Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

Two days later, I was discharged from the hospital under strict medical instructions to remain on reduced activity. Luke brought me home to his family's private residence on the outskirts of the city—a quiet, heavily secured estate where my mother or father could never reach us.

Meanwhile, the fallout from that fateful Sunday dinner was sweeping through our family like a wildfire.

My father, Richard, made repeated attempts to contact me, sending frantic text messages and leaving trembling voicemails. In his mind, he was still trying to mediate, playing the perpetual peacekeeper in a household ruled by a tyrant.

On Wednesday afternoon, while Luke was in a virtual meeting with our legal counsel, a butler announced that my father had arrived at the front gate, begging for five minutes to speak with me.

Victoria Vance looked at me from across the study, where she was reviewing legal briefs. "You do not have to see him, Natalie. I can have security escort him off the property immediately."

I took a deep breath, placing a hand over my stomach. "No, Grandmother. I need to face him. I need him to hear me clearly without Mom standing behind him."

Five minutes later, Richard was ushered into the grand library. He looked diminished, his posture stooped, the sharp lines of his suits replaced by rumpled garments and hollow, dark circles beneath his eyes. He looked like a man whose structural foundation had vanished overnight.

"Natalie..." Richard breathed out, stepping forward tentatively before halting under Victoria’s sharp, warning gaze. "Thank God you're okay. I... I brought some things from the house. Your old photo albums, some tea you like..."

"Save it, Dad," I said, my voice cool and even. "Why are you here?"

Richard wringing his hands nervously. "Your mother... she's in a terrible state at the county jail, Nat. Her bail hearing is tomorrow. The lawyer says if you and Luke don't agree to soften your statement, she could face up to fifteen years in state prison. She's fifty-six, Natalie! Prison would kill her!"

I listened to him, waiting for a single word of concern about me, about my abdominal injuries, or about the grandchild he had almost lost. But just as he had done for twenty-nine years, my father was only focused on appeasing Evelyn.

"She punched me, Dad," I said softly, staring directly into his eyes. "She locked me in place and struck my baby with all her strength. Where were you when she was screaming at me? Where were you when she raised her fist?"

Richard flinched, looking down at the carpet. "She... she was distraught, Natalie! You know how much she wanted Lauren to have the first grandchild! She wasn't in her right mind—"

"She was in her right mind when she embezzled three million dollars of Grandfather's money from me over seven years," I interrupted coldly.

Richard’s face went dead pale. His mouth opened and closed silently, like a fish out of water. "What... what are you talking about?"

"Don't pretend you didn't know," Victoria Vance interjected, her voice cutting through the room like a blade. "Our financial forensiologists have already traced several transfers from Natalie's trust directly into a joint account bearing your name, Richard. You used those funds to settle your firm's tax liabilities in 2021."

"I... I didn't know where the money came from! Evelyn handled all the accounts!" Richard pleaded, panic taking over his voice. "Natalie, please, you have to believe me! I never wanted any of this!"

"Your ignorance isn't innocence, Dad," I said, feeling a sudden, profound sense of clarity wash over me. "It's cowardice. You stood by and watched her emotionally abuse Lauren and me for decades because it was easier for you to let us take her blows than to stand up to her yourself. Well, I'm done taking her blows. And I'm done protecting you."

"Natalie, please! We're your parents!" Richard cried out, tears welling in his weak eyes.

"Parents protect their children," I replied firmly. "You let her attack mine. Leave this house, Dad. And do not come back."

As security escorted my father out of the gates, Lauren walked into the room. She had watched the interaction from the adjoining hallway. She walked over and sat beside me, wrapping her arm around my shoulders.

"You were so strong," Lauren murmured. "I don't think I ever had the courage to say those words to him."

"We spent our whole lives protecting them from the consequences of their own cruelty," I said, leaning my head on Lauren's shoulder. "It stops today."

Lauren pulled an envelope from her pocket and set it on the coffee table. "Eric and I filed the final paperwork today to cut all financial ties with Mom and Dad. And... we decided something else."

"What's that?" I asked.

May you like

Lauren offered a small, genuinely peaceful smile. "We're taking a break from fertility treatments. For four years, Mom made me feel like my body was a broken vessel, like my whole existence depended on producing a baby for her legacy. Eric and I are going to take time to heal, travel, and just focus on us. If we decide to adopt or try again later, it will be because we want it, not because Evelyn demanded it."

I squeezed Lauren's hand tightly. For the first time in our lives, my sister and I were no longer competitors in our mother's twisted game. We were sisters, united and finally free.
