tucked into his waistband, but stopped the instant he saw the laser sight of Damian’s Sig Sauer painted directly between his eyes.
Two guards near the door reached for their weapons; Damian fired twice without looking away from his brother. The double-tap echoed deafeningly in the enclosed room, and both guards dropped to the floor, disarmed and screaming.
“Damian...” Enzo breathed, his voice thick, raspy, and unnervingly familiar. A slow, dark smile crept across his scarred face. “Look at you. Still playing the grand lord of the manor.”
“Twelve years, Enzo,” Damian said, his arm as steady as forged iron. “Twelve years I carried the weight of your death. I fought a war for you. I killed men for you.”
“You fought a war for yourself!” Enzo spat, his smile vanishing into bitter rage. “You wanted the family! You wanted the money, the suits, the respectable legal empire! You left me in the mud in Chicago!”
“I built an empire so none of us would ever have to bleed in the mud again!” Damian shouted. “And you came back into my home, lived like a rat in my basement, and dragged my people into your filth!”
Nico slowly raised his hands, taking a small step back toward the main console. “Damian, listen to reason. We can work this out. There’s thirty million in bearer bonds in that briefcase. We leave tonight, you keep the house, you keep your corporate empire. Nobody else has to die.”
“You put a six-year-old child in the crawlspaces of my home, Nico,” Damian said, his eyes sliding to his cousin. “You locked me in a subterranean hole to suffocate. You don't get to negotiate.”
Marisol groaned softly from the corner chair, her eyes opening through swollen lids. “Damian... the server... he... he sent the orders...”
“Shut up!” Enzo barked, lunging toward Marisol with his hand raised to strike her.
BANG.
Damian’s shot tore through the shoulder of Enzo’s tactical jacket, knocking him backward against the wall. Enzo dropped to his knees, clutching his bleeding arm, gasping in shock.
Nico saw his split-second opportunity and lunged for the master control switch on the wall to drop the steel security shutters.
Damian didn't hesitate. He shifted his grip and fired three rapid rounds into the console. The control board erupted in a shower of blue sparks and white smoke. The magnetic locks across the entire estate failed simultaneously, throwing every door on the property wide open with a massive pneumatic hiss.
Footsteps roared up the outer stairwell.
The doors to the security suite burst open, and Rafael swept into the room, flanked by six heavily armed tactical guards loyal only to Damian. Within seconds, Nico was slammed face-down onto the concrete floor, his arms pinned behind his back, steel cuffs clicking tightly around his wrists.
Enzo remained on his knees, holding his bleeding shoulder, glaring up at his brother with pure, unadulterated venom.
“What are you going to do now, big brother?” Enzo sneered, spitting blood onto the floor. “Put me in the ground for real this time? You don't have it in you. You’re too clean.”
Damian walked over to Marisol, pulled a tactical knife from his belt, and sliced through her plastic restraints with a single smooth motion. He helped her stand, supporting her weight as she leaned weakly against him.
“Is Camila safe?” Marisol whispered, her voice trembling. “Please... tell me she’s—”
“She’s safe,” Damian said gently. “Dr. Hale has her at the river launch. She’s waiting for you.”
Marisol burst into quiet, trembling tears of relief, clutching Damian’s arm before Rafael escorted her down the stairs toward the waiting medical sedan.
Damian turned back to look at his brother and cousin. The grand room was quiet now, save for the hum of the ruined console and the soft patter of rain against the broken window.
“Take them to the federal marshals in Chicago,” Damian told Rafael. “Every recording on that flash drive, every ledger, every piece of evidence regarding Enzo’s underground network goes directly to the Special Prosecutions Task Force. Let the world know exactly what they are.”
“Damian, no!” Nico shrieked, struggling against the guards as he was dragged toward the door. “Not the feds! Damian! We’re family!”
Enzo didn't scream. He simply stared at Damian as he was pulled away, his eyes cold and empty, realizing that the brother he had tried to destroy had finally excised the cancer from his house.
An hour later, the rain had stopped.
Damian stood on the grand rear terrace of Oakridge Manor, watching the first pale light of dawn break over the eastern horizon, painting the clouds in shades of gold and deep violet.
Down in the garden below, Owen Hale was sitting on a stone bench beside Marisol, who was wrapped in a thick wool blanket. Sitting between them was Camila, holding a warm cup of cocoa in both small hands, her bare feet tucked safely beneath her mother’s coat.
Damian reached into his pocket, pulled out his cousin’s garnet signet ring—which Rafael had recovered from the security office—and dropped it over the terrace balustrade into the deep, dark waters of the river below.

He watched it sink into the black depth until it vanished completely.
Then he turned around, walked down the stone steps into the warm morning light, and joined the only real family he had left.
