Chapter 3 - The Cruelty Unmasked

The video continued to play, every second etching a deeper scar into my heart.

Lauren walked into Emma’s room and came out a minute later, telling the innocent three-year-old, "Go check under Grandma's pillow for my phone charger, sweetie."

Emma, trusting and eager to please, ran toward Margaret’s bedroom.

The moment Emma entered the room, Lauren closed the bedroom door slightly behind her. Two minutes later, Margaret walked in, screaming loudly enough for the microphone on the wall to pick up every word.

"My bracelet! Where is my bracelet?!" Margaret bellowed.

Emma ran out of the room, terrified, holding her stuffed rabbit, crying that she didn't take anything.

Lauren immediately grabbed Emma by the arm, squeezing so tightly that the child gasped in pain. "You took it! You put it in your backpack!"

"I didn't! I didn't!" Emma sobbed.

Margaret grabbed Emma’s backpack from her small playroom corner, unzipped it aggressively, and dumped the contents on the floor. With practiced theatricality, Lauren reached into her own jacket pocket, slid her hand near the fallen pile of crayons, and pulled out the velvet box.

"Look! Here it is! She hid it in her bag!" Lauren lied smoothly.

Emma was crying so hard she was hyperventilating. "No, Auntie! No!"

Then came the part that made me choke back a scream in the quiet hotel room.

Margaret grabbed Emma by her collar. "This child is evil. She’s corrupt, just like her mother. A thief in the making."

"What are you going to do, Mom?" Lauren asked, watching with cold indifference.

"In my day, thieves were marked so everyone knew what they were," Margaret declared, her voice devoid of humanity. "If her mother won't teach her shame, I will."

Margaret walked to the bathroom and returned with Daniel’s electric hair clippers.

Richard woke up from his nap on the armchair, squinting. "Margaret, what are you doing?"

"Shut up, Richard! She needs a lesson!"

Emma shrieked, kicking her little legs, calling for me, calling for her daddy. But Margaret held her down on the hardwood floor with her knee while Lauren helped pin the child's arms behind her back.

With ruthless, jagged motions, Margaret shoved the exposed blade of the clippers against my daughter’s scalp. She shaved off thick chunks of soft brown hair, pressing down hard whenever Emma tried to wiggle away, the metal teeth cutting into the tender skin behind her ears.

"There," Margaret breathed heavily when she was done, leaving my baby sobbing on the floor, covered in her own hair and blood. "Now let's see your precious mother defend you."

I slammed my laptop shut. Tears of pure rage blinded my vision. My chest heaved as I fought the urge to drive back to that apartment and tear those monsters apart with my bare hands.

No. Physical violence wouldn't heal Emma, nor would it ruin them completely.

They wanted a fight? They were going to get an absolute, merciless destruction.

I pulled out my phone and called my lawyer, Arthur Vance. He picked up on the third ring.

"Clara? It’s late. Is everything alright?"

"Arthur," I said, my voice steadying into something sharp and cold as steel. "I have video evidence of aggravated child abuse, grand larceny, insurance fraud conspiracy, and unlawful restraint committed against my daughter by my mother-in-law and sister-in-law. I need you to file for an emergency restraining order, initiate divorce proceedings, and contact the Police Chief immediately."

There was a brief pause on the line before Arthur replied, "Send me the files."
