PART 1: THE PHONE BENEATH THE FLOORBOARDS

At 1:13 a.m., I opened the hidden compartment beneath my pantry floor.

The black phone was exactly where I had left it twenty years earlier.

Dust covered the casing.

The battery indicator still glowed.

For a long moment, I simply stared at it.

Most people spend their lives trying to escape their past.

I actually had.

And now I was voluntarily walking back into it.

Because someone had touched my daughter.

No.

Not touched.

Owned.

Threatened.

Broken.

And there are some things a mother cannot forgive.

Ever.

I picked up the phone.

The first number answered after one ring.

"Raven."

The voice was older.

Slower.

But instantly recognizable.

Nikolai Petrov.

The syndicate accountant who once controlled money flows through six countries.

The man whose life I saved during a betrayal in Prague.

He owed me everything.

"You still alive?" I asked.

A laugh.

"I was wondering if I'd die before hearing your voice again."

"I need information."

The laughter vanished.

"Whose funeral are we planning?"

"Conrad Vale."

Silence.

Then:

"Oh."

Just one word.

But it carried meaning.

Danger.

History.

Recognition.

Because even among criminals, Conrad Vale had a reputation.

Not for violence.

For hiding violence.

The worst kind.

"I'll call you back in an hour."

The line disconnected.

I dialed the second number.

Federal Prosecutor Allison Reed.

The woman who built her career using evidence I supplied during my immunity deal.

She answered immediately.

"Margaret?"

"I need a favor."

"After twenty years?"

"Yes."

The silence stretched.

Then she said:

"Tell me everything."

So I did.

Every lash mark.

Every threat.

Every detail.

When I finished, Allison sounded different.

Not like a prosecutor.

Like a woman trying very hard not to become angry.

"Photographs?"

"Taken."

"Witnesses?"

"A seamstress and a doctor."

She exhaled slowly.

"Good."

Then:

"Very good."

That frightened me more than if she'd sounded shocked.

Because prosecutors only sound satisfied when they think they've found something much bigger than the crime you described.

I made my third call just before dawn.

And when that man answered...

Everything changed.

Because fifteen years ago Conrad Vale had ordered him killed.

And somehow...

He survived.

"Raven."

His voice was gravel.

Scarred.

Dangerous.

"I heard you disappeared."

"I did."

"What do you want?"

I looked toward Elena's bedroom upstairs.

May you like

Then I answered.

"I want Conrad Vale afraid."
