Chapter 2 - THE FORENSIC TRAIL

Night fell over Oakridge like a shroud of heavy black velvet. The temperature dropped, sending a cool breeze rustling through the pines outside the master bedroom window.
Beside Samuel, Abigail slept deeply, her breathing rhythmic and heavy, her body relaxed in the total confidence that her plan was succeeding flawlessly. The wine she had poured at dinner—a heavy Cabernet—had done its job.
At 01:00 AM, Samuel slid out from under the covers. He moved with total silence, slipping into dark combat trousers and a black long-sleeve shirt.
He didn't make a sound as he glided down the carpeted stairs into the dark study.
He pulled a small, high-speed flash drive from his military kit—a specialized piece of hardware equipped with forensically secure extraction software, a tool he had kept from his fraud investigation days.
He sat down at Abigail’s immaculate white oak desk, powered on her laptop, and inserted the drive.
Within thirty seconds, the software bypassed the local password, mounting the hard drive into a secure, read-only shadow environment that would leave zero digital footprint, logs, or timestamps behind.
"Let's see what you've been up to, Abigail," Samuel whispered to the dark screen.
He started with the home security system.
The house was equipped with eight high-definition Ring cameras covering the front porch, the backyard, the kitchen, and the main hallways. Samuel navigated to the local video storage cache.
Three months of video footage had been systematically deleted.
"Amateur," Samuel muttered under his breath.
While Abigail had deleted the video files from the local user interface, she hadn't cleared the cloud database's metadata access logs. Samuel pulled up the server sync history.
The logs revealed a horrifying pattern.
Every single afternoon at 02:15 PM—precisely fifteen minutes after the postal worker delivered the mail—the hallway camera feed was disabled for exactly forty-five minutes. During those dark windows, the door access logs recorded the master bedroom key being used, followed by heavy motion alerts from the upstairs hallway.
On four specific dates—March 12th, April 4th, May 19th, and June 22nd—the garage camera recorded an unmarked grey van arriving at the house. Two men wearing navy blue scrubs stepped out, carried heavy leather restraint straps into the house, and emerged thirty minutes later escorting a heavily sedated Eleanor.
Samuel took high-resolution screenshots of every log, metadata entry, and server timestamp, exporting them directly to his encrypted drive.
Next, he targeted the financial records.
He opened the browser’s hidden local cache and pulled up the saved banking sessions.
What he found made his blood run cold.
Over the past six months, while he was deployed overseas in a combat zone, Abigail had systematically drained Eleanor’s local liquid checking account. Small, calculated transfers—$4,900 here, $9,500 there—deliberately kept below the $10,000 federal banking reporting threshold to avoid triggering automatic anti-money laundering alerts.
A total of $142,000 had been transferred out of Eleanor’s account into a newly created shell entity registered in Nevada under the name Vance Capital Holdings LLC.
The sole managing member of Vance Capital Holdings was Abigail Vance.
And then Samuel found the crown jewel of her fraud.
Sitting in the draft folder of her primary email account was an outgoing wire transfer application addressed to First National Bank, dated for tomorrow at 02:00 PM—four hours after the scheduled psychiatric evaluation at St. Jude’s Clinic.
The requested wire transfer amount: $2,100,000.
Destination: A private wealth management account at Banque Cantonale de Genève in Switzerland.
Attached to the draft email were three scanned documents:
A forged durable power-of-attorney document bearing Eleanor Vance’s signature, notarized by a local notary public named Marcus Vance—Abigail’s cousin.
A medical affidavit signed by Dr. Harrison certifying that Eleanor Vance suffered from severe, irreversible vascular dementia and lacked legal capacity.
A pre-signed property transfer deed handing full ownership of Eleanor’s historic four-hundred-acre equestrian estate in Aiken, South Carolina, to Vance Capital Holdings LLC.
Samuel stared at the illuminated screen, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge of the desk.
It was a total liquidation. A complete, methodical destruction of his mother's life, estate, and freedom. The moment that psychiatric evaluation was signed tomorrow morning, Eleanor would be legally declared an incompetent ward of the state, locked away in an offshore-funded private facility, and her millions would disappear into the Swiss banking system before sunset.
And Samuel? Once the money was gone, Abigail would file for divorce, citing his "post-deployment PTSD" and "emotional instability," walking away with millions while leaving him with a destroyed mother and a mountain of legal debt.
"Brilliant," Samuel whispered, a dark, terrifying smile curling the corners of his lips. "Absolutely brilliant, Abigail. But you broke the cardinal rule of financial fraud."
He looked at the bottom of the wire transfer document.
"You left a paper trail."
Samuel plugged a second, ultra-compact audio recording device—a military-grade voice-activated recorder with a 100-hour battery life—into his laptop. He configured the sensitivity settings, unplugged the drive, and walked silently into the kitchen.
He knelt beneath the heavy mahogany kitchen table, pulled out a small tube of industrial adhesive, and mounted the microscopic microphone directly against the underside of the central wooden support beam. It was completely invisible to the naked eye, positioned perfectly to capture every conversation held at the breakfast table, the kitchen island, and the back terrace.
Next, he walked out to the garage.
Abigail’s luxury BMW SUV sat in the center bay. Samuel slid under the rear bumper, attaching a magnetic cellular GPS tracking device with an integrated audio bug directly to the vehicle's frame rail.
With the physical and digital surveillance network established, Samuel returned to his study.
He opened his personal military laptop, logged into his secure military network, and composed an urgent, encrypted email to his commanding officer, Colonel Thomas Miller, as well as the Chief Inspector at the State Attorney General’s Financial Crimes Division—his former boss and mentor, Richard Vance (no relation).
SUBJECT: URGENT / EMERGENCY LEGAL & LEAVE INTERVENTION
CLASSIFICATION: RESTRICTED
Richard,
I have returned from deployment to discover an active, large-scale financial elder abuse and human trafficking operation targeting my mother, Eleanor Vance. The perpetrators include my wife, Abigail Vance, Dr. Harrison (St. Jude Memory Clinic), and notary Marcus Vance. Imminent wire fraud of $2.1M scheduled for tomorrow at 1400 EST.
I require an immediate emergency hold on all local asset transfers associated with Vance Capital Holdings LLC, an expedited search warrant for St. Jude Memory Clinic, and an undercover state investigator present at tomorrow's 0900 psychiatric evaluation.
I am operating a controlled counter-intelligence operation on-site. Evidence files attached.
Samuel Vance, Captain, US Army.
He attached the exported database logs, the forged power-of-attorney documents, the banking records, and the high-resolution photographs of the bruises on Eleanor’s wrists.
He hit SEND.
The green confirmation bar flashed across the screen: TRANSMISSION SUCCESSFUL.
Samuel shut down the laptop, returned the key to Abigail’s jewelry chest, slid back into bed beside his sleeping wife, and pulled the covers up to his chest.
At 03:30 AM, Abigail stirred, turning over and resting her arm across his chest, her breath warm against his neck.
"Samuel?" she muttered groggily. "Are you awake?"
"Just thinking about tomorrow," Samuel said softly, stroking her hair in the dark. "About getting Mom the help she needs."
May you like
"It's going to be okay, baby," Abigail mumbled, sinking back into sleep. "Tomorrow, all our problems are going to disappear."
"Yes," Samuel whispered into the pitch-black room. "They certainly are."
