PART 2: THE SECRET INSIDE THE RED BRIEFCASE

For five seconds, nobody moved.
Not Adrian.
Not Tiffany.
Not even my father.
The woman in the dark gray suit stood beside the table, one hand resting on the sealed red briefcase as if she knew exactly how much damage it could cause.
The rain continued pounding against the windows.
The guests remained frozen in their seats.
Everyone was waiting.
Waiting to see what could possibly be more shocking than a husband humiliating his pregnant wife in front of everyone she knew.
Adrian tried to laugh.
But it sounded forced.
“You’re making a mistake,” he said.
The woman looked at him calmly.
“No, Mr. Vance.”
She opened the first lock.
Click.
“I spent six months making sure there was no mistake.”
Adrian’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
Because I had spent years studying every expression on his face.
Every smile.
Every lie.
Every moment he pretended to care.
He was afraid.
And for the first time that night, I wasn’t the only one afraid.
“Who are you?” Tiffany demanded.
The woman ignored her.
Instead, she turned to me.
“Mrs. Vance.”
Her voice softened.
“I’m Elena Brooks. I represent the Vance family trust.”
I frowned.
“The family trust?”
My father stepped beside me.
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“You knew about this?”
His expression tightened.
“I knew something was wrong.”
He glanced at Adrian.
“I just didn’t know how deep it went.”
Adrian’s anger returned.
“You brought lawyers to my event?”
My father looked at him coldly.
“No.”
He pointed toward me.
“You brought criminals into my daughter’s life.”
The room went silent.
Criminals.
The word hung there.
Tiffany suddenly shifted.
Her confidence disappeared.
“What is she talking about?”
Elena opened the briefcase.
Inside were documents.
Photographs.
A small recording device.
And a folder marked:
VANCE HOLDINGS INTERNAL INVESTIGATION.
Adrian saw it.
And his face went pale.
“No.”
It was barely a whisper.
Elena removed the first document.
“Three years ago, Adrian Vance transferred ownership of several company assets into private accounts.”
She placed the paper on the table.
“Without board approval.”
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Adrian.
He didn't look at me.
He couldn't.
“That’s impossible,” Malcolm said from the sofa.
Finally, he put down his tablet.
For the first time all evening, he looked concerned.
Elena turned toward him.
“Mr. Vance, your son has been stealing from your company for years.”
The room erupted.
Guests whispered.
Phones came out.
People who had been silently watching my humiliation suddenly became interested.
Funny how people only cared when the powerful started falling.
Adrian stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
Elena opened the second folder.
“Would you like to explain the offshore accounts?”
Silence.
“Or the payments made to a private investigator?”
Another document.
“Or perhaps the money transferred to Ms. Tiffany Lane?”
Everyone turned.
Tiffany’s face drained of color.
“That’s not true.”
Elena looked at her.
“You received nearly two million dollars from Adrian over fourteen months.”
A murmur spread through the room.
Tiffany looked at Adrian.
“You told me it was from your investment account.”
Adrian snapped.
“Not now.”
That sentence destroyed whatever illusion remained.
Because Tiffany realized something.
She was not special.
She was not the chosen woman.
She was just another person Adrian had used.
I watched her expression collapse.
Then Elena reached for the final folder.
The one that made Adrian take a step backward.
“This is the reason we came tonight.”
She opened it.
Inside was a DNA test.
My heart stopped.
Adrian noticed where my eyes landed.
His entire body went rigid.
“No.”
My father looked confused.
“DNA?”
Elena placed the report on the table.
“Mr. Vance, you announced publicly that Ms. Lane is carrying your heir.”
She looked directly at Adrian.
“However, the test results show otherwise.”
The room went completely silent.
Tiffany stopped breathing.
Adrian stared at the paper.
Impossible.
That was written all over his face.
“You’re lying.”
Elena shook her head.
“The test was performed by an independent laboratory.”
She slid the document across the table.
“The child is not yours.”
A gasp moved through the room.
Someone dropped a glass.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
Adrian looked at Tiffany.
Slowly.
Dangerously.
“What did she just say?”
Tiffany stepped back.
“Adrian…”
“What did she just say?”
His voice became louder.
She started crying.
“I didn’t know.”
He laughed.
But there was no humor.
“No?”
He pointed at her stomach.
“You stood there and let me destroy my marriage.”
“I thought the baby was yours.”
“You thought?”
The room felt like it was shrinking.
Then Adrian looked at me.
And something strange happened.
The anger disappeared.
The arrogance disappeared.
For one second, he looked like the man I married.
Broken.
Confused.
Desperate.
“Lena…”
I stared at him.
I had spent months waiting for him to say my name like he still cared.
But now?
Now it meant nothing.
“What?” I whispered.
He looked at my stomach.
At our child.
The child he had just abandoned.
“I made a mistake.”
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“A mistake?”
My hands protected my baby.
“You didn’t make one mistake, Adrian.”
My voice grew stronger.
“You made hundreds.”
He opened his mouth.
But before he could speak—
The main doors opened again.
This time, police officers entered.
Not my father’s officers.
Federal agents.
Elena stepped aside.

“Adrian Vance, you are under investigation for fraud, financial crimes, and attempted asset theft.”
The room exploded.
And as they walked toward my husband…
I realized something.
May you like
The man who thought he had destroyed me tonight...
Had actually walked into his own trap.
