Chapter 3 - THE PRESS CONFERENCE

By 10:00 a.m. the following morning, the lobby of the Hartwell Corporate Headquarters was swarming with local news crews, financial journalists, and camera operators.
The story had spread through the city’s business circles like a wildfire: Managing Director of Hartwell Dining Group Terminated amid Multi-Million Dollar Fraud Investigation.
Evan, desperate to regain control of the narrative before the police could act, had scheduled his own impromptu press gathering on the front steps of the building, accompanied by a bargain-bin defense attorney he had managed to retain overnight.
I stood behind the tinted glass windows of the second-floor mezzanine, watching through the glass as Evan stood before a bank of microphones.
He looked unwashed, his designer suit wrinkled from sleeping in a hotel lobby armchair, but he was attempting to put on his best, practiced corporate smile. Gloria stood beside him, clutching a knock-off designer handbag, her eyes darting nervously around the crowd.
"Thank you all for coming," Evan announced, his voice booming over the portable amplifier system. "I want to address the vicious, false rumors being spread by my mother-in-law, Margaret Hartwell. What we are seeing here is a tragic case of a bitter, controlling matriarch trying to destroy my marriage and usurp control of a thriving business that I built with my own hands!"
A reporter held up a microphone. "Mr. Miller, is it true that your corporate credentials were revoked and you were evicted from your residence last night?"
"It was an illegal, unauthorized lock-out!" Evan lied smoothly, pounding his fist against the podium. "My wife, Emily, is being held against her will by her mother! Margaret Hartwell has orchestrated a hostile, illegal takeover of my personal assets because I refused to let her meddle in my family’s private life! I have done nothing wrong! Every dollar spent under my management went directly toward expanding the Hartwell brand!"
From behind the heavy oak double doors of the headquarters, Emily stepped out.
She wasn't wearing the baggy, stained sweater from the night before. She was dressed in a sharp, tailored ivory power suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, professional bun, her face radiant, composed, and fierce.
The camera flashes went off in a deafening, blinding storm.
Evan froze mid-sentence, his jaw dropping as he watched his wife step up to a second podium set up right beside his.
"Emily!" Evan stammered, trying to quickly shift his tone back to sweet manipulation. "Honey... sweetie, thank God you're here! Tell these people! Tell them how your mother forced you—"
Emily didn't even glance at him. She adjusted the microphone in front of her, leaning in close.
"My name is Emily Hartwell," she said, her voice ringing out clear, steady, and loud across the plaza. "I am the sole beneficiary of the Hartwell Family Trust, and today I am announcing the immediate filing of a civil lawsuit against Evan Miller for three point two million dollars in embezzled corporate funds."
The crowd of reporters gasped, pens flying across notebooks, cameras zooming in on Evan's pale, horrified face.
"Furthermore," Emily continued smoothly, pulling a crisp, official legal document from her portfolio, "I have officially submitted evidence of systematic domestic abuse, physical assault, and financial isolation to the County District Attorney's office."
"She's lying!" Gloria shrieked from the side, pushing toward the microphones. "She's unstable! She's mentally ill!"
"Two hours ago," Emily said, completely ignoring her mother-in-law's outburst, "the State Financial Crimes Division executed a search warrant on the Cayman Island accounts registered under Gloria Vance's name. Over two point eight million dollars in stolen assets have been frozen by federal marshals."
Evan looked like he had been struck by lightning. He turned to his attorney, grabbing the man's lapels in absolute terror. "Is that true?! Can they do that?!"
The attorney looked at his phone, read a text message, and slowly backed away from Evan, stepping right out of the camera frame without saying a word.
"And finally," Emily said, looking directly into Evan's panicked eyes for the very first time, "I have officially filed for divorce on the grounds of severe cruelty, fraud, and adultery. You brought Victoria Sterling to Miami on my father's money, Evan. But today, you pay the bill."
Two unmarked federal SUVs pulled up to the curb, their blue lights flashing quietly.
Four plainclothes state troopers stepped out, marching up the steps toward Evan and Gloria.
"Evan Miller? Gloria Vance?" the lead investigator asked, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are both under arrest for grand larceny, scheme to defraud, and corporate embezzlement."
As the cuffs clicked tightly over Evan's wrists, he looked at Emily, his face twisted in a mixture of rage, disbelief, and pathetic desperation.
"Emily, please!" he begged as the troopers began marching him down the steps. "Think of Lily! We can work this out! I love you!"
Emily stood at the top of the marble steps, flanked by her legal team, her head held high, watching him being loaded into the back of the police transport vehicle.

She didn't shed a single tear. She simply adjusted her microphone one last time.
"Dinner is over, Evan," she whispered softly.
